Friends, NOTE: OUR TV STUDIO WAS IN DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN FOR OVER 10 YEARS AND WE FOLLOWED WHAT WAS HAPPENING THERE… ESPECIALLY SINCE I LOVE BROOKLYN FOR MY WHOLE LIFE… PAUL

With New York City moving toward Phase 2 of reopening, we will continue to keep you up to date with our emails on Thursdays as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to greatly impact our communities.

Please remember that a face mask must be worn when in public if social distancing is not possible. If you do not have access to a mask, watch and share our video on how to make one yourself.

As tomorrow is Friday, June 19th — “Juneteenth” — below are activities that not only encourage the celebration, exploration, and beauty of Black culture in Brooklyn, but continues the discussions on freedom, justice, and equality.

I ask that you be safe, be united, be peaceful, and continue to protect yourself from COVID-19 in all your activities.

It is not intended as a mechanism for providing medical advice or treatment and should not be relied upon as a method to obtain medical care or emergency service. Personal information will be stored securely and only accessible to City employees protecting public health. It will not be accessible by ICE or used for law enforcement or any other purpose.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s been an uptick in the number of people working from home and across the U.S. adopting pets from animal shelters, and many others are also signing up to be temporary pet foster parents. Recent statistics show pet adoptions are up 100% from last year.

Pets can be a great, healthy addition to a family. Reports show that 78% of pet owners say their pets have improved their quality of life during this current social distancing period. For example, new and long-time pet owners are spending more time outside exercising with their pets, which is a great activity for everybody.

Just as our pets are keeping us healthy it’s important to return the favor by protecting your pets as you take them to dog parks or hiking trails, or even just extended walks around the neighborhood.

•	Fleas: even though we don’t often see them, just one flea can lay over 500 eggs in the first 21 days once they invade your do and then make their way into your home.
•	Ticks: they are found in many of the places your dog likes to go, such as tall grass, trails and leaves and can transmit serious diseases.
•	Mosquitos: a single bite from an infective mosquito can transmit heartworm disease.
•	Contaminated Soil: hookworms and roundworms can live in a dog’s intestines and can be passed on to you.

CDC Expert Offers Advice
Cancer patients and survivors are among those at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 because their immune systems are often weakened by the cancer and its treatments. So, it’s important that people who were recently diagnosed for cancer, currently being treated, or treated in the past take steps to protect their health during this pandemic. This is especially important for cancer patients who are currently being treated with chemotherapy.
Tips for Cancer Patients & Survivors:
•	Watch out for fever. Take your temperature any time you feel warm, flushed, chilled, or not well. If you have a temperature of 100.4ºF (38ºC) or higher or notice any of the signs and symptoms of an infection, call your doctor BEFORE going to their office or hospital.
•	Know the signs and symptoms of infection. Infection during chemotherapy can lead to hospitalization or even death. Call your doctor right away if you notice any of the signs and symptoms of an infection, such as fever, chills, change in cough or new cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, redness, soreness, or swelling in any area, including surgical wounds and ports, diarrhea, or vomiting
•	Clean your hands and ask those around you to do the same. Many diseases are spread by not cleaning your hands, which is especially dangerous when you’re getting chemotherapy treatment. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place. If soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
•	Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and shared objects between use at least daily.
•	Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others to protect other people in case you are infected, and ask others to do the same.
•	Avoid other people as much as possible (social distancing). Avoid leaving home as much as possible. Maintain a distance of at least 6 feet (2m) between yourself and other people. If you must leave home, avoid places where people are in groups or crowded. Have supplies and food delivered to your home.
•	Use CDC’s Coronavirus Self-Checker to help you make decisions about seeking appropriate medical care
It’s very important for people who live with or take care of people with cancer to take steps to keep themselves healthy as well. All of their actions will impact their loved one’s health and well-being.
Tips for Caregivers & Family Members:
•	Watch for symptoms of infection: fever of 100.4ºF (38ºC) or higher, cough, or shortness of breath.
•	Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place or after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. If soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
•	Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and shared objects between use at least daily.
•	Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others, especially those who are vulnerable such as cancer patients.
•	Avoid other people as much as possible (social distancing). Avoid leaving home as much as possible. Maintain a distance of at least 6 feet (2m) between you and other people. If you must leave home, avoid places where people are in groups or crowds. Have supplies and food delivered to your home.
•	If you become ill, immediately separate yourself from your family member or friend with cancer. If possible, stay away from their home. If you must remain in the same household, isolate yourself in a separate room if possible, with a separate bathroom. Make arrangements for someone else to care for your family member or friend with cancer.

Dr. Lisa C. Richardson, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC), discuss what cancer patients and their caregivers need to know to stay well while staying at home during the COVID-19 crisis. Dr. Richardson will outline the proper steps necessary to help lower the chance of spreading an infection to your family member or friend with cancer.

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month
Remember to Protect Your Pets When Spending More Time Outdoors

Spending quality time outside with pets is a great way to be refreshed and experience companionship during this unprecedented time. Many are also adopting or fostering shelter pets as a way to connect. While people are doing all they can to preserve the health and safety of their communities through social distancing, working from home and other actions, pet owners also face the unique responsibility of maintaining their pet’s health and safety when choosing outdoor activities over social gatherings.

Spending time in nature on long walks, taking hikes or even playing in the backyard with your pets is important to their physical health. At the same time, this gives fleas and ticks the opportunity to pounce on dogs and cats and spread serious diseases. Lyme disease is the most common illness caused by tick bites, representing 72% of the tick-borne diseases reported in humans, according to recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data. It can also be fatal if left untreated in both dogs and humans.
Lyme disease has been found in every state in the U.S. According to the CDC, approximately 30,000 cases of Lyme disease occur in the U.S. each year. While dogs and cats cannot spread the disease directly to humans, pets can bring infected ticks into your house from the outdoors.
Pet parents should take measures to protect their four-legged friends, such as checking fur for ticks and having pets protected with a parasite preventative year-round. Long-lasting preventative treatments can help keep your pet safe from these creepy crawlers and your home free from infestation.
Dan Markwalder, DVM and leading expert in Lyme disease and prevention, shares advice that will help keep your dog safe outside this summer, with a special emphasis on protecting pets from fleas, ticks and Lyme disease. He’ll also outline the signs and symptoms associated with Lyme disease in pets.
