The events surrounding the US withdrawal from Afghanistan have been heartbreaking, and the unimaginable suffering experienced by the Afghani people as result of this has motivated us to help in any way we can. While much of the subsequent activity in the area has involved assisting people flee the country, we believe there is a significant need to provide assistance to the millions of those who have been forced to remain. Our mission is to provide funding for the construction of fresh water wells within the many small villages located throughout the country that do not enjoy this basic necessity of everyday life. Those of us who live in the more developed nations take fresh running water for granted. However, as hard as it may be to believe, many of the smaller villages in Afghanistan simply do not have ready access to fresh running water for normal everyday drinking and sanitary purposes.
Since 2017, Farzana’s family has provided funding for more than thirty-five of these fresh water wells in the area surrounding her birth city of Herat, located in the Northwestern part of the country near their border with Iran, where she spent the first nine years of her life. This has enabled families living in this area to enjoy this basic necessity more readily. While each of these wells provides water to literally hundreds of families, there is a great need to construct many more of them to satisfy the substantially greater requirements of these people. Those that do not have a fresh water well in their village must frequently travel great distances by foot and physically carry back very heavy containers of water for their families. An undertaking of this nature can cover distances of several miles and take many hours during the day, a great deal of time and effort that could otherwise be used for more productive endeavors in the further development of their society. As a mother of three, Farzana understands the difficulties and worry over children that a parent experiences under normal conditions, notwithstanding an untenable environment that may exist without basic necessities such as water.

Raising the Bottom: Making Mindful Choices in a Drinking Culture

Lisa is bringing audience awareness to the fact that people quarantined are feeling more and more disconnected, which causes them to turn to substances.

Moms who are expected to home to school & work are finding themselves more stressed-out than ever. People who may already have drinking problems are drinking more because they are alone and alcohol gets delivered to their homes with the click of a mouse or a tap of an app. Lastly, people in new recovery who don’t have a sober network may not even realize zoom meetings were an option and many have relapsed. Calls to The suicide hotlines have also increased significantly.

So, where do we go from here? In this Book, Lisa Boucher offers hope. Hope that any of those in your audience that may be struggling with alcohol and addiction can read this book and know that they’re not alone during these trying times. Within these pages, your audience will be able to examine and become aware of their own behaviors during this time, identify any problem areas, and stop any destructive patterns before they have a chance to take the audience from a place where they can stop to a place where they feel helpless to do so and feel they have no place to turn.

Celebrate an “Irish True” St. Patrick’s Day

Myths and legends about St. Patrick’s Day
Saint Patrick started the tradition of drinking on St. Patrick’s Day
False. St. Patrick’s Day is a Christian feast day, marked by celebration, to commemorate martyrs on the dates of their deaths.

Irish whiskey got involved in this celebration from an old legend. So the story goes, an innkeeper served Saint Patrick a skimpy glass of whiskey and Saint Patrick decided to use the occasion to teach the innkeeper a lesson in generosity. He is said to have told the man a monstrous devil lived in his cellar that was feeding on his dishonesty and would only leave if the innkeeper changed his ways. On his return some time later, he found the innkeeper filling all the patrons’ glasses until they overflowed. Saint Patrick is said to have banished the demon and proclaimed everyone should have a drop of the hard stuff on his feast day, March 17. Fact or fiction, it’s a fine tale to tell your friends and makes Irish whiskey the most authentic drink to enjoy on St. Patrick’s Day.

The color of St. Patrick’s Day is green

False. The color associated with Saint Patrick was blue, not green. The importance of green can be attributed to Saint Patrick using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. The green shamrock was also used from the 18th century as a symbol of Irish rebellion, patriotism and sympathy with Irish independence. In Ireland, whether you wear green or blue on St. Patrick’s Day, it’s the Irish True spirit that matters. Put simply, that means embracing the present and living life, facing its challenges with a courageous and lyrical heart, and a drop of the pure good stuff with friends you really want to drink with … but without the novelty hat!

Leprechauns are a traditional symbol of St. Patrick’s Day
False. In 1959, Walt Disney released a film called ‘Darby O’Gill & the Little People,’ which introduced America to a cheerful, friendly leprechaun, very different from the cranky little man of Irish folklore. But Disney’s imagined version stuck, and the leprechaun is now a symbol of St. Patrick’s Day and Ireland in general.

Ways to celebrate an “Irish True” St. Patrick’s Day

There’s something in the Irish character that puts others at ease – welcoming you on the one hand, while challenging you on the other, agreeing with you but questioning you at the same time. We call it ‘Irish True’. You don’t have to be Irish or go to Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in a way that is ‘Irish True’. Here are some easy and authentic ideas to honor the man.

Take the day off

Start by taking the day off to celebrate with your friends and family. Even the tiny Caribbean Island of Montserrat celebrates St. Patrick’s Day in honor of the proud mutineers of Irish slaves who fought a failed rebellion against their colonial masters on 17 March 1768. Ever since, in true Irish spirit, St. Patrick’s Day has been a public holiday on Montserrat – the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean. There are only two countries in the world where St. Patrick’s Day is a public holiday: Ireland and Montserrat.

‘Have the craic’

Craic pronounced ‘Crack’ is a Gaelic word, with no exact English translation. Put simply, having the craic is having a good time or a laugh. You don’t have to participate in a St. Patrick’s Day parade to enjoy the craic. One way is to visit your favorite bar, screaming with character and soul, to share great memories.

Share a Toast

Saint Patrick and his monks began complementing oral storytelling with writing. This tradition now remains in the blood of the Irish and many practice storytelling and other verbal arts in pubs. Toasting is a big part of Irish culture, it should speak from the heart and is meant to be shared with those most important to you.

Today, lack of access to safe water and adequate sanitation is one of the most important threats to human well-being throughout the world. Water-related diseases are a major contributor to the global burden of illness. No other single intervention is more likely to have a significant impact on global health than the provision of safe water. This timely conference at the United Nations seeks to show how to fully integrate safe water in countries’ disease reduction strategies — a pre-requisite to achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The conference also seeks to provide the basis for preventive action by leaders of governments, international organizations, and private sector, managing critical water resources and services for public health.

Almost fifty per cent of the developing worlds population 2.5 billion people lack improved sanitation facilities, and over 884 million people still use unsafe drinking water sources. Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation services, coupled with poor hygiene practices, kills and sickens thousands of children every day, and leads to impoverishment and diminished opportunities for thousands more.

Diseases spread by unsafe water cause 3 million deaths a year. Young children are the most likely to suffer and die from these diseases. Diarrhea, primarily a disease of dirty water, is the biggest killer of children under five in poor countries, resulting in nearly 4,000 preventable deaths each day, 1.8 million per year. At any given time, almost half of all people living in developing countries are suffering from a health problem caused by lack of safe water and sanitation that undermines their ability to study or work. Every year, children miss more than 443 million school days because of water-related illnesses.
