Largest Student-Led Organization Tackles Food Waste to Feed Hungry Families at San Francisco’s Biggest Tailgate Party

San Francisco, CA – As excitement builds for the Big Game in Santa Clara, local tailgate parties are set to take center stage. Among the festivities, Food Recovery Network (FRN) sees these events as vital opportunities to combat hunger in our communities. At Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and FRN will work together to ensure that no surplus food goes to waste, benefiting families in need in the Bay Area.

For the third consecutive year, Hellmann’s is partnering with FRN—which has recovered surplus food from the Big Game for multiple years—to rescue high-quality food from Big Game tailgates and redirect it to communities in need.

“We’re proud to partner once again with Food Recovery Network to make food recovery part of the Big Game experience,” said Jessica Grigoriou, Senior Vice President of Condiments Marketing in North America, Unilever. “By rescuing high-quality surplus food from events like Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate and inspiring people to see the value in their own leftovers, we’re showing how small actions can add up to real impact—because good food should be enjoyed, not wasted.”

Last year, FRN achieved remarkable success during the Big Game, recovering 12,348 pounds of surplus food from two Hellmann’s-supported recovery events in one day, equating to approximately 10,290 meals that were provided to the New Orleans Mission. The recovery included high-value items such as seafood, chicken, and butter—essential ingredients that significantly impact local organizations fighting hunger.

This year, FRN is ready to make an even larger impact in the Bay Area. FRN staff, alongside dedicated students and alumni from the University of San Francisco, Cal Poly, San Francisco State University, and Case Western Reserve, will be on-site at Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate. All recovered food will be donated to the Delancey Street Foundation and Samaritan House, vital resources for people experiencing food insecurity in the area.

Regina Harmon, CEO of Food Recovery Network, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Hellmann’s has been unwavering in their support of our food recovery efforts over the past three years and in our mission to raise awareness about preventing food waste. Their partnership has been instrumental in our efforts to recover high-quality surplus food, enabling us to help local families experiencing hunger. Together, we are making a meaningful impact on both hunger and sustainability.”

FRN’s commitment to large-scale food recovery extends beyond the festivities of the football game. A recent partnership with Gaylord Hotels in Washington, D.C., and San Diego has resulted in over 100,000 pounds of food saved over the last few years. Ryan Verhulst, Hotel Manager at Gaylord National, stated, “Food recovery is essential to reaching our sustainability goals. As part of the Marriott family, we emphasize nurturing our world and reducing our environmental footprint. This includes decreasing our food waste and increasing our contribution to our community. Partnerships like the one we have with Food Recovery Network help us reach our goals while also giving back to local families in need.”

Food insecurity is rapidly sweeping across our great nation, and those of us who can stand up and fight will undoubtedly want to stand with companies such as Sierra Nevada Brewing Company who have donated $1 Million to Community Nonprofits during this pandemic, and they’re just getting started! The holiday season is a time of giving unprecedented by any other event during a year. This is especially important to remember during this year when the COVID19 Pandemic has quelled our celebrations and impacted roughly 20% of U.S. households. It has hampered abilities to pay bills even as important as mortgage and rent and is leaving a record number of Americans facing unemployment, decreased wages, increased expenses for essential items as they become demanded commodities, healthcare, and childcare. Some have even been left without a home for the holidays. Efforts across the nation that Sierra Nevada has partnered with include Rethink (New York), Community Servings (Boston), Common Pantry(Chicago), Sol Collective (Sacramento), #HashtagLunchbag (Los Angeles), Second Harvest (San Jose), Del Mar Village Association (San Diego), SF New Deal (San Francisco), Carolina Farm Trust (Charlotte), and Second Helpings (Atlanta).

In August, Sierra Nevada unveiled its new program centered around the release of Dankful IPA, a generously hoppy beer launched to help the brewery raise awareness for a variety of nonprofits working to support local communities. A hoppy West Coast-style IPA, Dankful is now available at retail stores across the country. The beer is 7.4% ABV with 55 IBU’s and resinous flavor notes of pine and tropical fruit. Regardless of the purchase, the company has committed to this $1 million pledge to help! On your program, Robin will discuss:

Last week consumers had their laptops charged and their credit cards readyin anticipation of the annual shopping event Amazon Prime Day. With more than150M prime members potentially searching for deals on October 13th and 14th,you might think that traffic at brick and mortar retailers was down on thosedays — but surprisingly, it wasn’t — at least not on a national scale.

The national in-store traffic data analyzed by Zenreach,the walk-through marketing company, found that from September 13 through October12, the average percentage of normal traffic was at 44.8%. Thisincreased 3% during the two Prime Days to 47.8%. But in New York, it did infact decrease, 3% actually.

Restaurant traffic, on the other hand, uniformly took a dip. Nationally,restaurants experienced a decrease of almost 2% in foot traffic on prime daycompared to the previous month. In New York, it decreased 1.1%.

Commanding General

Army Reserve Medical Command

Major General Jonathan Woodson assumed duty as Army Reserve Medical Command Commanding General on March 31, 2019, following his previous assignment as 3rd Medical Command DeputyCommanding General.

A native of New York City, Major General Woodson is a graduate of the city college of New York and the New York University School of Medicine. He received his postgraduate medical education at the Massachusetts General Hospital /Harvard Medical School and completed residency training in Internal Medicine, General, and Vascular Surgery. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Critical Care Surgery. Additionally, he holds a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.

major general Woodson has served in a variety of assignments from the tactical level through Corps which include Commander of the 399th Combat Support Hospital,330th Medical Brigade, and 804th Medical Brigade, Deputy Commander for the ArmyReserve Medical Command, and assignment as the Assistant Surgeon General for reserve Affairs, Force Structure, and Mobilization. His operational deployments include Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation EnduringFreedom. Additionally, Major General Woodson deployed to Kosovo as a part ofTask Force Medical Falcon IV.

In his civilian capacity, Major General Woodson is the Larz Anderson Professor in Management and professor of the Practice at the Boston University Questrom School of Business; Professor of Surgery at Boston University School of Medicine; and Professor of HealthLaw, Policy and Management at the Boston University School of Public Health. Heis also Director of the university-wide Institute for Health System Innovation and Policy. From 2010-2016, following his appointment by President BarackObama, he served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense (ASD) for Health Affairs for the United States Department of Defense. In this role, he served as the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense for all health and force health protection-related issues and ensured the effective execution of the Department of Defense’s medical mission. His organization provided and maintained medical readiness for the medical services including and during military operations, those held in control of the military services, and those entitled to Tricare. He exercised authority, direction, and control over the Defense Health Program($50+ billion), Defense Health Agency, Uniformed Services University of theHealth Sciences, Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Defense Center ofExcellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury, and the TricareHealth Plan serving 9.5 million beneficiaries. During his tenure, MG Woodsonled the Military Health System through the most significant transformation in 5decades. For this work, he was awarded the Department of Defense DistinguishedPublic Service Medal (highest award given by DoD). While serving as ASD, MGWoodson co-Chaired several Presidential Commissions and Delegations. In 2015he was named one of the most influential medical policy leaders in Washington(Executive Mosaic) and in 2016 one of the Top 25 minority executives in healthcare (Modern Health). In 2017, the George Washington Milken Institute and school of Public Health and Black Doctors.Org named him one of the top African Americans in healthcare. Additionally, Savoy Magazine named him to their list of Heroes in Medicine.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (1 Oak LeafCluster), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (2 Oak LeafClusters), NATO Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Expert Field Medical Badge, Flight Surgeon Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.

9-year old girl shows off skills during Harlem Globetrotters school assembly

During a Harlem Globetrotters’ school assembly, 9-year old Samaya Clark-Gabriel showed off her amazing ball handling skills in front of classmates, teachers, and her idols at P.S. 309 in Brooklyn. Globetrotters’ stars Bull Bullard and Hoops Green spoke to students about their “T.E.A.M. Up at School” program, which discourages bullying. In the video below, Bull and Hoops mixed in their skills with the important message. When students had a chance to learn a Globetrotter move, Clark-Gabriel volunteered and dazzled with her impressive dribbling skills.

The Globetrotters created the school assembly with the National Campaign to Stop Violence. The program discourages bullying, cultivates empathy and assures the bullied that they are not alone. T.E.A.M. stands for Talk, Empathy, Ask, and Mobilize. The program’s curriculum was finalized last month.

The Globetrotters are in New York City giving back to the community and preparing for their new Fan Powered World Tour, which will bring games to Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center over Thanksgiving Weekend and seven additional games throughout NYC, New Jersey, and Long Island after Christmas. Clark-Gabriel is scheduled to surprise fans during the Globetrotters’ game on the court at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 23.
