Felicia Young is a social action artist and the founder of Earth Celebrations, a non-profit organization on the Lower East Side of New York City since 1991, to engage communities to generate ecological and social change through the arts. For the past 30 years Earth Celebrations’ programs, www.earthcelebrations.com,
have applied the inspirational power of the arts to build community, collaboration and action on climate change, water quality, river restoration, waste management, and the preservation of species, habitats, nature, gardens, parks, and a healthy urban environment. Earth Celebrations has pioneered and developed innovative strategies utilizing collaborative arts to build broad-based coalitions and diverse sector partnerships with local organizations, academic institutions, government agencies, schools and community residents to work together and mobilize action to achieve common goals and ecological, policy and social change. The current Ecological City: Art & Climate Solutions project engages artists, gardeners, schools, organizations, youth and residents to collaborate over 9 months co-creating theatrical pageant, a procession with 20 site performances, to celebrate climate solution and sustainability initiatives throughout the community gardens, neighborhood and waterfront on the Lower East Side of New York City.

Closing Closing – VIDEO CLIP – The Bio-Remediation Sculpture was created for Earth Celebrations’ Ecological City: Procession for Climate Solutions by local artist/gardener Dee Dee Maucher from earth with fermented micro organisms, willow branches and other nutrient rich organic materials collected. The sculpture rode on on a cycle-rickshaw throughout the 5 hour procession and was offered to the East River at the end of the day. She floated on a reed raft and headed due south offering her nutrients for the cleansing of the river.

“Meeting MacGuffin,” An Animated Ecological Thriller Prior to Hitting the International Film Festival Circuit

JAN 30, 2017- NY, NY- ClothesPin Freak Productions announced today that an invitation-only preview screening of “Meeting MacGuffin” will be held Thursday, Feb. 2 from 8-10 pm at Brooklyn’s Wythe Hotel Screening Room. “Speaking Of Freaks”, a short documentary by filmmaker Hamad Altourah about the making of “Meeting MacGuffin” and Catya’s art in general, will also be screened. Following this screening, both films plan to hit the International film festival circuit.
“Meeting MacGuffin: An Animated Ecological Thriller” is the sequel to the multi-award-winning animated stop-motion film “Hanging By A Thread” (2013), the second in a trilogy of short films written, animated and directed by Catya Plate.

“Meeting MacGuffin” continues the tale which began in a post-apocalyptic future where a new breed, a group of scientists called the Clothespin Freaks, are reassembling the fragmented remnants of humanity in order to give humanity a second chance to restore balance to the world.

The script for “Meeting MacGuffin” made it into the Quarter Finals (Top 40 Shorts) at the renowned Cinequest Screenwriting Competition in 2015.

“Meeting MacGuffin” was crowd funded via Hatchfund. Here is a link to the trailer for Meeting MacGuffin: https://vimeo.com/170560848

Born in Barcelona, Spain, and raised in Germany, Catya attended the Werkkunstschule, Köln, before coming to New York on a Fulbright Scholarship for postgraduate studies at School of Visual Arts.

In 2003, Plate invented the Clothespin Freak characters, two-headed characters made of clear clothespins, sewn pieces and doll’s body parts, in a series of drawings as “a serio-comic response to our angst-ridden times.” In Plate’s paintings, sculptures, artist’s book and installations, the Clothespin Freaks continue to evolve. In 2009, inspired by filmmakers like Jan Svankmajer and the Bolex Brothers, Catya created Clothespin Freak Productions to bring her “Clothespin Freaks” characters to life through stop-motion animation short films.

Based on Plate’s “Clothespin Tarot” artist book from 2007, “The Reading” was born. In 2012 “The Reading”, was awarded Best Animated Film at the Seattle True Independent Film Festival and received an Outstanding Achievement Award for Experimental Film at the Williamsburg International Film Festival. In 2013, Plate produced “Hanging By A Thread”, the first short in an upcoming trilogy. As of 2016, “Hanging By A Thread” has won 9 awards including a Female Filmmaker Award for Outstanding Achievement at FrackFest, a Platinum Remi Award at the 48th Annual WorldFest Houston and two Awards of Excellence at the prestigious IndieFEST Film and Best Shorts Competition. It has screened in over 22 film festivals in the US and abroad, like the Academy Award-qualifying St. Louis International Film Festival. Catya has recently been added to the prestigious GREAT WOMEN ANIMATORS list and was a juror for animation and expea juror for animation and experimental film at the celebrated Brooklyn Film Festival.

Catya heads to Spain at the end of February to conduct a workshop with students from the Fine Arts School. The resulting animation will be screened at ANIMAC in Lleida, Spain, as part of the upcoming ANIMAC International Film Festival. The title of the workshop is– WATER IS LIFE: IMAGINING A WORLD WHERE WATER IS THE RAREST AND MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE. Following this “Meeting MacGuffin” hits the International film festival circuit. Several film festivals have already asked about hosting the world premiere of “Meeting MacGuffin.”

Plate’s mentor, Heather Dell, Art Historian and Director at Magnan Metz Gallery in New York says, “Catya Plate conveys her delicious and devilish vision with humor, wisdom, and a big helping of incredible technical and creative execution. Her work is incredibly successful, proving that Third Generation Feminist artists have as much to contribute to Contemporary Art as their predecessors. Plate’s unapologetic reclamation of once feminized materials in conjunction with state of the art technology secures her place in this new art historical and film making genre”.

More information on Catya Plate and Meeting MacGuffin at www.catyaplate.com

Film Series

In order to promote environmental protection and ecological awareness, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO-NY) will hold a film series featuring six new ecological and environmental documentaries from Taiwan from June 1st-22nd, 2012.

These films highlight some recent initiatives in Taiwan towards making a more sustainable and environmentally friendly society. Megastructures: EcoARK (6/1 18:30 p.m.), produced in cooperation with National Geographic Channels, chronicles the construction of the spectacular green exposition hall for the 2011 Taipei International Floral Expo using 1.5 million recycled PET bottles. The project was among 12 finalists for the Wall Street Journal’s 2011 Asia Innovation Awards. Trash to Treasure and Super Solar Yacht (6/8 18:30 p.m.), both also co-produced with National Geographic Channels, depict how discarded materials are transformed into valuable products, and how Taiwan produced the first solar powered luxury yacht. Birds Without Borders (6/15 18:30 p.m.), which won the Earth Vision Tokyo Global Environmental Film Festival’s Special Prize for Biodiversity and the WorldFest Houston International Film Festival’s Gold Remi award, chronicles the migration of the endangered black-faced spoonbill and the efforts of a group of scientists and conservationists to protect their natural habitat. Eco Taiwan: Building Magic and Species Wars (6/22 18:30 p.m.), two films produced in cooperation with the Discovery Channel, show how innovative and passionate individuals in Taiwan have committed themselves to designing inexpensive, low-tech, low emission buildings and to protecting endangered species. Attached, please find a detailed synopses and screening schedule for all of the quality films in the series.

Drawings to win recycled products designed and made in Taiwan will be held after each screening. Audience members can win slick iPhone cases and elegant wine carriers!
About Regina Varolli

Regina Varolli grew up in kitchens. The daughter of a restaurateur mom from Los Angeles, California and a chef-dad from Reggio Emilia, Italy, her first attempt at gastronomy was making escargot at age 6, with snails foraged from the back garden. While that didn’t work too well—everyone spit them out—she never stopped approaching food as an adventure.

Today she lives in Manhattan and isn’t afraid to eat anything, or to spit out the bad stuff. Though her taste is refined by fine dining and perfect pastry, she still craves a great burger and fries, and thinks Ghirardelli instant brownie mix is fabulous. Gina recently launched her new food blog, Dov’e La Regina? , and is currently authoring three culinary titles for the 99 Series of Books.
