Communities of color, especially African-American communities, are deeply suffering as they face violence, injustice, lack of access and inequality. This cannot stand. We must work together to take on and dismantle racism when and where we see it, and work toward more just, united, healthy, and peaceful communities. We all suffer when racism exists.

Peace Day Philly promotes and collaborates on programming related to personal, local and/or global peace, on and around the United Nations International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”), SEPTEMBER 21.

Peace Day Philly was founded in 2011 by a small group of individuals and organizational representatives, including the UN Association of Greater Philadelphia, as a grassroots initiative. PDP became a formal non-profit in 2013. As of 2018, Peace Day Philly became a non-governmental organization (NGO) affiliated with the United Nations.

In 2011, Peace Day Philly hosted 3 free, diverse peace programs in Philadelphia. By 2013, there were well over 20 peace programs taking place annually during the week in which Peace Day falls, offered by a wide range of organizations and groups. In past years, children and youth have participated in peace activities in schools and libraries across the region, and the Philadelphia Police Department has offered numerous additional youth and community building programs in Philly neighborhoods.

Peace Day Philly offers and collaborates on programs, but many of the activities that make up each year’s activities are offered by Philly-region organizations based on their work as it relates to peace and justice. 20-60 Organizations are involved each year.

PEACE DAY PHILLY WORKS TO:
– ENCOURAGE a broad-base of organizations to use the platform of the United Nations International Day of Peace (observed worldwide on and around September 21) to offer and/or engage in an activity related to peace that is in keeping with their mission/goals.
– COLLABORATE with other organizations and groups to develop and present high-quality, content rich programs on a wide range of topics related to personal, local and/or global peace.
– PROVIDE a wide range of resources and links via our website and social media for organizations, groups and individuals to engage in Peace Day.
– ENGAGE civic offices, city Departments and leaders to use Peace Day Philly to forward ongoing safety enhancement and community resiliency work taking place year round.
– PROMOTE peace programs and activities – both local and global – throughout the year through community partnerships.
– SUSTAIN efforts and initiatives sparked by the International Day of Peace whenever possible.

At twenty-one years old, Hope O Baker made one of the hardest decisions a person can make: she placed her son for adoption. She lived with her son’s adoptive mother while she was pregnant and pursued an open adoption. After her son was born, Hope tried to resume her life.

But the difficulty of letting her child go gnawed at Hope. Even though she had it together on the outside—graduating college and excelling in her career—on the inside she was battling a destructive cycle of depression and addiction. When life was at its darkest, Hope managed to find her way back to the light. It’s a journey she continues to this day.

Now an Innovative 4-H Program Is Changing That for Millions

The “American Dream” is built on the idea that with hard work, upward mobility and success are possible. In our ever evolving and technology dependent society, digital skills and broadband access are necessary tools for achievement.

However, more than 24 million people living in the U.S., including 19 million in rural communities, do not have access to broadband, also known as high speed internet. That leaves a large portion of today’s teens locked out when it comes to high speed internet. This essential service in today’s economy impacts everything from children’s education to their future economic mobility.

Recent research shows that overall, teens without broadband access feel less equipped online with it comes to connecting, creating and learning. The research also shows:

 Almost half of teens surveyed said they’ve struggled to complete homework due to slow internet connections
 Teens without broadband are less optimistic about their social mobility for higher education & careers
 43% of rural teens surveyed plan to leave their hometowns and 34% of those teens cite poor internet connectivity as the reason; which means these towns are losing talent and future innovation.

As leaders in positive youth development, National 4-H Council partnered with Microsoft on the 4-H Tech Changemakers program. The initiative is aimed at closing the connectivity gap in rural areas by empowering teens to bring technology and digital skills to their communities. The program works to position digital skills as a valuable life skill that’s necessary for improving non-urban communities’ path towards economic mobility.

The 4-H Tech Changemakers are working with broadband service providers throughout the U.S., along with community members and civic leaders to help teens gain the digital skills needed to benefit from technology and high-speed connectivity, which includes everything from online safety to computer basics and device training.

On Friday, April 24, join members of the 4-H Tech Changemakers to learn more about the programs being implemented, how they’re helping to bridge this technological gap and make sure that all community members across the country have the tools and skills they need to achieve the American dream.

The NFL’s has made a concerted effort to encourage female fans and improve the league’s image in recent years. That’s why the new SHE’S NEXT, Empowered by Visa is announcing a new global initiative in Atlanta to help women entrepreneurs. It’s hoped that having this important event in Atlanta it will draw more attention to challenges facing women entrepreneurs.

Even with this success, a new survey by Visa shows nearly three-quarters of women (73%) report it was difficult to obtain the funding they needed to start their own business. In fact, six in ten (61%) self-fund their business. That’s why the new SHE’S NEXT, Empowered by Visa program is announcing a new global initiative to help women entrepreneurs. Re-imagining Childbirth & Empowering Mothers in the 21st Century
Internationally-known Imagery Expert and Psychologist Dr. Catherine Shainberg will share how positive imagery can transform the journey of childbirth, from pre-conception to motherhood. The publication of her new book DreamBirth marks a sea change for mothers-to-be and birthing professionals in their approach to each stage of pregnancy, delivery and bonding. DreamBirth lives up to its subtitle, “transforming the journey of childbirth.” It accomplishes this with imagery.

Dr. Shainberg has 161 precise, yet elegant imaginal exercises for every possible situation that could arise in the process of birthing a newborn. From conception through the first, second and third trimester, labor, delivery, post-partum and bonding — are all included. Each DreamBirth exercise contains imagery that speaks directly to the body and results in actual physical or emotional change. While other techniques, like Lamaze, try to manipulate the mother away from her experience – DreamBirth brings the woman deep into her dreaming, which is her experiencing. When fully immersed in dreaming the mothers enter a state that athletes call “the zone.” In the zone the body does its job effortlessly, painlessly.

The exercises allow the expectant mother to take control of her unique birthing experience. “Focusing our intention lets us consciously begin the process of dreaming forth a new life,” Dr. Shainberg states.

Dr. Catherine Shainberg is an internationally known expert in the uses of Imagery for transformation on all levels. She has designed and developed, in over 40 years of experience, modern applications for ancient science which have proved effective in thousands of cases. ‘THE RISE OF CONGO: EMPOWERING THROUGH EDUCATION’ FUNDRAISER

WHAT: Noëlla Coursaris Musunka, Founder & CEO of the Georges Malaika Foundation (GMF), host their 2nd annual New York Reception celebrating Congolese Culture, Fashion and Music.

Named in memory of Noëlla Coursaris Musunka’s father, Georges, and the Swahili word malaika, for ‘angel,’ GMF empowers through education. GMF is dedicated to the advancement of African communities by providing educational opportunities to young girls. In 2011 GMF finished construction on their first Girls’ School in the DRC. 152 girls are enrolled and receive a fully comprehensive program including free tuition, school supplies, uniforms, and two healthy meals a day. In 2012 GMF built two fresh water wells as part of a collaborative effort with the Voss Foundation, and is now providing clean drinking water to the entire community. GMF’s latest project is a partnership with FIFA to build a community center that will function as a base for sports, health, education and enterprise.

Noëlla Coursaris Musunka was born in Lubumbashi, DRC. Noëlla was educated in Belgium and Switzerland, and after achieving a degree in business management, she moved to London and broke into the world of international modeling. Noëlla’s success brought her to New York where she started the Georges Malaika Foundation in 2007, in tandem with her active modeling career.

Noëlla has been featured in a 30-minute special on CNN’s African Voices and CNN’s Connect the World. Hoping to bring international attention to the education dilemma in Africa, she has addressed UNICEF and the Congolese Parliament about issues confronting underprivileged girls.
