We must work together to take on and dismantle racism when and where we see it, and work toward more just, united, healthy, and peaceful communities. We all suffer when racism exists.

Peace Day Philly promotes and collaborates on programming related to personal, local and/or global peace, on and around the United Nations International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”), SEPTEMBER 21.

Peace Day Philly was founded in 2011 by a small group of individuals and organizational representatives, including the UN Association of Greater Philadelphia, as a grassroots initiative. PDP became a formal non-profit in 2013. As of 2018, Peace Day Philly became a non-governmental organization (NGO) affiliated with the United Nations.

In 2011, Peace Day Philly hosted 3 free, diverse peace programs in Philadelphia. By 2013, there were well over 20 peace programs taking place annually during the week in which Peace Day falls, offered by a wide range of organizations and groups. In past years, children and youth have participated in peace activities in schools and libraries across the region, and the Philadelphia Police Department has offered numerous additional youth and community building programs in Philly neighborhoods.

Peace Day Philly offers and collaborates on programs, but many of the activities that make up each year’s activities are offered by Philly-region organizations based on their work as it relates to peace and justice. 20-60 Organizations are involved each year.

PEACE DAY PHILLY WORKS TO:
– ENCOURAGE a broad-base of organizations to use the platform of the United Nations International Day of Peace (observed worldwide on and around September 21) to offer and/or engage in an activity related to peace that is in keeping with their mission/goals.
– COLLABORATE with other organizations and groups to develop and present high-quality, content rich programs on a wide range of topics related to personal, local and/or global peace.
– PROVIDE a wide range of resources and links via our website and social media for organizations, groups and individuals to engage in Peace Day.
– ENGAGE civic offices, city Departments and leaders to use Peace Day Philly to forward ongoing safety enhancement and community resiliency work taking place year round.
– PROMOTE peace programs and activities – both local and global – throughout the year through community partnerships.

If you have spent any time on social media in the past several years, you will have seen harassment and hate in all its ugliness. Social media platforms, initially touted as mechanisms to bring the world together, have grown into petri dishes breeding hostility, harassment, and hateful discourse. Hate and antisocial behaviors are also increasingly prevalent offline.

One corporation which has long experienced hostility is Philip Morris International (PMI). The company says that comes with being a prominent player in an industry viewed unfavorably by much of society because of its core product: cigarettes.

Today, even as the company is working to deliver a smoke-free future thanks to science-based, better alternatives for adults who would otherwise continue to smoke —moving ever closer to the time when it will completely end sales of cigarettes in the international markets where they operate—vestiges of that hate remain, impeding an open and fact-based dialogue on the potential these innovative products represent for smokers and public health.

The consequences of hate and polarization transcend industry sectors and impede progress across society. That’s why the company wants to elevate the conversation around some solutions to the problem of what they are calling “hate in the air.” PMI has conducted a survey and developed a report from the survey responses, to try to find some answers to this growing problem in society and understand what factors have led to the rise in hate and misinformation and the loss of civil discourse and respect for objective truth.

PMI surveyed 5,000 adults in five markets: Brazil, France, South Africa, South Korea, and the United States. 70% reported that the level of hate and hate speech in their country has increased in the past two years and 52% worry that hate, and hostility are hampering progress in society.

Marian Salzman, senior vice president, global communications at Philip Morris International (PMI), discusses the survey results and the company’s report and recommendations on the rise of hate.

Salzman says while hate globally is on the rise, this trend should not surprise us. She says our modern culture of news consumption too often cages us within echo chambers self-constructed to affirm our beliefs and push out conflicting data and perspectives.

She’ll also offer ways to begin engaging in constructive dialogue. Salzman is considered one of the world’s top trendspotters and throughout her career has been at the leading edge of the rapid revolution in technology and social change.

Company officials say their report is intended to contribute to the conversation around hate and division and encourage more individuals and organizations to work toward resolving these critical challenges. Some recommendations include:

Engage, engage, engage: Relentlessly seek out opportunities for interaction, dialogue, and debate, even with—perhaps especially with—those who consider you the enemy.

End exclusionary policies and practices: Among survey respondents, 77% agree that society’s biggest challenges will never be solved if we demonize and exclude those with whom we disagree.

Champion the primacy of science and fact: Using data and proof points as anchors, companies must use their full voice to show up in conversations and counter the noise created by those seeking to confuse or mislead.

Help Keep Kids and Teens Engaged in Learning as Social Distancing Continues

Learning loss is a real issue every summer, but in the unprecedented era of COVID-19, many students already began the summer at an educational disadvantage. As schools closed their doors weeks ahead of time, students completed the school year at home, relying on virtual classrooms and take-home work.

The digital divide made it a lot harder for some children to complete school work, especially those from low-income and minority households, who may not have reliable internet access. In homes where parents did not have the choice of tele-work, older children may have needed to care for their younger siblings so parents could work, making it even harder to do school work under already challenging circumstances.

Now there’s concern over how to keep kids engaged in learning this summer. Research finds children typically fall behind academically each summer, losing about two months’ worth of math skills during the summer. Low-income youth lose more than two months’ worth of reading skills, while their middle-class peers make slight gains.[1] Unchecked, summer learning losses can cause disadvantaged kids to fall behind and possibly jeopardize their chances of graduating from high school.

Public schools and some afterschool programs like Boys & Girls Clubs may remain closed this summer to prevent the spread of the virus, and that means students have lost an important lifeline – a place to connect with friends and teachers, work on their social and emotional skills (which help kids achieve success in areas like academics, arts, leadership and service) and access a typical learning experience. In this segment, parents can take some valuable cues and gain advice to help their kids from a youth development expert from Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

July 6 -11 has been designated as national Summer Learning Week, the perfect time to hear from Chrissy Chen, the Senior Director of Youth Development Programs at Boys & Girls Clubs of America. She’ll discuss how parents can learn some important tips to keep kids and teens learning during summer, especially due to the changes that happened during this recent school year due to COVID-19. Closing Closing – VIDEO CLIP – The Bio-Remediation Sculpture was created for Earth Celebrations’ Ecological City: Procession for Climate Solutions by local artist/gardener Dee Dee Maucher from earth with fermented micro organisms, willow branches and other nutrient rich organic materials collected. The sculpture rode on on a cycle-rickshaw throughout the 5 hour procession and was offered to the East River at the end of the day. She floated on a reed raft and headed due south offering her nutrients for the cleansing of the river.

Girls at a very young age are curious about science and math—about 74% of kindergarten girls want to go into STEM—but by the time they reach middle school, only 15-20% remain interested.

Scientist, author, and professor Cristal Glangchai, PhD, attributes this to the way educators, parents, and the media talk to girls about pursuing STEM careers. She argues that a key part of raising strong, confident young women is giving them the tools of entrepreneurship to engage in STEM.

Glangchai’s new book, VentureGirls: Raising Girls to be Tomorrow’s Leaders (HarperCollins; May 2018) explains what has kept young girls out of STEM fields, as well as the practical applications of STEM learning, and how we can address the gender imbalance therein.

Dr. Glangchai offers a unique solution based on her own experience as an engineer and entrepreneur as well as the founder of VentureLab, a nonprofit that empowers kids, especially girls, with an entrepreneurial mind-set. VentureGirls.

Dr. Glangchai can discuss or write about the following:

• Women and STEM: How, as of now, women make up only 29% of the science and engineering workforce. Dr. Glangchai can share her fundamentals for empowering young girls in STEM.

• Creating Young Entrepreneurs: 65% of kids will have jobs that we cannot even imagine today. How parents can and should encourage kids as young as 5 years old to embrace their innovativeness and entrepreneurial mindset.
