RECESSIONPROOFING JOBS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION
60th ANNIVERSARY OF ENGINEERS WEEK

The future looks bright for engineers. Theyre in great demand and they boast seven of the top ten best-paying college degrees. So youd think engineering majors are on the rise in the US, right? Wrong.

US engineering majors have actually been in decline for decades, even though a recent survey of salaries by PayScale Inc. that finds that seven of the top ten best-paying college degrees of 2009 and 2010 belong to engineering majors, and the old economy is growing faster than the new.

In fact, engineering jobs are expected to actually grow much faster than other industries over the next decade according to the US Dept of Labor Statistics for 2010 2011, especially in environmental and civil engineering. But America is lagging behind countries like China, which has 5 times more engineers than the US.

Thats why on the 60th anniversary of Engineering Week, engineers around the US are reaching out to raise public understanding about the role of engineers in society, and why its a field thats creative, imaginative and fun!

Jacqueline Rast, PE, LEED AP [Jackie] is a trail-blazing role model in engineering.
Shes a president of the engineering company CH2M Hills Facility and Infrastructure Division responsible for London 2012 Olympics and MASDAR sustainable city in Abu Dhabi. Past experience includes the Superfund program, Panama Canal Expansion and the Mumbai International Airport Expansion.
