Early Detection is Key to Reducing the Chance of Serious Outcomes of
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

www.vascularcures.org

When most people think of heart disease, their association is with coronary artery disease (CAD), where fatty deposits and plaque can build up in the arteries that carry blood from your heart through the body. But artery disease can affect more than just the heart. The limited blood flow caused by artery disease can be dangerous, leading to blood clots and a lesser known but very serious disease called peripheral artery disease (PAD).

CAD is the most common type of heart disease and is the greatest cause of morbidity and mortality in the U.S.1 Approximately 18.2 million adults over age 20 are living with CAD in the U.S.2 PAD affects an estimated 20 million Americans,3 yet only approximately 8.5 million are diagnosed.4 If left untreated, CAD and PAD can increase the risk of serious health outcomes such as heart attack, stroke,5 and – in the case of PAD – acute limb ischemia or even a lower limb amputation.6

It’s important to be aware of the potential connection between these two artery diseases. If you have CAD, you may have an increased risk of PAD – and vice versa.6 In fact, more than 40% of individuals with CAD also have PAD.1

Further, these conditions have overlapping risk factors – including hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes and smoking (even formerly smoking).6 In fact, smoking is the most common preventable cause of PAD.7 Up to 90 percent of people with PAD have a history of smoking,8 and smokers have a 4x greater risk of PAD than nonsmokers.9

Early detection is key to reducing the chance of serious outcomes. Knowing your risk of CAD and PAD – and talking to your doctor – are important first steps.

Dr. Veita Bland, renowned hypertension specialist and family physician, and Pamela Parker, PAD patient and passionate advocate for artery disease awareness, discusses the importance of early detection, intervention and management of CAD and PAD.

Raising Awareness About Liver Testing Alternatives
AN EASIER, LESS EXPENSIVE DIAGNOSIS
Non-Invasive Approaches Can Lower Risks and Cut Costs

Hearing that you need a liver biopsy can be worrisome. Yet, many patients undergo an uncomfortable and risky procedure when a less invasive–and less expensive–approach would achieve the same thing, all because they didn’t know that there were other options.

Liver biopsy is risky and invasive. In the case of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its advanced stages of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), it can be unreliable and expensive. A typical liver biopsy can cost more than $7,000. For certain patients, advances in technology are offering new, non-invasive ways to get an accurate diagnosis without having to undergo a costly surgical procedure.

Non-invasive diagnostic options include:

● Ultrasound
● Shear Wave Elastography
● MRE (magnetic resonance elastography)

These non-invasive approaches can also mean fewer doctor visits, lower costs, a quicker diagnosis, and no surgical risk. Even so, many are unaware of their options and choose an invasive biopsy procedure due to lack of information.

A new awareness effort aims to change that by educating providers and empowering patients to make choices that will impact their health and their pocketbook.

NASH IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON DISEASES THAT INCREASE YOUR RISK WITHCOVID.
INTERNATIONAL NASH DAY IS JUNE 12TH, DESIGNED TO RAISE AWARENESS OF A TYPE OF PROGRESSIVE LIVER DISEASE THAT AFFECTS ABOUT 20-MILLION AMERICANS.
HERE TO TALK ABOUT INTERNATIONAL NASH DAY, AND THE NEED TO RAISE AWARENESS, ARE WAYNE ESKRIDGE, FOUNDER OFTHE FATTY LIVER FOUNDATION AND CIRRHOSIS PATIENT, ALONG WITH DONNA CRYER, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE GLOBAL LIVER INSTITUTE.
BIO-Donna R. Cryer, JD, is the founder and CEO of the Global Liver Institute (GLI), the only patient-driven liver health non-profit operating in the US and Europe. She has channeled her personal experience as an IBD patient and 25-year liver transplant recipient into professional advocacy across a career in law, policy, consulting, public relations, clinical trial recruitment, and nonprofit management. Donna is a graduate of Harvard-Radcliffe Colleges and GeorgetownUniversity Law Center.
GLI convenes the NASH Council, LiverCancers Council, International NASH Day(TM), and the Advanced Advocacy Academy, equipping liver patients to be effective advocates. www.globalliver.org @globalliver
BIO-Wayne Eskridge, FattyLiver Foundation President and CEO
Wayne Eskridge, an electrical engineering graduate from the University of Idaho, worked in software and electronics through a 50-year professional career. He served in many technical and managerial roles beginning as a computer programmer, through multiple levels of technical and managerial positions in businesses of all sizes. He held executive positions in both public and private corporations with worldwide responsibilities, and from startups to Fortune 500firms.
In 2015Wayne was diagnosed with stage 4 NASH with cirrhosis. He had no symptoms and didn’t know that his diet, typical of so many Americans, was unhealthy and damaging to his liver. As a result of his own experiences, he became aware of the acute need for educational resources for patients. While there is currently no medical treatment for NAFLD/NASH, lifestyle changes can be effective. Wayne believes that prevention through education is the only practical solution today. BIOS:

Donna R. Donna is a graduate of Harvard-Radcliffe Colleges and Georgetown University Law Center.

GLI convenes the NASH Council, Liver Cancers Council, International NASH Day(TM),and the Advanced Advocacy Academy, equipping liver patients to be effective advocates.

Wayne Eskridge, Fatty Liver Foundation President and CEO

Wayne Eskridge, an electrical engineering graduate from the University of Idaho, worked in software and electronics through a 50-year professional career. He served in many technical and managerial roles beginning as a computer programmer, through multiple levels of technical and managerial positions in businesses of all sizes. He held executive positions in both public and private corporations with worldwide responsibilities, and from startups to Fortune 500 firms.

In 2015 Wayne was diagnosed with stage 4 NASH with cirrhosis. He had no symptoms and didn’t know that his diet, typical of so many Americans, was unhealthy and damaging to his liver. As a result of his own experiences, he became aware of an acute need for educational resources for patients. While there is currently no medical treatment for NAFLD/NASH, lifestyle changes can be effective. Wayne believes that prevention through education is the only practical solution today. His desire to help others avoid his experiences led him to the decision to become a patient champion and to create the Fatty Liver Foundation.
