One of the most common complications associated with diabetes is neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy of the feet (DPN), more commonly referred to as diabetic nerve pain. 2

http://nervepainandme.com/CONTEST

There are at least 5 million Americans in the US that suffer from painful DPN and 2.5 million (i.e., 50%) have unresolved pain despite first line treatments.

The symptoms associated with this nerve damage may be painful and include numbness, tingling, as well as burning, shooting or stabbing sensations that most often affect the extremities.3 Not all DPN is painful and many times the early symptoms start with numbness, pins and needles.

DPN is progressive and often starts with some tingles here and there – then it intensifies. As patients begin to lose important sensory information, they gain disruptive (and chronic) sensations like burning, pins and needles.

It is a progressive and debilitating complication of diabetes that was predicted to affect approximately more than 5 million Americans in 2021 and is expected to double by 2030.4-8

Some symptoms have been described by patients as:

Tingling: I feel “pins and needles” in my feet.9

Pain: I have burning, stabbing or shooting pains in my feet.9

Increased Senstivity: My feet are very sensitive to touch. For example, sometimes it hurts to have the bed covers touch my feet.9

Numbness or Weakness: I can’t feel my feet when I’m walking.

In recent years, the lack of effective, innovative treatment options have left many patients with a significant unmet medical need. While opioids have often been prescribed for the treatment of DPN, this treatment comes with risks and there is no substantial evidence that they are effective long term.

In February 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new draft guidance for clinicians who are prescribing opioids for outpatients with acute, subacute, or chronic pain.

The high use of opioids in people with painful diabetic neuropathy occurs despite the 2017 American Diabetes Acadamy position statement for DPN states that opioids, given safety concerns, are not recommended for use as first- or second-line agents. In addition, the recent 2021 American Academy of Neurology guidelines do not recommend the use of opioids for PDPN.

Now a new education campaign is underway which asks patients who are living with painful DPN and remain dissatisfied with treatment options to submit a short mnemonic acronym to help fellow patients experiencing painful DPN identify ways to describe their symptoms to healthcare providers.

The winning mnemonic will be included in a painful diabetic neuropathy toolkit and released for patients to help support empowered conversations with healthcare providers about solutions to symptoms and available/potential treatment options.

Kathy Sapp, CEO of the American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA), a foundation offering peer support and education in pain management and David Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD USC Schaeffer Center, to discuss the need to increase awareness and recognition of painful DPN symptoms. They will also talk about building confidence to talk to your healthcare provider, being an empowered advocate for your treatment options and discuss the new education campaign.

Azure will be joined by Board-Certified Neurologist and world-renowned MS Specialist Dr. Mitzi Joi Williams, who is an advocate for living well with MS, especially for Black Americans, who may be more at risk for MS than previously thought.

Azure was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) at age 28. In her early twenties, she began having spasms, tingling in her hands and feet, and had trouble walking. She felt so tired that it was difficult to stay awake, to watch a movie or drive a car, even after sleeping for 16 hours some nights.

The fatigue experienced by MS patients is much different from an everyday tired feeling, and it can come on with no warning. Managing MS fatigue is an ongoing challenge because it isn’t a one-size-fits-all symptom.

Just ask Dr. Williams, who partners with patients to create personalized treatment plans for their distinctive MS experiences, including:
 Feeling excessively tired or weary
 Having trouble with memory or mental focus
 Experiencing muscle weakness or trouble with coordination

In a public service announcement (PSA) launching in February, Azure encourages Black Americans living with MS to pay attention to their symptoms and advocate for their health. She also shares her first-hand experience as a Black woman living well with MS in a documentary alongside Dr. Williams, who explains what symptoms to watch out for and advice on staying active while managing often overwhelming MS symptoms.

MS is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks itself, making it difficult for the brain to communicate with the rest of the body.2 Approximately one million adults live with MS in the U.S., a majority of whom are diagnosed with RRMS. Women are three times more likely than men to develop RRMS, and Black Americans have an increased risk of developing progressive symptoms.2

Azure and Dr. Williams discuss the upcoming PSA and documentary launch – in time for Black History Month in February and MS Awareness Month in March – and More to MS, an educational resource to help patients and their caregivers learn more about and better manage MS symptoms like fatigue.

Find Out More About this Condition. Capsian Patch, … can be considered. a specific approved product is Qutinza
More than 34 million Americans – just over 1 in 10 – have diabetes1, and neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy of the feet, or more commonly referred to as diabetic nerve pain, is one of its most common complications.2
The painful symptoms associated with this nerve damage include numbness, tingling, as well as shooting or stabbing sensations that most often affect the lower extremities.3
Itis a progressive and debilitating complication of diabetes that will affect approximately more than 5 million Americans in 20204 and is expected to double by 2030.5
Joining us now to discuss neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy – or diabetic nerve pain – and this newly approved treatment option is Dr. David Simpson, Professor of Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.
Key Facts and Figures:
• The lack of effective, innovative treatment options has left many patients with a significant unmet medical need.
• The condition is more common in patients with type 2 diabetes and increases with age and duration of disease.
Hoping you might help us get the word out about by poreviewing or covering this:

Imagine waking up each morning to drum and dance in one of the world’s primary cradles of rhythm, amongst the world’s prime practitioners of Body Music. Then translating traditional rhythms to the conspicuous sounds of palms, fingers, legs, feet, torso, voice – exploring the confluence of Ghanaian and Body Music traditions in an uncharted cross-cultural language. Throw in market days, village excursions, intercultural exchange, and the 10th International Body Music Festival (IBMF) in Dzodze, Ghana – 6-16 July 2018 will be your unforgettable Body Music Adventure.

Body Music – clapping, snapping, stepping and vocalizing – is an amalgam of composition and choreography, music you can see, dance you can hear. Humans basically have the same instrument, yet they express music on it so differently culture to culture. There is an intimacy, a primacy, of the connection people have when you use your body as the sole instrument. It’s both personal and universal.

While Ghana is “a hotbed of percussive innovation and world rhythm,” IBMF founder and Artistic Director Keith Terry explains, “historically, there has been very little Body Music in their music traditions. There is a potential for the rhythmic language that is everywhere in Western Africa – not, as yet, translated into Body Music – to be explored and articulated in new ways, and the interchange is very exciting. Our partner, Dr. Kofi Gbolonyo, an ethnomusicology professor and Dzodze native, invited the IBMF to his village for this reason.”

Co-produced by Crosspulse and Dr. Kofi Gbolonyo and the Nunya Music Academy, the 10th IBMF consists of TEN days of concerts, workshops and cultural exchange with some of the world’s finest contemporary and traditional Body Musicians, plus intensive workshops in Ghanaian drumming and dance. No prior experience in either art form required, but rampant curiosity expected.

This year’s IBMF will feature Ghanaian artists, plus international Body Music artists from the US, Brazil, France, Israel, Columbia, Austria and South Africa — in concerts, workshops, cross-cultural collaborations, jam sessions, and more. The IBMF offers a unique musical and cultural immersion opportunity for international participants to experience and engage with Ghana while embodying its rhythms in diverse ways.

“This is not a luxury vacation, but rather a deep cultural, Body Music adventure,” says Terry. “Participants will be based in a Ghanaian village for most of it, then in Accra, interacting with cultural and musical institutions there through exchanges, workshops, and nightlife. Mornings will be spent studying music and dance, and in the afternoons, students will learn to translate that learning into Body Music. Trips to other villages to see ceremonies, workshops, and performances will provide the international participants with additional opportunities to experience the roots of Ghanaian culture.”

The International Body Music Festival is both a culmination of Crosspulse’s 40 years developing Body Music as a communicative performance art and educational model; and a jumping off place for a powerful forum of cross-cultural rhythmic performance and community development.

Over the course of its nine previous incarnations, the International Body Music Festival has become a meeting ground for both students and teachers of the various styles of global Body Music. Since 2008, the IBMF has been hosted around the world, from Brazil to Turkey to Indonesia to Paris, though every few years it returns to its home base in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Festival is a moving hub for performers who engage with humanity’s first instrument: the body itself. The shushing of palms, the snapping of fingers, the stomping of feet, and the seemingly infinite potential of the throat and mouth have inspired people worldwide to create moving music, audible dance. Tap, stepping, hambone, flamenco, beatbox, every style that forefronts the sounds of bodies in motion. It’s the oldest music on the planet, and it’s brand new.

Now, a full 40 years since he first coined the term “Body Music” back in 1978, Terry says this will be the final full-scale festival he will produce, preferring to concentrate on professional training and IBMF MiniFests after Ghana.

In honor of this decade-long benchmark, the Percuaction Global Percussion Network plans to honor Terry’s contributions to the field by presenting him with The Percuaction Lifetime Achievement Award during the time of the festival in Ghana, which adds a special value and significance to this year’s program

The Percuaction Lifetime Achievement Award is presented on an annual basis and is the organization’s highest recognition. Since 2012, the prize has acknowledged the life-time missions and achievements of percussive luminaries who have supported Percuaction’s vision of a global rhythm community.

But despite Terry’s impending departure from producing IBMF in upcoming years, he’s not at all worried about the future of the Body Music movement.

“The community will continue to grow, and there are so many places that are interested in hosting IBMF MiniFests in their communities,” he says, “Each new year, I marvel at the quality of the students and the state of the art form. You can see there are lots of embers sparking and we’re leaving Body Music in good hands with the younger generation…I can take a step back. As has happened in past IBMF locations like Bali, Brazil, Turkey, when the young generation experiences Body Music for the first time, then you go back a year later and see it everywhere. I’m really excited by this. It’s happening. It’s moving!”
