During National Women’s History Month in March, the Army Reserve joins the nation to celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of women.

Women’s History Month stands as a reminder of the strength the Army Reserve has as a diverse all-volunteer force.

Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Raquel A. DiDomenico will share how she became the first female First Sergeant of a Combat Engineer Company in 2015, before combat-designated units were opened to women. DiDomenico will also highlight the achievements of other women in the military.

Of the many accomplished women within the Army Reserve, perhaps the most noteworthy example to date is Lieutenant General (LTG) Jody J. Daniels the Chief of Army Reserve and Commanding General, U.S. Army Reserve Command, the first woman to lead the Army Reserve and the first female commander of any Army component. In this role, LTG Daniels is paving the way for the next generation of female Army Reserve leaders.

Army Reserve diversity is about understanding the value individuals bring and optimizing what they offer to build high-performing and cohesive teams. The Army Reserve is stronger because of this diversity.

The Army story isn’t complete without the historic achievements of women Soldiers and Civilians, who have played a major role in defense of our Nation since the Revolutionary War. Women of every race, class and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our Army.

To continue this story, the Army Reserve provides leadership opportunities to all Soldiers to enable them to thrive in their careers and build successful lives:
• Since 2016, the Army has trained more than 3,200 women Soldiers into Infantry, Armor and Field Artillery Occupations
• 36% of the Department of the Army Civilian Workforce are Women
• 95 Women Have Graduated Ranger School since 2015

The true story of Niloofar Rahmani and her determination to become Afghanistan’s first female air force pilot
In 2010, for the first time since the Soviets, Afghanistan allowed women to join the armed forces, and Niloofar entered Afghanistan’s military academy.
Niloofar had to break through social barriers to demonstrate confidence, leadership, and decisiveness—essential qualities for a combat pilot. Niloofar performed the first solo flight of her class—ahead of all her male classmates—and in 2013 became Afghanistan’s first female fixed-wing air force pilot.
The US State Department honored Niloofar with the International Women of Courage Award and brought her to the United States to meet Michelle Obama and fly with the US Navy’s Blue Angels. But when she returned to Kabul, the danger to her and her family had increased significantly.
Rahmani and her family are portraits of the resiliency of refugees and the accomplishments they can reach when afforded opportunities.

About the Authors:
Niloofar Rahmani became the first female fixed-wing pilot for the Afghan Air Force in 2012. She speaks three languages and has been interviewed for the Wall Street Journal, Japan Times, and The Independent as well as CNN and PBS. In 2015 the US State Department presented Rahmani with the International Women of Courage Award. She lives in the southeastern United States.

Adam Sikes, who writes under the pen name R.D. Sykes, was born in northern California but grew up in Massachusetts and Illinois. He attended Georgetown University, earning a BS in International Affairs and then a Masters in History. Adam spent the first ten years of his professional career in the US Marine Corps in infantry and reconnaissance units, serving numerous combat tours of duty in Bosnia, Iraq, and elsewhere in the Middle East. He was decorated for valor on multiple occasions and is the recipient of the Silver Star. Adam also served in Moscow, Russia, and various assignments in Western Europe. Adam was then approached and recruited to work at the CIA as a paramilitary officer in the Directorate of Operations. During his tenure at the CIA, Adam conducted intelligence operations in Central Asia, East Africa, and Europe. He was also involved in sensitive counterintelligence investigations, working with US law enforcement. After twenty-five years of service in the national security arena living and working around the world, Adam is now considering a move, not only from his home base in Virginia but into a new career as well.

Haley Johnson is a First Lieutenant currently stationed at Fort Benning, GA assigned to 14th CSH working on the Mother-Baby Unit at Martin Army Community Hospital. Her first duty assignment was Joint Base San Antonio where she worked at the hospital’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit prior to her compassionate reassignment to Fort Benning in 2019. She is a first generation college student and attended Kennesaw State University in Georgia on a national ROTC scholarship in 2012. During her ROTC career she attended Airborne school and competed on the Georgia Tech’s Ranger Challenge Team. She graduated with her nursing degree and started active duty December of 2016. She has competed in many fitness and physique sport competitions over the years and most recently competed on season two of NBC’s “The Titan Games”. The televised fitness competition series is hosted by The Rock and this season premiered May 25, 2020. 1LT Johnson appears on four consecutive episodes, 9,10,11, and 12. It was at the casting for this show that she met her now husband and they both welcomed a new baby into their lives this year.

Festivities surrounding the Super Bowl will focus the nation’s attention on Atlanta next week, but another event in the ATL that will get plenty interest is the She’s Next Empowered by Visa Initiative to help women entrepreneurs. The NFL’s has made a concerted effort to encourage female fans and improve the league’s image in recent years. That’s why the new SHE’S NEXT, Empowered by Visa is announcing a new global initiative in Atlanta to help women entrepreneurs. It’s hoped that having this important event in Atlanta it will draw more attention to challenges facing women entrepreneurs.

Even with this success, a new survey by Visa shows nearly three-quarters of women (73%) report it was difficult to obtain the funding they needed to start their own business. In fact, six in ten (61%) self-fund their business. That’s why the new SHE’S NEXT, Empowered by Visa program is announcing a new global initiative to help women entrepreneurs. The last World’s Fair was hosted in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in 1965 and was themed “Peace Through Understanding.” Millions of visitors attended the fair to explore the countries that were represented from around the world.

Now, more than 50 years later, Schneps Communications will be reimagining one of the most iconic fairs by hosting “The World’s Fare” at CitiField. Over 100 vendors will come together in New York City’s most diverse borough and unite through authentic food, drink and music curated by the city’s leading culinary advocates. The World’s Fare will be a grand celebration, advocating equality & diversity in the food industry, and promoting incredible male and female talent that make New York City’s food scene so unique.

The World’s Fare has formed a culinary committee co-chaired by renowned Danish chef Claus Meyer, American author, journalist and culinary historian Doctor Jessica B. Harris and Singapore based KF Seetoh who is the creator and curator of The World Street Food Congress. Meyer, Harris and Seetoh will champion and support chefs, restaurants, street food vendors and food businesses participating in the event.

The World’s Fare will be hosted Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29, in the parking lot of iconic Citi Field, home of the New York Mets. The ballpark is centrally located in New York City, near the 7 line and a short distance from Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The location is intended to bring back memories of the World’s Fairs of the past, by being in the shadow of the landmarks and structures that were built around them, including the Unisphere and the New York State Pavilion.

In addition to the food and drink offerings, throughout the weekend live music will be performed by bands representing about a dozen cultures as well as a SUMO demonstration from World Champions, art installations including Lego art, 4 dimensional drawings, street art and painted scripture.

Claus Meyer is a culinary entrepreneur, food activist, cookbook author, professor and TV host. He is the founder of the New Nordic Cuisine movement. Meyer owns and operates Great Northern Food Hall and Michelin-starred Agern, both in the Vanderbilt Hall of Grand Central Terminal. He is also co-owner of Norman in Greenpoint, Brooklyn with Swedish chef Fredrik Berselius. He is also the founder of The Melting Pot Foundation, which operates as a nonprofit in Denmark, Bolivia and Brownsville, Brooklyn.

Doctor Jessica B. Harris is an American culinary historian, cookbook author and journalist. According to Heritage Radio Network, there’s perhaps no greater expert on the food and foodways of the African Diaspora. She is the author of twelve critically acclaimed cookbooks documenting the foods and foodways of the African Diaspora including Iron Pots and Wooden Spoons: Africa’s Gifts to New World Cooking, Sky Juice and Flying Fish Traditional Caribbean Cooking, The Welcome Table: African-American Heritage Cooking, The Africa Cookbook: Tastes of a Continent, Beyond Gumbo: Creole Fusion Food from the Atlantic Rim. Harris also conceptualized and organized The Black Family Reunion Cook Book. Her book, High on the
Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America, was the International Association for Culinary Professionals 2012 prize winner for culinary history. Her most recent book is My Soul Looks Back: A Memoir.

K.F. Seetoh is a prominent food consultant, photographer, writer and cable television host based in Singapore. He is best known for creating the popular hawker food guide and street food halls, Makansutra and is the creator and curator of The World Street Food Congress. He was also tapped as consultant to Anthony Bourdain, who was working to develop an international market on Manhattan’s West Side.

Liza de Guia is the Founder and Chief Storyteller of food. curated., which is an award-winning long form food documentary series launched in 2009. Liza has earned prestigious awards including a 2015 James Beard Foundation Award for Best Video Blog, a 2015 Saveur Magazine Award for Editor’s Choice: Best Use of Video, 5 James Beard Award Nominations from 2010-2015, a 2012 Webby Award for Online Film & Video: Documentary Series, a Taste Award for Best Organic or Green Program, a 2010 & 2011 Village Voice Award for food storytelling and Filmmaker of the Year at the 2012 NYC Food Film Festival.
