Aftermath of Hurricane Ida prompts Metro-North shutdown, rail lines and stations under water

Metro-North Railroad won’t be running trains Thursday while workers deal with flooded stations and rail lines, submerged rail crossings and parking lots under water throughout the Lower Hudson Valley.

“Metro-North is basically out of business today,” MTA chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said during an interview on Fox 5 Good Day New York on Thursday morning.

Subway service in New York City will remain limited while the MTA pumps water from stations flooded by massive amounts of rain delivered by the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

“The storm did a number on all of our infrastructure in the region, mass transit was no exception,” Lieber added.

Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Thursday morning.

Along the Harlem, Hudson and New Haven lines, rail lines were washed out, parking lots were flooded, and debris was tossed onto tracks. Rail crossings in some areas were under water.

Elsewhere, wooded embankments slipped into nearby waterways, taking rail lines with them. Trees that were uprooted fell onto tracks. And at the Hastings-on-Hudson station, sidewalk leading into the station was crumbled by floodwaters.

Lieber said the flooding overwhelmed the city’s ability to drain water away at higher levels of elevation.

“All those areas that were hit by Superstorm Sandy, the under-river tunnels, they’ve been made much more resilient and impervious to storms,” Lieber said. “But what we’re seeing now is these repetitive flash floods which are at higher ground, and as I said, the street level drainage system gets overwhelmed and then the water gets into the subway in mass quantities.”

Directions:
Ferries to Governors Island leave every half hour from 10 South Street in
Manhattan (near the SI Ferry) and from Brooklyn Bridge Park starting at
11:30am.
When you disembark you will walk straight and you’ll see Island Oyster at
the intersection of W Ferry Line Rd and Ferry Line Rd.
There are also many ferry attendants who are always quite helpful with
answering questions should you have any.
Tickets on the ferry are $2 per person, but are free for all IDNYC holders

Child Actor Max Page’s Mom, a Cardiologist & St. Jude Medical to Explain the Challenges Facing Families with Congenital Heart Problems
A new initiative by the non-profit Mended Little Hearts and St. Jude Medical will offer an important new resource for parents who need answers—and it’s being headlined by none other than the mother of “Little Darth Vader,” Jennifer Page. You may know her son Max from his appearances on the soap opera “The Young and the Restless” and from his well-known role as little Darth Vader in a Volkswagen Super Bowl commercial that has become a classic. Max was born with a congenital heart defect and received a St. Jude Medical pacemaker when he was 3 months old. At age 7, the child-actor had to have open-heart surgery because of his condition. The surgery replaced his pulmonary valve and repaired a hole in his heart. The valve should last another 10-15 years before it has to be replaced with noninvasive surgery. Now Jennifer is reaching out to other parents with the information they need.
In many cases, these kinds of problems in children aren’t properly diagnosed until it’s too late, as in the tragic cases you may have heard about high school athletes dying suddenly on the basketball court or football or soccer field. The new initiative will spread awareness with online resources from Mended Little Hearts and St. Jude Medical.
Page will provide the parent’s perspective and will be joined by a leading cardiologist and pediatric cardiac surgeon, Dr. David A. Ferry, on staff at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. In addition to doing heart surgery procedures at Children’s, Dr. Ferry is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. Jennifer and Dr. Ferry will provide background on the new online resource, as well as information on how your viewers can learn more. The mission of Mended Little Hearts is to empower families with support and education about congenital heart disease.
