Organizers for New York’s annual Benefit for the City’s homeless, Blank-Fest, have announced the date for this year’s show.  Blank-Fest XXVII is scheduled for Sunday, December 17 from Noon until Midnight at The Hudson House (134 Main Street) in Nyack.  Held annually in the NYC suburb, located 20 miles up the Hudson River from Manhattan, Nyack has been hailed as the perfect backdrop for this long-time event, which raises blankets as well as public awareness for the less fortunate.  Past events have featured major label artists like Michelle Shocked (Mercury), Patti Rothberg (EMI) as well as legendary indie and regional talent: Bobby Steele (Plan 9, Stiff Records), Joe D’Urso (SCR/Schoolhouse Records, Light Of Day Tour).  No lineup has been announced as of yet for this year’s show. The Benefit – which was held virtually during the height of the Covid pandemic in 2020 and 2021 – returned to a live stage last December without missing a step. Sources estimate that since its 1997 inception, Blank-Fest, along with its satellite shows and online efforts, has raised over 20,000 total donations – most of which are distributed directly, to those on the streets of New York, beginning on Christmas Eve.

The East Meets West Medicine Fest is happening this upcoming weekend, November 20-22, and it will be opening up its doors on Friday night for a FREE event at the New School with its keynote speakers, Allan Badiner, author of Zig Zag Zen, and Dr. Nikki Noce, star of FOX’s Utopia.  The talks will be followed by a reception with delicious herb infused juices, chais and teas sponsored by REBBL Tonic.

Allan Badiner is the editor of the first edition of Zig Zag Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics, as well as two other books of collected essays, Dharma Gaia: A Harvest in Buddhism and Ecology and Mindfulness in the Marketplace: Compassionate Responses to Consumerism. Allan is a contributing editor of Tricycle magazine, and serves on the board of directors of Rainforest Action Network, Threshold Foundation and Project CBD. He has been a student of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh for more than 25 years.

Description of talk:

It’s been almost 60 years since Life magazine published the article, “Seeking the Magic Mushroom,” by Gordon Wasson, which marks the very beginning of the psychedelic revolution. Psychedelics, considered a “phase” from the sixties, made illegal, and held to be without medical usefulness, are now being studied as potentially our most valuable medicines for a variety of ailments, including our alienation from, and destruction of the very systems on the planet that support life.  This talk will explore the various medicinal applications of psychedelics for modernity and how we can use them to effect change in the world

We will also be joined on Friday night by Dr. Nikki Noce, Yoga teacher and star of FOX’s Utopia.  Dr. Nikki is a medical doctor turned holistic practitioner and yoga instructor. After traveling the world and experiencing a wide array of healing modalities, Dr. Nikki realized her true call to healing is a mind, body, spirit approach health and happiness. Many people know her as #DrLove after her appearance on the FOX reality show Utopia. Dedicated to elevating consciousness in humanity, Dr. Nikki created The Initiation Course which empowers and inspires people to live their dreams. A New York native, she currently lives in the LA area, blogs at www.drnikkinoce.com, works with people across the country via Skype, and travels the world teaching retreats.  Dr. Nikki’s talk will lead you through her path from Doctor to Yogi and the influences that helped her along the way.

During the Saturday evening portion of the event, there will be workshops and talks alongside music, performances and much, much more.  This will be taking place at and is sponsored by The Open Center and we are happy to announce that this will now be taking place in partnership with The Junxion and Ecstatic Dance NYC.  There will be vendors, workshops, DJs, Visual Projections, Dancing, Art Spaces, Performances and more.

It will also feature a live musical performance by Ambient musical artist and Brian Eno Collaborator Laraaji that is not to be missed.

There will also be special elective intensives, including Plants and Poses, a class fusing herbalism and yoga together for a fall-inspired wellness kick, happening on Saturday morning from 10am-noon with Jenn Pici Faulk and Steph Zabel, as well as a very special Sound Meditation with Alexandre Tannous, world renowned sound therapist, from 5:30 to 8:30pm on Saturday at Hari NYC.
