A Robo-lution on the Strawberry Field Sustainable crop growing with fewer sources and without using chemical products is the future trend in agriculture. Robots play a crucial role in this scenario. But training, programming, controlling and maintaining robots can quickly become complex. And this is exactly where Siemens comes in. But first things first: strawberries. The path of a strawberry from the tiny seed in the greenhouse to the sweet fruit on the supermarket shelf is long and winding. It involves many steps and a lot of manual labor. Or rather it did. In their approach of revolutionizing strawberry harvesting with robotics Ráječek farm uses two types of robots to make farming strawberries easier and more sustainable: The Fravebot Scout for monitoring plant health and ripeness The Fravebot Harvestor for picking the fruit “Dividing work tasks between two robot types is beneficial in many aspects,” explains Vratislav Beneš, the chief constructor at Fravebot. “The Scouts, whose primary task is to monitor plants, move around the greenhouses faster, and if they were to do some other work simultaneously, it would delay them. It is the other way round – working robots work effectively in cases where they drive out only where they are needed.   The Fravebot Harvestor picking fresh fruit The digital farm On top of the robots a digital twin environment by NVIDIA is key on the Ráječek farm. It helps develop, simulate, and deploy an AI that is meant to be the robots brain. Thanks to their training using the digital twin of plants and fruits in the NVIDIA Omniverse the robots are able to detect diseases and pests is the real world. The interface between real and digital world comes from Siemens: the Siemens Xcelerator. As today’s simulation tools can also simulate physical laws (e.g., the weight of strawberries), the robot’s neural networks can be trained in advance without the need to move around the real environment. This approach significantly accelerates the robot development process and reduces costs. “I think that is the main path to follow: not to focus merely on the robotic part but also analytics and the user interface for plant growers,” emphasises Matěj Sklenář from the Sklenář family, who own the Ráječek farm. Thanks to a technology library robot programming and control is easier than ever eliminating the need to have two programming environments. Which means the combination between the real and the digital worlds is closer and simpler than ever.   Digital technology, real delight. Smart harvest on the horizon Robotic farmers offer a wide array of applications. Besides strawberries and tomatoes, robots can be used to grow and harvest other crop plants, but also ornamental plants, mainly of flowers whose appearance and integrity matter most. The only restriction is the need for a greenhouse infrastructure, i.e., tracks on which the robot moves. With the emergence and the proliferation we will see more and more farms make the most of the combination of data, AI, and robotics. The last World’s Fair was hosted in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in 1965 and was themed “Peace Through Understanding.” Millions of visitors attended the fair to explore the countries that were represented from around the world.

Now, more than 50 years later, Schneps Communications will be reimagining one of the most iconic fairs by hosting “The World’s Fare” at CitiField. Over 100 vendors will come together in New York City’s most diverse borough and unite through authentic food, drink and music curated by the city’s leading culinary advocates. The World’s Fare will be a grand celebration, advocating equality & diversity in the food industry, and promoting incredible male and female talent that make New York City’s food scene so unique.

The World’s Fare has formed a culinary committee co-chaired by renowned Danish chef Claus Meyer, American author, journalist and culinary historian Doctor Jessica B. Harris and Singapore based KF Seetoh who is the creator and curator of The World Street Food Congress. The location is intended to bring back memories of the World’s Fairs of the past, by being in the shadow of the landmarks and structures that were built around them, including the Unisphere and the New York State Pavilion.

One 27-year-old Syrian woman, identifiable as “G” made her way to the Israeli side of the border of the Golan Heights seeking medical care for her son who had been wounded in the fighting.

After the IDF treated her son, G wrote a letter of appreciation to Israel lamenting the “tragic situation in Syria” and expressing her yearning for peace and the prevention of further bloodshed.

“Syria was the most beautiful country of all Arab countries. We thought that Israel was our enemy, but we realized that it’s good to us. I want to thank the hospitals in Israel and the Israeli army for all its help to the … Syrian children,” she wrote.

While Israeli field hospitals have existed for years, an operation was launched in June 2016 by the 210th division of the Northern Command dubbed “Operation Good Neighbor” aimed at providing relief to civilians lacking any alternative, whose medical services and infrastructure have been almost entirely obliterated by the carnage.

Since 2011, around half a million Syrians have been killed in the civil war. Another two million have been wounded and some six million have been made homeless. (Article from Ynet News, October 9, 2017).

‘The Man in the Red Bandana’

Please excuse these ramblings of a proud, old father who lost one the
brightest lights in his life. This light was my dear, dear son, Welles
Remy Crowther, who at age 24 was killed when the South Tower of the
World Trade Center collapsed on him and so many other innocent victims
of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Welles was an equities
trader with Sandler-O’Neill and Partners working on the 104th floor of
WTC2. He was also a volunteer firefighter and member of Empire Hook &
Ladder Co. #1 in Upper Nyack, NY. Somehow he made his way to the 78th
floor Sky Lobby after the plane had impacted his building, and there
he found a group of people who were afraid to move. They had huddled
together and were waiting for the rescue workers to get to them. They
felt if they moved around they might fall through a hole in the floor
and be lost as the visibility was almost nil due to the dust and
smoke.. There were many injured people around them, screaming with
pain, unable to extract themselves from under the slabs of marble that
lined the hallways that had them trapped. My son, Welles, wearing a
red bandanna (which he always carried in his back pocket) to protect
himself from the dust and smoke, found them and told them that he knew
where the only open stairway was and if they could walk they should
get up now, help those whom they could, but that there were people
they could not help and that they had to go right away. His words as
quoted to us by some of the individuals who were there and survived
were “follow me, I know the way”. Welles made three trips from the
78th floor down to the 61st floor where the lights were still on and
the air was clearer. He told them to keep going down the stairs, but
he kept going back up to escort more people down. In all we have
confirmed three trips he made between the floors before he went all
the way down to the lobby. He was in the lobby ready to go back up
with a fire lieutenant and two other firefighters with the tools
necessary to lift some of the heavy debris in order to rescue more
victims. But the building did not stand and we lost our beautiful son
who cared more for others than for his own life.

There is so much more I could tell you about him, and you can read
about Welles at CrowtherTrust.org., a website for the Welles Remy
Crowther Charitable Trust, a charity we set up in his memory as a
memorial to a young man who saw his duty and did it. You can also

People tell us that we raised our son too well. I respond that he was
born with the software installed. The good Lord put Welles on this
earth knowing that he would have to call on him. Unfortunately, it was
just 24 years into so promising a life.

But, we started The Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust to bring
some good out of a terrible tragedy. Through it we have been able to
work with many other agencies by making grants and gifts to help young
people become exemplary adults, whether for educational, health
related, or recreational needs. Again, I refer you to our website to
find out more about the incredible work we have accomplished. And this
proud, old father thanks you for having read about a true civilian
