I’m a retired Captain of Public Health Service. I graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1968. After college, I served as a VISTA volunteer and lived in a low-income housing project in Honolulu, Hawaii, for two years. I applied to my draft board as a Conscientious Objector.

After several years, I received a Master’s Degree in Public Health at the University of Hawaii and married Carol Ing, who grew up in Hawaii. This year, we celebrated our 46th wedding anniversary. We have a 32-year-old daughter and a 28-year-old son. 

After graduating with my Master’s degree, I joined the Public Health Service. As a health educator, community organizer, and behavioral scientist, I worked for the Indian Health Service and the Centers for Disease Control. My wife and I lived and worked on the Fork Peck Indian Reservation, a home for the Sioux and Assiniboine Indians in eastern Montana.

After four years, we transferred to the Zuni Indian Reservation in western New Mexico, where we lived for three years. We moved to Albuquerque, where I served as Executive Director of HealthNet New Mexico, a statewide health promotion organization, and four years at the Headquarters of the Indian Health Service. 1992, I transferred to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and retired in 1999. I taught health for ten years as a college instructor.

As a health educator, I promoted fitness to prevent Type II diabetes and obesity. I was also an athlete, wrestling in high school and college and ten years in Freestyle and Greco-Roman. After completing 21 marathons, I qualified for the prestigious Boston Marathon. In 1989, I rode my bike 3400 miles across the country from Seattle, Washington, to Atlantic, New Jersey.

The H2F System is an Army-wide program used to improve and prepare Soldiers for the increasingly challenging environments and adversaries they face in this modern era. It includes five disciplines of physical and non-physical readiness such as:

 Physical: building strength, speed, endurance
 Sleep: supporting behaviors that provide optimal brain function
 Nutrition: recognizing optimum food/drink to meet physical and non-physical demands
 Mental: adapting successfully through adverse situations
 Spiritual: creating practices to build resilience in times of stress & hardship
The Double Eagle Fitness Challenge is a 12-week Army Reserve program that includes:
 Cardiovascular exercises
 Strength/resistant training
 High intensity interval training (HIIT)

The new system is designed to bring a cultural change to Soldiers’ perceptions of training for the demands of close combat while building agile, adaptable, and fit troops. Army Reserve Soldiers in various locations, with varying schedules, use the program’s templates as guideposts for their progression of Soldier Readiness.

Haley Johnson is a First Lieutenant currently stationed at Fort Benning, GA assigned to 14th CSH working on the Mother-Baby Unit at Martin Army Community Hospital. Her first duty assignment was Joint Base San Antonio where she worked at the hospital’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit prior to her compassionate reassignment to Fort Benning in 2019. She is a first generation college student and attended Kennesaw State University in Georgia on a national ROTC scholarship in 2012. During her ROTC career she attended Airborne school and competed on the Georgia Tech’s Ranger Challenge Team. She graduated with her nursing degree and started active duty December of 2016. She has competed in many fitness and physique sport competitions over the years and most recently competed on season two of NBC’s “The Titan Games”. The televised fitness competition series is hosted by The Rock and this season premiered May 25, 2020. 1LT Johnson appears on four consecutive episodes, 9,10,11, and 12. It was at the casting for this show that she met her now husband and they both welcomed a new baby into their lives this year.
