Each year from October to April, the United States experiences the same imminent threat – the flu season. With several circulating viruses including COVID-19, RSV and the flu, the holidays and family gatherings, it is imperative that people protect themselves and their loved ones from severe illness.

www.FindFluMist.com

So, what steps can you be taking?

Avoid people who are sick

Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing

Wash your hands

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

Disinfect frequently touched surfaces

Above all, the single best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend getting vaccinated every year against the flu, but did you know that there are several types of flu vaccines to choose from? Better yet, there is a needle-free nasal spray flu vaccine available to eligible patients 2-49 years of age.

Dr. Ravi Jhaveri, Division Head, Infectious Disease; Virginia H. Rogers Professor in Infectious Diseases and Professor of Pediatrics (Infectious Diseases), Northwestern University School of Medicine, will be available to discuss ways to prepare for this year’s flu season including the various types of flu vaccines available.

An expert shares how to prepare for this flu season and why getting both a flu shot and the new COVID-19 booster vaccine is safe.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, experts have been bracing themselves each winter for a “twindemic,” a surge in cases of both the flu and COVID-19 at the same time. The past two flu seasons did not end up being as severe, partly because more people were wearing masks, social distancing, and hand washing. But as restrictions continue to loosen, health experts are worried about a worse-than-usual flu season this winter.

In late April and early May, New York state already saw an unusual spike in influenza, which could be attributed to relaxing of masking and distancing. And Australia is nearing the end of its worst flu season in five years, which may be an indicator of what the United States might experience in coming months.
“The flu is nasty, and the best way to protect yourself is with the vaccine,” says Dr. Keith Roach, a general internist and an associate attending physician at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. “And with COVID-19 still out there, it is perfectly safe to get the flu shot and updated Omicron booster at the same time.”

Health Matters spoke to Dr. Roach about what to expect this flu season and the best time to get vaccinated.

What can we expect this flu season?
Many experts are predicting a severe flu season because there may be overall less population immunity due to the low flu seasons the last two years. We are not seeing a lot of people getting flu shots, which is another big red flag that this may be a bad year. These are good reasons for people to get flu shots.

I am concerned that the COVID-19 infections will skyrocket this winter as people get together and take fewer precautions. Because most people are vaccinated, I don’t expect nearly as many deaths and hospitalizations as there were in the last two years. But to protect yourself and loved ones, get your flu shot and COVID-19 boosters (when eligible) and continue to be cautious this winter. COVID-19 is still out there and flu may come roaring back.

Why is it so important to get vaccinated against the flu?
People seem to forget how serious the flu can be; it is potentially life-threatening. An average of 30,000 people die from influenza every year, and some of them are kids. That is why I urge everyone to get the flu vaccine. It is safe, effective, and it will protect you and your community from illness.

The flu shot is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older. On average, it is about 50% effective at preventing the flu, but importantly, for vaccinated people who do catch the flu, it will reduce the severity of illness and decrease the risk of hospitalization.

Is it safe to get the flu vaccine at the same time as a COVID-19 vaccine or booster?
Yes. We already give people multiple vaccines at the same time. Our bodies can certainly handle all of the antigens in these vaccines without any trouble. However, both vaccines can cause similar side effects, so if you had a bad reaction to either the flu shot or COVID-19 vaccine, your side effects could be more severe if you get them at the same time. If you have a history of bad reactions, you can separate the shots by a few days or a week.

“Many experts are predicting a severe flu season because there may be overall less population immunity due to the low flu seasons the last two years.”

— Dr. Keith Roach

Are some people more at risk of catching the flu?
I recommend the vaccine for nearly everyone, and especially for people who are more vulnerable to the flu — including children under 5, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. We are also particularly worried about patients with chronic diseases, such as pulmonary illnesses like severe asthma, or heart disease. These are the people who are most at risk for developing severe flu and ending up in the hospital. It is also important for people who are more likely to be exposed to the flu — like teachers, parents, day care workers, and health care workers — to be protected.

How about kids?
Now that children are back in school and families are gathering again, there is going to be more exposure to the flu. Kids are often how a virus gets into a household, because they are around other kids and more likely to catch it. So even if the adults may be being careful, this could be a big year for the flu because it’s going to be generated by kids who are going to come home and give it to their parents.

The vaccine will keep families and kids safe — especially multigenerational families.

When is the best time to get the flu vaccine?
The ideal time to get the flu shot is somewhere in the range of late September to end of November. And the absolute ideal is probably between mid-October and mid-November. That’s because in New York the flu season typically begins toward mid-to-late December. We know that the flu shot takes about two weeks for it to start working, so this way you’ll be well protected by the time flu season starts.

And a flu vaccine is necessary every year because it provides protection for only one season.

Where can you get the flu vaccine?
The vaccine is the same wherever you go, whether it’s a chain pharmacy, independent pharmacy, a health clinic, or your doctor’s office. For people who are over the age of 65 or especially vulnerable, we recommend the high dose — or adjuvanted — flu shot, which is a slightly higher dose and offers stronger protection. If you meet those criteria, we do prefer it.

I get a lot of people asking me, “If it’s only 40% or 50% effective, why should I bother with it?” And the answer is: Any protection is better than none. Before COVID-19, during flu season in January and February, sometimes half or more of the medical ICU was people with influenza-related pneumonia. Flu shots give you even more protection from bad complications of flu.

Last year, as the United States entered its third wave of COVID-19, lockdowns and mitigation techniques kept people distanced and helped prevent a severe flu season. As a result, according to a new survey, three in five Americans say they may delay or skip the flu shot this season.

Now amidst a different pandemic environment and laxed social distancing that has prompted influenza’s inevitable resurgence, annual vaccination remains the best way to protect ourselves and families.

http://familiesfightingflu.org/

Influenza vaccination is critical in helping to avoid a potential ‘twindemic’ and alleviate the burden on our healthcare system. According to the CDC, it is both safe and effective for a COVID-19 vaccine to be co-administered with a seasonal flu vaccine and may even improve the uptake of both vaccines/boosters.

Key Flu Facts:

Influenza vaccination prevents hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations each year and can alleviate the growing burden on our healthcare system

Flu vaccine is especially critical for protecting vulnerable populations, including young children, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions

Children under 18 years of age suffered nearly 52,500 flu-related hospitalizations and 434 deaths in 2019/20, which is why it’s critical for parents of children under 18 years of age to be vigilant about vaccination

Shelle Allen, President, Families Fighting Flu (a national, nonprofit, advocacy organization dedicated to protecting children, families, and communities against the flu) will be available to discuss the importance of flu vaccines and help families plan for it. Shelle has a personal connection to this issue. Her daughter, Madi Allen, was placed on life support when she was 12 years old as a result of influenza, and even had part of her left lung removed more than a decade later due to long-term effects.

Joining Shelle will be Gregg Sylvester, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Seqirus, a global leader in influenza prevention, which is partnering with Families Fight Flu, urging them to take a “Promise” to stay on track for flu vaccines.

HEAR HOW ONE COLLEGE STUDENT’S LIFE CHANGED FOREVER AFTER NEARLY DYING FROM A VACCINE-PREVENTABLE DISEASE

Dr. Len Friedland, practicing physician, vaccine researcher and Vice President and Director, Scientific Affairs and Public Health, Vaccines, GSK

Jamie Schanbaum, meningitis survivor, US Para-athlete and GSK spokesperson

BACKGROUND
It’s that time of the school year where teens and young adults are counting down the days to the holidays and a much-needed break from classes. In 2008, Jamie was a college freshman getting ready to complete her first semester and head home for the holidays when her life changed forever. In just 24 hours, she went from being a healthy college student to fighting for her life after contracting meningococcal disease, also known as meningitis. Jamie spent seven months in the hospital, ultimately losing both of her legs below the knees, and all of her fingers due to the disease. While many colleges require MenACWY vaccination, MenB vaccination has only been available since 2014, and most colleges still do not require it. She is sharing her story to ensure that parents are aware there are 2 different types of vaccines to help prevent meningitis – one for MenACWY, and one for MenB, , to help other families avoid her experience. During the pandemic, it’s more important than ever for parents to educate themselves and utilize the vaccines available to help protect their kids against vaccine-preventable diseases they may be at risk for, like meningitis.

DID YOU KNOW?
•	Meningitis is an uncommon, but serious illness that can cause life-threatening complications, or even death. Early symptoms of meningitis may be similar to those of the flu, but can progress quickly and can be fatal, sometimes within 24 hours. ,
•	Up to 1 in 5 meningitis survivors suffer long-term consequences, such as brain damage, amputations, hearing loss and nervous system problems. Among those who contract meningitis, 1 in 10 will die, despite treatment, sometimes in as little as 24 hours.7
•	Teens and young adults are at an increased risk for contracting meningitis because it can spread through certain common behaviors such as living in close quarters like college dorms, kissing, and sharing drinks, utensils, or smoking devices.4,
•	From 2011 through March 2019, meningitis B (MenB) caused all US college meningococcal outbreaks, which involved 13 campuses, 50 cases, and 2 deaths among an at-risk population of approximately 253,000 students.

VACCINATION IS STILL IMPORTANT
•	Even if your college-aged children are not attending in-person classes due to COVID-19 precautions, they may still be at risk for diseases like MenB.4
•	Your teen or young adult may have received MenACWY vaccination when they were younger, but most have not yet received MenB vaccination, which only became available in 2014. Recent CDC data show that still, only about 1 in 5 17-year-olds in the US received at least one dose of MenB vaccination in 2019.12
•	Winter break is a good time to schedule a wellness visit and talk to your child’s doctor about the two different types of vaccines to help prevent meningococcal disease – one for MenACWY and one for MenB.2,3

As COVID-19 Cases Continue to Increase in Many US States, Doctors Are Looking to Prepare
Families for What They Can Better Control – The Seasonal Flu

PrepareforFlu.com

While the number of people infected by the flu each year fluctuates based on a variety of factors such as virus strains and characteristics of the person being vaccinated, the CDC findings suggest that about 8% of the United States population contracts symptomatic flu illness every year. However, this flu season will be different than those of the past, as this year the US is also navigating the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many questions and anxieties remain surrounding the global pandemic, including when a vaccine will be available, whether a second wave is coming, or even when the first wave will end. Amid increased uncertainty, and as a result of the impacts of both the flu and COVID-19, doctors are actively preparing their communities to help stay protected and healthy.

This year, an important action that parents can take for their families is to talk to a healthcare provider about getting a flu vaccine. In fact, the CDC is encouraging flu vaccination for the upcoming season, now more than ever, to help reduce the burden on the healthcare system. While some people regularly get a flu vaccine, others do not. There are several vaccine options available, even for those who prefer a needle-free option. The CDC does not recommend one flu vaccine over another. It is important to speak to your healthcare provider to determine which vaccine is right for you and your loved ones.

Dr. Ravi Jhaveri, MD, Associate Division Head of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine will discuss how parents can prepare their families for this year’s flu season, while navigating alongside a global pandemic.

MISINFORMATION CAN BE SERIOUS INFECTIOUS DISEASES: Can You Separate Fact from Fiction? MISINFORMATION CAN BE SERIOUS There’s been a lot of discussion around the mysterious polio-like illness occurring throughout the country, conflicting sentiment around vaccination, and the recent severity of flu epidemics – which killed about 80k people in the US last year alone. Naturally, …

MISINFORMATION CAN BE SERIOUS
INFECTIOUS DISEASES:
Can You Separate Fact from Fiction?
MISINFORMATION CAN BE SERIOUS
There’s been a lot of discussion around the mysterious polio-like illness occurring throughout the country, conflicting sentiment around vaccination, and the recent severity of flu epidemics – which killed about 80k people in the US last year alone.
Naturally, it can be confusing to understand which infections are preventable, which diseases are treatable, which you may at risk for contracting, and what to do when symptoms occur. After all, a germ is a germ is a germ, right? Germs are dirty, they make you sick, and that’s the end of that. Well, that’s not quite true.
While viruses and bacteria can both cause infections or illness, they are quite different. With antibiotic resistance on the rise, it is more important than ever to know the facts. Dr.Teena Chopra separate fact from fiction when it comes to common infections, especially pneumonia, which is particularly relevant during flu season. Here is a sample of important facts and common misconceptions that can be discussed:
• Fiction: Infections are caused either by viruses only or bacteria only.
• Fact: Each year about 36,000 Americans, mostly in high risk groups such as the elderly, those with compromised immune systems, heart disease and diabetes reportedly die from flu complications such as pneumonia.
• Fiction: There is no way to tell if it’s a bacterial or viral infection
• Fact: Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections, and do not work against viruses.
• Fiction: Taking multiple, stronger antibiotics to treat a single infection is better than taking one stronger treatment.
• Fact: The FDA recently approved a new and effective treatment for bacterial pneumonia that was designed to overcome antibiotic resistance.
