Five days of hands-on STEAM fun, interactive demonstrations, and winter break adventures for families in Central New York

SYRACUSE, New York – (February 11, 2026) – Fun is in full swing at WonderWorks Destiny as the team gears up for their annual Science Week event, from February 16-20, 2026. Winter break is right around the corner for CNY schools, making it a great time for families and locals to check out WonderWorks and all it has to offer. The upside-down house helps keep the fun and learning going all throughout winter break and beyond. The schedule of events for the week includes:

Meteorology Monday on February 16, 2026 – Get blown away on Meteorology Monday from 1 pm to 3 pm to kick off Science Week. This day will be dedicated to learning more about wintery weather facts, trying DIY weather experiments, exploring natural phenomena and more.
Egg Drop on February 17, 2026 – Watch out below! Take part in WonderWorks’ annual Egg Drop Contest from noon until 2 pm to see if you’ve got what it takes. Participants will put their engineering skills to the test and attempt to prevent their egg from breaking as it hits the ground. Supplies will be provided and participation is free.
Destiny USA’s Winter Break Bash on February 18, 2026 – Swing by the WonderWorks table at Destiny USA’s Winter Break Bash, taking place from noon until 2 pm in the Canyon area of the mall (right below the Canyon Climb Ropes Course). The WonderWorks team will be helping attendees create dancing art through an electrifying science experiment, handing out Professor Wonder activity sheets, giving away special coupon offers, and more. This is a free event hosted by the mall and will feature lots more fun activities from other stores.
Color Me Curious on February 19, 2026 – The Science Week fun heads back inside WonderWorks on Thursday from 1 pm to 3 pm. With a stroke of genius, put the “A” back in STEAM! Guests can try their hand at creating pop art, watch a mesmerizing, colorful elephant toothpaste explosion, and more on this creative, hands-on day.
Animal Wonders with Rosamond Gifford Zoo on Feb 20, 2026 – Science Week will conclude with a special guest session from 1 pm to 3 pm that participants will not want to miss! Guaranteed to get guests up close and personal with animal biofacts, this event will examine animal tracks, pelts, skulls, teeth, and more. This session is held in partnership with Rosamond Gifford Zoo.

Monday, Thursday, and Friday’s Science Week sessions begin at 1 pm and cost only $5 to participate in, while Tuesday and Wednesday’s sessions begin at 12 pm and are free for all. My husband, Tom, and I have a series of hand signals that we use when we’re out together. When I shoot him a meaningful look and stroke my chin, that means “I have a piece of good gossip for you.” A discreet tug to my left earlobe means “time to go.” (Although, now that I’ve given it away, this gesture will be retired.)

Secret signals might sound like something from middle school. But they’re also fun.

When you’re an adult, playfulness may not always feel natural. But play helps you cope with stress and increases your life satisfaction. It also helps people in relationships feel closer. Playful behaviors like humor, banter or flirting can also remind you of the early days of your relationship, said John Kim and Vanessa Bennett, a therapist couple who wrote “It’s Not Me, It’s You.”

But playful relationships don’t always happen organically, said Roslyn Ashford, a licensed professional counselor in Mississippi. You have to invent or search for these moments of fun, she added. Here’s how.

Cultivate inside jokes.

Research has confirmed what we intuitively know: Humor is a key element of adult play. So look for small opportunities to add a little levity throughout the day, said Gaya Kodiyalam, a therapist in New York City.

You can cultivate your own lighthearted language, Kodiyalam said. She and her husband have so many nicknames for each other, she said, they rarely call each other by their given names.

They’ve also developed a series of funny rituals. The couple have a special morning hug they call a “waggle.”

These words and habits, “really do build intimacy,” she said.

Gags are another way to build in a bit of fun. For years, Tom and I had a running joke involving Baby Doll, a plastic infant our daughter had covered with magic marker tattoos. Over the years, Baby Doll had grown a grimy and sinister look.

So I would position Baby Doll in various poses — in the fridge, in the shower — to give Tom a scare. Immature, I know. But fun.

Send a silly text.

Dr. Ashford and her partner would text memes and emojis to each other for a laugh, she said.

I told Dr. Ashford that I sometimes try to find the most obscure emojis to send to Tom, without comment, like a lobster or a CD.

Or instead of texting in sentences, Dr. Ashford said, “you could speak only in emoji language,” and have your partner unravel your cryptic message.

A friend of mine texts his husband, who is frequently out of town for work, goofy pictures of their dog to make him laugh. Sometimes it’s a close-up photo of the dog huffing her food; other times he would draw on a jaunty hat or kerchief.

Plan a surprise date.

Kim and Bennett like to take turns devising a mystery date. One person does all the planning, “and all the other has to do is show up,” Kim said. Their dates have included rock climbing and renting a convertible for a scenic drive.

A good source of date ideas, Bennett said, is Airbnb Experiences, inventive activities led by local experts — many of which are not expensive.

The person being surprised should have an open mind and a good attitude, Bennett added. And if the date doesn’t go as planned, you have another inside joke, she said.

Kodiyalam encourages couples in her practice to think of activities that made them feel most alive when they were younger — and figure out how to do “an updated version of it.”

One couple she treated reminisced about scavenger hunts and obstacle courses, so Kodiyalam suggested they try tackling an escape room together. If you both loved to paint as children, you can try a “paint and sip” art class.

Make a game out of a mundane situation.

Add a little lightness to your day by looking for ways you can turn household tasks into a game, Kodiyalam said. You can have a contest to see who can make the most creative dish using ingredients you already have in the fridge or pantry, or who can tidy up an area in your house the fastest.

On a recent slog to the supermarket with Tom, I divided our shopping list and told him that whoever finished first would get a $5 scratch-off card. Lottery tickets don’t inspire the same greed in him that they do in me, but Tom loves a challenge. He raced through the supermarket aisles like a grim-faced action hero, winning the game.

Tom ended up giving the scratcher to me. I won $10. Which I then gave to him.

Sometimes you can go home again, which for The CW came in the form of The 91^st Hollywood Christmas Parade. It aired on the broadcast network Friday, December 15.

A Tinseltown staple for over nine decades, The Hollywood Christmas Parade, in simple terms, is an indelibly American tradition. More specifically, it is a celebration of life, which is synonymous with love and support, and fun and escape. It is a gathering of like-minded individuals, all co-existing within a celebratory and charitable community spirit. It is a reminder, via The CW and producer Associated Television International, that tradition still matters (even following a reported shift in viewer preference and behavior). And, The Hollywood Christmas Parade is another reason why the linear broadcast model can still be beneficial.

Based on the fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen, an additional 164,000 viewers tuned in versus the network’s week-ago time period average. That was an increase of a hefty 43 percent.

Historically…

The Hollywood Christmas parade began in 1928 under the name, The Santa Claus Lane Parade. Excluding 1942 to 1944, when World War II broke out, and during the pandemic in 2020, it has run every year. The parade was the idea of businessman Harry Blaine and the Hollywood Boulevard Association, and the plan at the inception was to draw more holiday season shoppers to the area, which was being promoted as the “world’s largest department store.”

The first Grand Marshal of The Hollywood Christmas Parade was veteran comedian Joe E. Brown in 1932.

In 1946, western star and singer Gene Autry was inspired to co-write the holiday classic Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane) after riding his horse in the parade where crowds of spectators chanted those very words.

In 1978, the annual event was renamed The Hollywood Christmas Parade, which coincided with a shift to its scheduling from Thanksgiving Eve to the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

This year, the emphasis of the parade was widened in focus to communities in celebration of the unsung heroes that have made a positive impact.

“We thought it was more important than ever to emphasize the community spirit,” said Laura McKenzie, who co-hosted with Dean Cain, Erik Estrada, former talk show host Montel Williams, and Elizabeth Stanton (World’s Funniest Animals).

“These are particularly trying times and we must stand together and honor all the people who have committed acts of bravery or self-sacrifice, but have not been celebrated or recognized,” noted McKenzie. “This parade truly defines a unified spirit and positive hope for the future. It is a time to come together and simply celebrate.”

Flash to the present, and the annual Hollywood Christmas Parade, which benefited the Marine Toys for Tots charity, took place on Sunday, November 26 and ran for three miles along Hollywood Boulevard, Orange Street, Vine Street, and Sunset Boulevard. This year, U.S. Army Col. Paris D. Davis had the honor of being the Grand Marshal for Hollywood Christmas Parade.

“I am honored and very grateful to be chosen as Grand Marshal of the Hollywood Christmas Parade,” said Col. Paris D. Davis in a statement. “I am especially pleased that this wonderful annual tradition raises awareness of the important work that Marine Toys for Tots are doing to bring gifts and holiday cheer to those less fortunate.”

On March 3, 2023, Col. Davis received the Medal of Honor for his actions on June, 18 1965 during the Vietnam War when he led a group of South Vietnamese forces and American soldiers during a nighttime raid and rescued several injured soldiers on the battlefield (while suffering several gunshot wounds himself). The Medal of Honor, created during Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, is our country’s highest military award, recognizing gallantry above and beyond the call of duty.

“The parade also brings goodwill to people from all walks of life throughout the world,” added Col. Davis. “It’s a good reminder about what America stands for, who we are, and all that we can accomplish when we come together.”

Marine Toys for Tots

Founded in 1947, Marine Toys for Tots delivers, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming “responsible, productive, and patriotic citizens.” It began as a charitable event in Los Angeles and, in 2022, raised a reported (and unprecedented) 24.4 million toys, books and games, among other items, to a reported 9.9 million children.

In recent years, Marine Toys for Tots has expanded to support children and families in need throughout the year.

“We have been with The Hollywood Christmas Parade for about a decade now, and it is extremely beneficial for us in exposing our brand and our mission,” said General James B. Laster, CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “The Toys for Tots program started in Christmas of 1947 when a group of reserve marines in Los Angeles got together and decided they wanted to do something to help economically disadvantaged children and their community. Many of those children were war orphans. When the word got out, it started spreading and by 1948 almost all reserve units had a similar program.”

In an interesting footnote, Bill Hendricks, who worked in the film industry, was the commander of the reserve unit that started Marine Toys for Tots. After he met the legendary Walt Disney and told him about the initiative behind the program, it was Disney who came up with the name Toys for Tots and the three little train cars in the logo.

There are two arms of the Marine Toys for Tots. The first is the Marine Core Reserves, who do the so-called “heavy lifting” during the holiday season. The second is the foundation that works year-round to oversee the logistics and the fundraising. Once General Laster took over the foundation in January 2020, the year-round literacy program was expanded to include the charity arm outside of just Christmas.

“Our new theme is a ‘year-round force for good,’ which includes a foster child program,” noted General Laster. “And The Hollywood Christmas Parade is a wonderful venue to educate and inform the American people and the public about what we do.”

An estimated 5,000 participants were in attendance for the annual parade festivities to witness a roster of celebrities, parade performers, bands, cars, colorful floats, equestrians, and larger-than-life character balloons. Among the celebrities and dignitaries at the parade were Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass; singer Dwight Yoakum; the pop group Aly & AJ; actors Brandon Routh, Ming-Na Wen, Denise Richards, Chris Kattan, Deidre Hall, Taytana Ali, Ernie Hudson, Andrew Walker and Craig Robinson; and singer and dancer Paula Abdul, who was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year Award.
