FUND PEDIATRIC CANCER RESEARCH

The 2nd annual Kids Cancel Cancer, benefiting the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF), will take place on Tuesday August 15^th, 2023 at The Clubhouse in East Hampton. In addition to raising crucial funds for pediatric cancer research, the event will be an entertaining evening of arcade games, miniature golf, great food, raffle prizes, and more.

“Unlike, other fundraising events put on by SWCRF, this one was created and is being organized by kids,” said Marion Waxman, who is spearheading the event. “Last year’s event raised more than $100,000 allowing SWCRF to support the work of two leading pediatric cancer investigators – one based at St. Jude’s Research Hospital and the other at Schneider Children’s Medical Center in Israel. We hope to exceed this inaugural amount in order to fund additional scientists next year.”

While pediatric cancer deaths have declined by 65 percent over the past few decades, cancer remains a leading cause of death for children and teenagers. In fact, it is estimated that 10,500 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed among children (birth to 14 years old) each year, and about 1,190 children will die from the disease. Additionally, a recent study published in Aging AND Cancer found that childhood cancer survivors experience serious health issues in adult life, much earlier than their counterparts who did not have cancer as a kid.

“This is why prioritizing research to develop new treatments for childhood cancer is so urgent,” said Mrs. Waxman.

to Host Beach Party Fundraiser

This summer The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) is proud to present SO FETCH, a beach party fundraiser hosted by Georgina Bloomberg, Katie McEntee, Kingsley Crawford, Nathania Nisonson, Merritt Piro, Elizabeth Shafiroff and Jessica Fontaine Swift.

On August 7th, 2021, from 7:00pm to 11:00pm the girls are calling all party animals to attend their first annual beach party where 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the shelter’s rescue program. Guests will arrive at 7:00pm to the Gin Lane beach located to the left of the historic Bathing Corporation. Dogs with shelter volunteers will greet party goers and enjoy a night at the beach and out of their kennels.

Guests can expect a night filled with cocktails and dancing on the beach to music by DJ Teal Camner. Wine provided by Winc, a tequila station serving up DOGaritas sponsored by Bottle Hampton, Tito’s at the bar while guests treat themselves to vegetarian appetizers catered by Seasons of Southampton. Dessert will be classic Hampton’s Tate’s chocolate chip cookies and cupcakes in a jar by Baked Cravings that party goers will eat around bonfire (smores included!).

Katie McEntee, director of Animal Relations at the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation runs the shelters rescue program. Every year she goes on rescue missions to help animals in need and bring them back to safely. “It means so much to me and to the animals we save. Without donations and fundraisers like SO FETCH our program would be nonexistent. Many times, these pets are suffering from medical conditions that require expensive surgeries and we are able to provide them thanks to our donors. Our Rescue Program is here to help those in times of desperation. We help local shelters on Long Island when they get overcrowded, or we head into the city to the boroughs Animal Care and Control centers. We rescue from shelters in the south such as Louisiana, Alabama, South Carolina, Florida and Texas. Dogs and cats are put on an at-risk list: at risk of losing their lives if another rescue or shelter does not “pull” or “rescue” them. It is a sad reality that pets are euthanized simply because there are too many of them and not enough homes. Shelters that are overcrowded are forced to euthanize a percentage of their population. They cannot support the number of pets brought to them on a daily basis. Due to the overpopulation of unwanted and abandoned pets, they are killed. According the ASPCA each year approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized in the United States. If I am to just save a couple of lives, it is worth it, but this is a problem that are a country we need to come together to fix. This cannot continue. The animals deserve better than this.”

The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that relies on the generosity of their donors and volunteers to care to for the homeless animals in its community, and to place them in loving “forever homes.” The number of animals in need of help is growing every day. The overpopulation of pets on Long Island is a major issue. Whether caring for strays found wandering the streets, rescuing neglected and abandoned animals, or saving dogs from the horrors of the puppy mill industry, the shelter is a safe haven for all animals and for some, a last resort. Without SASF, these animals would not be able to survive. The shelter provides a steppingstone for animals to find a loving home. This past year, the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation found homes for over 800 animals and provided the community with necessary resources like their Wellness Clinic, Pet Food Pantry, Advo-Cats Program, low-cost spay/neuter mobile clinic, as well as other community outreach programs. These services help pet owners who fall on hard times keep their animals with them and out of the shelters.

BOSTON (March, 2020) — Fenway Community Center (FCC), an independent nonprofit neighborhood space, will hold its annual fundraiser “Love, Fenway,” at 6:30pm on March 19 at its address, 1282 Boylston Street. FCC’s mission is to serve as a gathering place to share information, deliver programs, and provide services that enrich the lives of all Fenway residents, while also exemplifying its values of collaboration, community, enrichment, equity, innovation, and sustainability. This is the center’s second yearly benefit to celebrate, support, and generate more awareness of its organization and the services it provides. It will include awards, live music, an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, a raffle, and a silent auction. Tickets for “Love, Fenway” are $75 and available via the FCC website or Eventbrite.

Last year, the fundraiser was a huge success, raising more than $25,000 for the Center. The attendance and participation demonstrated the passion of residents to contribute to their neighborhood and the organization’s influence within Fenway. FCC serves its neighborhood residents as its priority but welcomes surrounding communities as well. The Center is determined to hold a successful fundraiser to bring awareness and expand on their services. This year, with the sustained support of its members, friends, and sponsors, it hopes to continue building a more united community.

At “Love, Fenway” this March, Executive Director of FCC Robert Kordenbrock will present the 2020 Community Spirit Award to Brenda Clark, as well as honor the late Stephen Sorkin. Clark first came upon FCC in September 2018 and has been an active member since. She currently serves on multiple committees, including those for Programming and Health & Wellness for All. Sorkin moved to the area in 1978 to pursue his passion for teaching theatre. He taught his own “Acting is Believing” class and subsequent January 2019 performance at FCC, showcasing the community of diverse people and talents he cultivated.

Reflecting on the progress the nonprofit has made, Kordenbrock said, “we’ve experienced unprecedented growth since last year’s Love, Fenway as far as membership, attendance at FCC programs and events, and financial support from local businesses.” He added, “we have exciting plans in store for the rest of 2020 and can’t wait to share them with the Fenway community!”

Fenway Community Center at The Viridian is a 501(c)(3) organization established to provide a safe, vibrant, and inclusive neighborhood gathering space for Fenway and Audubon Circle residents and organizations; to provide multigenerational programming of benefit to the community; and to partner with local groups, colleges, universities, and institutions to provide creative and useful classes, exhibitions, and workshops in arts and culture, health and wellness, education and enrichment, and civic engagement. Sixth Annual chef-prepared Farm-To-Table Bannerman’s Island Annual end of Summer Fundraiser- Consortium chefs prepare a five course farm to table dinner (two seatings) in Helen Bannerman’s garden among the historic ruins of Bannerman’s Castle on Bannerman’s Island on Saturday September 12, 2015 with locally and regionally sourced ingredients.

Local Chefs’ Consortium consists of professional chefs from the Hudson River Valley, New York City, Albany and Massachusetts. “We met each other at various “foodie” events and recognized a common bond to each other – local food. It’s through our passion and commitment to the local food movement that we work together, spreading the joy of good food. It was at a Bannerman’s Island fundraiser five years ago that we decided to join forces with our respective talents to serve a five course meal to 50 people without running water and a kitchen. The dinner was a success and the collaborative synergy led the way for many new partnerships and special events. It’s our love of food, community, and fun that brings us to historic landmarks, farmers markets and remote locations throughout the New England area. Today events are scheduled throughout the year and always focus on educating local communities about local food. They include cooking demonstrations in school gardens, healthy cooking classes, farmers market demonstrations, and fundraisers with other like minded non-profits. One of the tricky questions we have faced as an organization is regional identification – defining the requirements for success by identifying our borders – both geographically and conceptually – without limiting our potential. A parallel challenge became our identity as chefs – to keep our founding chef identity as we decided to move forward as a non-profit organization, or to open the doors to members from all walks of life.
