Largest Student-Led Organization Tackles Food Waste to Feed Hungry Families at San Francisco’s Biggest Tailgate Party

San Francisco, CA – As excitement builds for the Big Game in Santa Clara, local tailgate parties are set to take center stage. Among the festivities, Food Recovery Network (FRN) sees these events as vital opportunities to combat hunger in our communities. At Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and FRN will work together to ensure that no surplus food goes to waste, benefiting families in need in the Bay Area.

For the third consecutive year, Hellmann’s is partnering with FRN—which has recovered surplus food from the Big Game for multiple years—to rescue high-quality food from Big Game tailgates and redirect it to communities in need.

“We’re proud to partner once again with Food Recovery Network to make food recovery part of the Big Game experience,” said Jessica Grigoriou, Senior Vice President of Condiments Marketing in North America, Unilever. “By rescuing high-quality surplus food from events like Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate and inspiring people to see the value in their own leftovers, we’re showing how small actions can add up to real impact—because good food should be enjoyed, not wasted.”

Last year, FRN achieved remarkable success during the Big Game, recovering 12,348 pounds of surplus food from two Hellmann’s-supported recovery events in one day, equating to approximately 10,290 meals that were provided to the New Orleans Mission. The recovery included high-value items such as seafood, chicken, and butter—essential ingredients that significantly impact local organizations fighting hunger.

This year, FRN is ready to make an even larger impact in the Bay Area. FRN staff, alongside dedicated students and alumni from the University of San Francisco, Cal Poly, San Francisco State University, and Case Western Reserve, will be on-site at Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate. All recovered food will be donated to the Delancey Street Foundation and Samaritan House, vital resources for people experiencing food insecurity in the area.

Regina Harmon, CEO of Food Recovery Network, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Hellmann’s has been unwavering in their support of our food recovery efforts over the past three years and in our mission to raise awareness about preventing food waste. Their partnership has been instrumental in our efforts to recover high-quality surplus food, enabling us to help local families experiencing hunger. Together, we are making a meaningful impact on both hunger and sustainability.”

FRN’s commitment to large-scale food recovery extends beyond the festivities of the football game. A recent partnership with Gaylord Hotels in Washington, D.C., and San Diego has resulted in over 100,000 pounds of food saved over the last few years. Ryan Verhulst, Hotel Manager at Gaylord National, stated, “Food recovery is essential to reaching our sustainability goals. As part of the Marriott family, we emphasize nurturing our world and reducing our environmental footprint. This includes decreasing our food waste and increasing our contribution to our community. Partnerships like the one we have with Food Recovery Network help us reach our goals while also giving back to local families in need.”

Food Recovery Network (FRN) is the largest student-led movement recovering surplus food and ending hunger in the U.S. We unite 8,000+ college students, food suppliers, farmers, and local businesses across the U.S. in the fight against climate change and hunger by recovering surplus food from across the supply chain and donating it to local nonprofit organizations that feed people experiencing hunger.

But play helps you cope with stress and increases your life satisfaction. It also helps people in relationships feel closer. Playful behaviors like humor, banter or flirting can also remind you of the early days of your relationship, said John Kim and Vanessa Bennett, a therapist couple who wrote “It’s Not Me, It’s You.”

But playful relationships don’t always happen organically, said Roslyn Ashford, a licensed professional counselor in Mississippi. You have to invent or search for these moments of fun, she added. Here’s how.

Cultivate inside jokes.

So look for small opportunities to add a little levity throughout the day, said Gaya Kodiyalam, a therapist in New York City.

They’ve also developed a series of funny rituals. The couple have a special morning hug they call a “waggle.”

These words and habits, “really do build intimacy,” she said.

For years, Tom and I had a running joke involving Baby Doll, a plastic infant our daughter had covered with magic marker tattoos. Over the years, Baby Doll had grown a grimy and sinister look.

So I would position Baby Doll in various poses — in the fridge, in the shower — to give Tom a scare. Immature, I know. But fun.

I told Dr. Ashford that I sometimes try to find the most obscure emojis to send to Tom, without comment, like a lobster or a CD.

One person does all the planning, “and all the other has to do is show up,” Kim said. Their dates have included rock climbing and renting a convertible for a scenic drive.

A good source of date ideas, Bennett said, is Airbnb Experiences, inventive activities led by local experts — many of which are not expensive.

The person being surprised should have an open mind and a good attitude, Bennett added. And if the date doesn’t go as planned, you have another inside joke, she said.

One couple she treated reminisced about scavenger hunts and obstacle courses, so Kodiyalam suggested they try tackling an escape room together. If you both loved to paint as children, you can try a “paint and sip” art class.

You can have a contest to see who can make the most creative dish using ingredients you already have in the fridge or pantry, or who can tidy up an area in your house the fastest.

On a recent slog to the supermarket with Tom, I divided our shopping list and told him that whoever finished first would get a $5 scratch-off card. Lottery tickets don’t inspire the same greed in him that they do in me, but Tom loves a challenge. He raced through the supermarket aisles like a grim-faced action hero, winning the game.

Tom ended up giving the scratcher to me. I won $10. Which I then gave to him.

***September is National Cholesterol Education Month***

Sometimes people must face the toughest opponents in life —and for approximately 30 million Americans with known heart disease, bad cholesterol is a formidable challenger. 1-3

Lowering bad cholesterol and keeping it low takes a solid game plan. With September marking the kick-off of the football season and National Cholesterol Education Month, it’s the perfect time for people to check in with their doctor to make sure they have all the right plays to manage their bad cholesterol.

The most common type of heart disease, called known heart disease, is caused by consistent high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL-C), fats and other substances in the blood, that leads to the buildup of plaque on the walls of the arteries.4 This buildup can lead to major cardiac events, like a heart attack or stroke, and blockages in the arteries causing chest pain.4 That’s why it’s important for people with known heart disease to lower bad cholesterol and keep it low; yet even with what may seem to be the best game plan, only 20 percent of people with known heart disease who take statins to lower their bad cholesterol achieve their recommended cholesterol goal.1

Tactics to defeat a tough opponent need to be constantly assessed and adjusted to help ensure success – and the same is true for managing bad cholesterol. While you can’t control factors like genetics or age, there are still ways you can find success with the right lifestyle modifications and working with your doctor the find the right treatment plan.

Dr. Boone, President, CEO, and Medical Director of the Boone Heart Institute to discuss what plays your viewers or listeners should incorporate into their game plan to help maintain their heart health this National Cholesterol Education Month and beyond. He will talk about the importance of cholesterol management, ways to lower it, and have details about a first of its kind treatment approved by the FDA to lower bad cholesterol.

Mahjong or mah-jongg (English pronunciation: /mɑːˈdʒɒŋ/ mah-JONG, Mandarin Chinese: [mǎ.tɕjâŋ]) is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. It is commonly played by four players (with some three-player variations found in parts of China, Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia). The game and its regional variants are widely played throughout Eastern and South-Eastern Asia and have also become popular in Western countries. The game has also been adapted into widespread online entertainment. Similar to the Western card game rummy, Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and luck. To distinguish it from mahjong solitaire, it is sometimes referred to as mahjong rummy.

The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols, although some regional variations may omit some tiles or add unique ones. In most variations, each player begins by receiving 13 tiles. In turn, players draw and discard tiles until they complete a legal hand using the 14th drawn tile to form four melds (or sets) and a pair (eye). A player can also win with a small class of special hands. While many variations of mahjong exist, most variations have some basic rules in common including how a piece is drawn and discarded, how a piece is robbed from another player, the use of suits (numbered tiles) and honors (winds and dragons), the basic kinds of melds allowed, how to deal the tiles and the order of play. Beyond these basic common rules, numerous regional variations exist which may have notably different criteria for legal melds and winning hands, radically different scoring systems, and even elaborate extra rules. A group of players may introduce their own house rules which can notably change the feel of the play.

In Chinese, the game was originally called 麻雀 (pinyin: máquè)—meaning sparrow—which is still used in some languages in southern China. It is said that the clacking of tiles during shuffling resembles the chattering of sparrows. It has also been suggested that the name came from an evolution of an earlier card game called Madiao from which mahjong tiles were adapted. Most Mandarin-speaking Chinese now call the game 麻將 (májiàng). Its name is similar in other languages, except in Thai, where it is called (phai nok krachok), a calque meaning “sparrow cards.”

Martina Navratilova was once asked, “How do you maintain your focus, physique, and sharp game even at the age of 43?”
She gave a humble reply, “The ball doesn’t know how old I am. You need to stop yourself from stopping yourself.
Every game in life is actually played on a 6-inch ground – the space between your two ears. We don’t live in bungalows, duplexes or flats. We live in our mind, which is an unlimited area. Life is great when things are sorted and uncluttered there. Keeping the mind messy with hatred growing on the table, regrets piling up in a corner, expectations boiling in the kitchen, secrets stuffed under the carpet and worries littered everywhere ruins this real home. The key factor to performing well in life and in every arena, is the ability to control the quality and quantity of your “internal dialogue”. Performance is potential minus internal interference.
Live in peace, not in pieces”.

1. NEVER GET UPSET – There is always another point, but if the game is over, then lose or win with dignity and good sportsmanship/sportswomanship respect

2. ONE POINT AT A TIME – Focus on the one point you are playing

3. KEEP THE BALL IN PLAY – Don’t miss, but don’t get upset if you do!

4. HITTING THE BALL Refer Oscar Wegner on You Tube, he has many videos. . https://youtu.be/AmPLkRxn0Ik

5. HIT BALLS DEEP – When you VOLLEY, try to hit three feet from the back baseline or 3 feet from the sidelines. Deep but in. When you SERVE also try to hit the back corners of the serving’s box with the first serve and then if not hit a safe second serve. . .

6. SERVING – Throw the ball high enough so when you swing, the ball is just starting to come down.

7. WEIGHT ON YOU’RE BODY – When you are waiting to return a ball immediately after you return a shot, try to get back to the middle of the court behind the back line. Move your weight from one side to the other side on your toes, sway. This prepares you to return the next ball.

8. BREATH – During the match remember your BREATH. Breathe in slowly for a count of 4 and out for the count of two, or whatever is comfortable for you.

9. ENJOY YOURSELF IT IS JUST A GAME FOR FUN.

Background of Paul Sladkus – Started playing at 7 years old by being a ball boy at Marymount Women’s College in Tarrytown, NY. A Nun showed him how to play, and then his mother’s also shared tennis teachings. Paul played fanatically during early years and at a summer TarryCrest Swimming Club and the Hackley Tennis Clay Courts…BTW Clay is very messy! A former Westchester County Tennis Champion at 13. However, only continued to play through high school, college and then hardly ever again. Paul loves the sport, attended many US Opens as he worked at CBS who owned the right to the US Open for years and plans to start teaching it. Paul has interviewed many of the World’s Tennis Greats over the years on his www.goodnewsbroadcast.com. Paul also took lessons from Warren McIntire who taught John McEnroe at the Point Washington Tennis Club. BTW Warren taught everyone Hatha Yoga as part of learning tennis. Tennis is as much an INNER GAME, AS AN OUTER GAME. Watch tennis and Enjoy Every Moment!

This group gathered together virtually to discuss some of the Good News in their lives. Everyone was on the same page with the mission to help others. Here is a little background on each, please look them up and join this Good News Groups outreach, as we plan to promote Operation Warrior Shield – Healing Their Hidden Wounds

Cindy is an international actress, a Lifetime Member of The Actors Studio (having studied under Mark Rydell, the late Martin Landau, Ellen Burstyn and Alec Baldwin.) She is a Chicago Second City Conservatory graduate (Nia Vardalos, Stephen Colbert). On TV, she was recently seen in UPtv’s holiday special “Beverly Hills Christmas” with Dean Cain.

DietrichPlay.com

Cindy is the owner of Angel Baker Productions. With her international, creative team she wrote, produced and starred in “Eternal Waltz”, a story about a soul connection through lifetimes (sponsored in part by the Johann Strauss Foundation of Germany). She and her cast won “Best Acting Ensemble-Short” in the Culver City Film Festival and screened in Amsterdam, Las Vegas as well as Woodstock, NY this summer. Eternalwaltzfilm.net

Cindy has had leading roles on stage since kindergarten, when she played her first queen, got her first laugh and fell in love with the stage. She has continued on the boards in Chicago, New York, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Berlin and Los Angeles, originating over thirteen roles in new plays.

Cindy is also a voice over artist. Her uniquely deep voice was personally chosen by Beyonce’s family to narrate her international half hour special for E! Entertainment.
Errol’s Mantra

You can make more money, but you can‘t make more time.

When you give someone your time, you are giving them a portion of your life.

Your time is your life.

That is why the greatest gift you can give someone is your time.
