A Message from the Comptroller   Budget season is in full swing and I just returned from Albany where I testified about the state of the City’s finances, the significant challenges we currently face, and the urgent need for greater investment in New York City through State funding. As you’ve likely heard, the City faces a multi-billion-dollar budget gap in the next two years. It’s not all doom and gloom, however; revenue is high and revised tax receipts are up this year. Still, New York remains a city of contradictions. The stock market is at an all-time high — the Dow above 50,000 for the first time ever — yet nearly 90,000 New Yorkers slept in our shelters last night. New York City is home to more billionaires than any other city in the world. And yet nearly one in four New Yorkers live in poverty. That’s 2 million people, including 420,000 children. And this month’s New York by the Numbers, our monthly economic snapshot, reflects that disconnect. While New York City’s office market has continued its steady and robust rebound in early 2026, job growth remains stagnant, with weekly jobless claims creeping upward in January and persistent hiring challenges for recent graduates which could further hamper future job growth. Rents continue to soar, which means shelter costs and the City’s contribution to rent subsidy programs are also rising. At the same time, New York City remains a preeminent destination with tourism numbers coming in stronger than last January and higher consumer confidence than the rest of the country. These contradictions are also evident in the City’s budget. With a fiscal gap not seen since the Great Recession, all options are on the table and a stronger partnership with Albany will be essential — after all, New York City sends far more money to the state than we receive in return; by one recent estimate, more than $20 billion. If we act now with clarity, urgency, and a real partnership with Albany, we can create a more resilient fiscal foundation, steel ourselves for the uncertainty ahead, and be a city and state that leaves no one behind. As always, we will continue to track these trends closely and share clear, data-driven insights to help New Yorkers understand what’s happening in our economy, and what it means for the City’s future. The vast majority of public companies are either retaining or ramping up their climate commitments, with companies found to be more than twice as likely to be increasing their emissions reduction goals than decelerating them, according to a new study released by professional services firm PwC, based on data from climate research provider and environmental disclosure platform CDP.

The study also found that the practice of setting climate goals is progressing down the value chain as companies increase engagement efforts, with smaller companies representing a growing proportion of those introducing new targets.

Almost 1 in 4 women (24%) reported that their financial wellness is worse today than two years ago, compared to only 17% of men who said the same, according to a recent survey.
The pandemic and resulting economic volatility have made women more aware of, and focused on, their short and long-term financial wellness. www.tiaa.org
Nearly 40% of women say they don’t not have anything saved for retirement. The TIAA survey showed glaring examples of how women face bigger challenges than men when it comes to both their short- and long-term financial futures:
• More women (25%) say they carry an “unmanageable level of debt” compared to 17% of men.
• More women (29%) struggle to pay monthly bills, including utilities, rent, loan payments and credit cards. For men, it was 19%.

Far fewer women (31%) are saving for retirement, compared to men (44%). And the pandemic has made matters worse, as nearly two million women have left the workforce since 2020. Women also retire about two years earlier than men, but typically live longer. The net result of all these factors is that women’s retirement savings and investments generate about 30% less income than men’s once they stop working, and women also face a greater risk of running out of money in retirement.
Women are behind in retirement planning and the gap between the financial wellness of men and women continues to widen. According to the survey:
 63% of women say they have any money saved toward retirement, compared to 80% of men.
 44% of men say they are currently saving towards retirement compared to 31% of women.
 35% of men are confident their retirement savings are on track to live comfortably throughout retirement without running out of money, compared to 19% of women.

Shelly-Ann Eweka, Senior Director of Advice Strategy at TIAA, discusses this latest survey results and why it’s important for employers to take the necessary steps toward empowering women to learn more about their financial wellness before they reach the age of retirement. Eweka will also outline how research shows that employers must take a tailored approach to support women improve their financial well being and close the retirement gap.

A New Study Reveals How to Fill a Vital Gap In Infant Gut Health
New research is showing that a specific probiotic bacteria is key to restoring a baby’s gut to its protective, natural state and providing a foundation for life-long optimal health.
When babies are born they begin to acquire a collection of bacteria called the microbiome –trillions of microorganisms that co-exist in our bodies and live all over us, on our skin, nose, mouth, eyes and gastrointestinal tract, or gut. Research shows that the infant gut microbiome plays a critical role in healthy immune and metabolic development, as well as meeting babies’ dietary needs.
The bacteria in a baby’s microbiome are passed down from their mom at birth. For generations, one strain called B. infantis dominated the infant gut. However, modern medical practices such as increased antibiotic use and C-sections have led to a microbial imbalance in the infant gut and a loss of this key bacteria. This imbalance has been associated with a range of chronic health issues including allergies, asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes and a host of immunological disorders.
Now, recently published data shows for the first time that supplementation with activated B. infantis can completely transform the gut environment in babies that are fed breast milk. Along with restoring a healthy gut microbiome, the study results show that the supplementation significantly reduced levels of potentially harmful bacteria linked to disease in infants born either through natural or C-section delivery.
Mark Underwood, M.D., Chief Pediatric Neonatologist at UC Davis discussed the study results and explain how the activated form of this beneficial bacteria can be helpful for babies and about other ways to encourage the health of infants.
