The first 50 days of 2025 have set a whirlwind pace as American Red Cross volunteers have responded to more big disasters than days so far this year — including record wildfires in southern California and devastating floods in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. This comes on the heels of 2024, which saw the second-highest number of billion-dollar disasters in a single year marked by extreme events like Hurricanes Helene and Milton.¹

In the face of these trends that have upended thousands of lives, Red Cross volunteers are now responding to nearly twice as many major disasters than a decade ago — and relying on generous donations to be able to deliver emergency shelter, food, relief supplies, financial assistance and more.

These major disasters are also taking a hidden toll on communities and exacerbating people’s long-term health problems. That’s why the Red Cross makes sure that people have access to basic health care and emotional support at emergency shelters after disasters. This can include helping to replace lost prescription medications and medical equipment.

What’s more, these massive events are on top of everyday crises like home fires and storms — which are just as devastating to the families suffering from them. All told, generous donations make it possible for Red Cross volunteers to respond every 8 minutes to help families in need across the country.

Anne McKeough, chief development officer, American Red Cross, will discuss these disaster trends and how donations fuel the organization’s response to help ensure no one faces a crisis alone. She’ll also talk about how people can get involved by giving donations to help people affected by disasters big and small.

1. Eureka Park Accessibility Contest Winners for CES 2025

We are thrilled to announce the CTA Foundation’s 2025 Eureka Park Accessibility Contest Winners!

This year, we are proud to support five incredible organizations that are using technology to improve the lives of older adults and people with disabilities. Our 2025 winners include Blueberry Technology, Lotus , Makesense Technology, Sign Speak, and Soliddd.

We are looking forward to seeing these startups’ innovations on the Eureka Park show floor at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada, this January.

2. CTA Foundation Accessibility Roundtable in Washington, D.C.

On October 1st, the CTA Foundation hosted an Accessibility Roundtable at Verizon’s Technology and Policy Center in Washington, D.C., to mark the start of Disability Employment Month.

The event featured insights from Assistant Secretary Taryn Williams and a panel of CTA Foundation and Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation grant recipients, discussing the future of accessibility in technology.

Thanks to our sponsors—Verizon, Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation, and Brunswick Corporation—and to everyone who attended and contributed to the conversation.

3. Save the date for #GivingTuesday on December 3rd

The CTA Foundation is once again asking the consumer technology community to help us turn the global day of generosity, #GivingTuesday, into a day that showcases technology’s ability to impact lives – making the day #GivingTechday.

Leading up to Giving Tuesday, share with us your story of how #TechGives. You will inspire others within our community by sharing your story on our social media channels (Facebook, X). Technology can make the world more accessible for all.
On Giving Tuesday, you can make it #GivingTechday with a donation to the CTA Foundation. CTA generously supports 100% of the Foundation’s overhead and administration costs. So, donations like yours 100% support our efforts to find and provide resources to nonprofits who can leverage technology to improve the lives of seniors and people with disabilities.

4. DEADLINE APPROACHING: Apply for the NEW Health Innovation Challenge

The CTA Foundation Health Innovation Challenge, thanks to a seed grant from the WITH Foundation, asks consumer technology companies to leverage their products to solve challenges faced by those with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) in accessing digital health care.

The challenge will conclude with an onsite event at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada and the Grand Prize winner will receive a $25,000 cash prize, while runner-up will receive $15,000, thanks to our prize sponsor, Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation.
Consumer technology companies that are already operating in the digital health tech space – of any size – are encouraged to apply for this competition.
We will ask them to engage with the IDD community focus group content created by our partners to create a new solution or modify an existing piece of technology to address a challenge identified by the IDD community.
