Selected projects will receive $500,000 in funding over three years, during which time, SWCRF along with MFCR, plan to invest up to $11 million into specific aging-cancer research.

Since, aging is the leading cause of cancer development and progression, as well as poses many treatment challenges, this area of research is crucial to combating the global rise in cancer incidence and improving outcomes for all cancer patients.

• Identifying actionable biomarkers that predict aging/cancer risk.
• Understanding how aging impacts tumor growth.
• Exploring the role of the aging immune system in cancer treatment.
• Investigating how metabolism and genetics contribute to cancer development.
• Studying how premature aging increases cancer risk for younger adults.

New Treatment for Liver Cancer Slows Progression and

Improves Survival

A recent study by SWCRF-investigator, Dr. Josep Llovet (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai), and colleagues has discovered a new treatment approach for unresectable,

non-metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)—a form of liver cancer that cannot be surgically removed and has not yet spread to other parts of the body. Around 45,000 cases of HCC are diagnosed yearly in the US and about 1M globally.

According to their research, published in The Lancet (January 2025), combining transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) with the drugs lenvatinib (a targeted therapy) and pembrolizumab (an immunotherapy) significantly improved patient outcomes compared to the placebo group.

Specifically, patients receiving this combination therapy experienced slower tumor progression and a trend towards overall higher survival rates. Additionally, the drug combination was well-tolerated, with manageable side effects, supporting its potential as a viable treatment option in patients with intermediate HCC.

This breakthrough would not have been possible without their continued support”, said Dr Josep M Llovet, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Liver Cancer Program at the Ichan School of Medicine.

This remarkable improvement marks the first clinical breakthrough in treating this challenging and often fatal form of cancer in more than 20 years.

Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children who are fighting life-threatening illnesses. The theory is that by granting the wish of a child who is very ill, that child feels a sense of empowerment – that they actually have some control over something in their lives when they have no control over their illnesses. That sense of empowerment and control helps drive children to seek the treatment they need and not lose hope.

GRANTS AWARDED TO THE JUNIOR JAZZ FOUNDATION AND SIX STRINGS HEROES AT JEFFERSON BARRACKS

 The Les Paul Foundation, whose mission is to honor and share the life, spirit and legacy of Les Paul by supporting music education, engineering and innovation as well as medical research, announced that it has awarded grants to the Junior Jazz Foundation, Litchfield Performing Arts and Six Strings Heroes at Jefferson Barracks, three different organizations but with a shared vision of the legacy of Les Paul. Throughout his life, Les Paul was an innovator who changed the face of the music industry with the inventions of multi-track recording and the solid body electric guitar.  He supported music education, engineering, innovation as well as medical research.

The Junior Jazz Foundation of Hilton Head, South Carolina will receive funding for its annual Junior Jazz Camp. With funding from the Les Paul Foundation, a permanent jazz guitar program will be added to the camp.  Students will learn about Les Paul and honor him by performing his music.  The camp will also hold annual Les Paul evenings at The Jazz Corner.

The Junior Jazz Foundation (JJF) is the philanthropic outreach effort of the Jazz Corner and under the umbrella of the prestigious Community Foundation of the Low Country, a quality organization with tremendous experience in managing the philanthropic work of individuals, families and businesses. Six String Heroes at Jefferson Barracks in O’Fallon, Missouri is also the recipient of a Les Paul Foundation grant and will receive funding to provide free guitar lessons and guitars to injured U.S. military veterans. Typical students have Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), amputations or traumatic brain injuries suffered during combat.

Playing the guitar helps with memory, physical dexterity and provides a positive social connection through music. Les Paul served in the U.S. military during World War II and often made time to visit injured veterans.  Six String Heroes at Jefferson Barracks is a non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and assist injured U.S. military veterans through free guitar lessons and guitars. The Litchfield Performing Arts of Litchfield, Connecticut will award need-based scholarships with the funding from the Les Paul Foundation. Students come from over half of the states in the United States and 20 foreign countries to attend the sessions. Nicki Parrott, a member of the Les Paul Trio will also offer a Master Class dedicated to Les Paul’s music and life, and give a public performance of Les’ music and arrangements during the camp’s sessions. Litchfield Performing Arts (LPA) is a charitable organization founded in 1981 whose mission is to change lives through the arts. LPA does this through various programs including the Litchfield Jazz Festival, Litchfield Jazz Camp and Project Poetry Live!’

Litchfield Jazz Fest is held annually the second weekend in August at the Goshen Fairgrounds in Goshen. The festival does not just offer top-notch jazz music, but is a true outdoor summer experience for the entire family. From a sell-out Opening Night party and three days of the best jazz, artists talks, children’s workshops, after parties, to a juried fine art and craft show and local foods. The Great American Teach-Off to recognize two extraordinary U.S. educators with $10,000 classroom grants to support their amazing efforts in the classroom

GOOD and University of Phoenix Honor America’s Most Innovative Teachers

LOS ANGELES, January 22, 2013 — GOOD and University of Phoenix today announced the launch of the Great American Teach-Off, a contest that will award two extraordinary teachers from grades K-12 with $10,000 classroom grants. Starting today, parents, students and community members can nominate innovative and inspiring teachers by visiting  www.good.is/GATO. The nomination period will end on Feb. 15,

2013, and 20 finalists will be chosen to compete for the $10,000 classroom grants. There will be 10 finalists from grades K-6 and 10 finalists from grades 7-12, and a grant recipient will be chosen from each category.

Past winners impacted their communities by engaging students in a hands-on sustainability project and facilitating private instruction for displaced students. The 2012 grant recipient was eighth grade teacher Daryl Bilandzija of Odyssey Charter School

in Altadena, Calif. He used the $10,000 grant to connect the inside of his classroom to an outdoor edible and sustainable garden and gave his students a hands-on learning environment.

2011 grant recipient Terry Dougherty, a third grade teacher at Roland Rogers Elementary School in Galloway Township, N.J., drew on her eacher, great, american, teach-off, teach, off, class, classroom, grants, efforts, good, phoenix, honor, innovative, teachers, school, children, childown experience being part of a military family. She recognized the hardships military children endure as they transfer state to state and experience curricula changes. Dougherty used her grant to develop “Military Child Tutoring – They Are Heroes Too!,” a free tutoring program for children of military families.

“Teachers play a critical role in shaping the futures of our nation’s children,” said Dr. Meredith Curley, Dean of the College of Education at University of Phoenix. “The

The $10,000 grants will directly support two K-12 classrooms, but will also impact other classrooms across the nation, serving as examples for educators to adopt for use with their own students.
