“On Burning Ground: A Son’s Memoir” (St. Martin’s Press/Macmillan) is a true narrative of radical masquerade: the story of how at the height of World War II a fair-haired rabbinical student assumed the identities of a Catholic and, more strategically, of a Muslim, to survive racial genocide. In effect, it is a journey to the end of night capturing the visceral danger and spiraling suspense of a young man alone in the world, bereft of any structure of support, outwitting his destiny.

This is a tale of a wartime chameleon, a man of multiple masks, who survived by ingenuity, daring, and deft maneuver. In a desperate gamble at life, a parochial student at one of Poland’s pre-eminent rabbinical academies used his many false “selves”–especially his assumed Muslim identity, which gave him cover for his circumcision–to fake his way into the belly of the beast, the dreaded Waffen-SS, the inner core of the Nazi killing machine, in order to survive certain death.

A story of total and terrifying self-reinvention, it demonstrates the multiple arts of passing: psychological daring, sartorial strategy (he had to look the part) and linguistic mastery (he had to sound the part) to stay alive. By necessity, it touches upon such issues as existential choice and dread, moral anguish and ambiguity, as well as the ever-tormenting question of means and ends, questions to animate intense educational, psychological and ethical discussion. After the war, Joseph Skakun returned to Judaism in a fog of anguish in Paris and then in New York, where he lived amid a supernova of memory and penance. Kudos to WXXI Public Broadcasting for airing “Asian Americans,” a five-part series to take us back in time from the 1800s to present. Knowing and learning history lessons will teach us to make better decisions today and for our future. Below is a description of each episode. We have partnered with WXXI to spotlight local Asian Americans from Rochester, New York. Please tune in and feel free to forward to your families, friends and networks!

Episode 1 – Breaking Ground

Monday 5/11 at 8 p.m.

In an era of exclusion and U.S. empire, new immigrants arrive from China, India, Japan, the Philippines and beyond. Barred by anti-Asian laws they become America’s first “undocumented immigrants,” yet build railroads that dazzle on the silver screen, and take their fight for equality to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Episode 2 – Question of Loyalty

Monday 5/11 at 9 p.m.

An American-born generation straddles their country of birth and their parents’ homelands in Japan and Korea. Those loyalties are tested during World War II, when families are imprisoned in detention camps, and brothers find themselves on opposite sides of the battle lines.

Episode 3 – Good Americans

Tuesday 5/12 at 8 p.m.

During the Cold War years, Asian Americans are simultaneously heralded as a Model Minority, and targeted as the perpetual foreigner. It is also a time of bold ambition, as Asian Americans aspire for the first time to national political office and a coming culture-quake simmers beneath the surface.

Episode 4 – Generation Rising

Tuesday 5/12 at 9 p.m.

During a time of war and social tumult, as young generation fights for equality in the fields, on campuses and in the culture, and claims a new identity: Asian Americans. The war’s aftermath brings new immigrants and refugees who expand the population and the definition of Asian America.

Episode 5 – Breaking Through

Tuesday 5/12 at 10 p.m.

At the turn of the new millennium, the national conversation turns to immigration, race, and economic disparity. As the U.S. becomes more diverse, yet more divided, a new generation of Asian Americans tackle the question, how do we as a nation move forward together?

His footballing prowess soon brought him to the attention of the Station Manager and Saville was selected for The Royal Air Force Football Team which played matches against amateur and semi-professional German teams throughout the region. A great English Patriot, Saville said of his experience in the Air Force, “It was two of the happiest years of my life.”
When he left the RAF, Saville joined the firm of Esbee Gold, a manufacturer of Woman’s Fashions. He serviced retail and wholesale customers the length and breadth of Great Britain. At the same time he was offered a professional trial at Tottenham Hotspur but never went and joined the senior amateur football club Wingate FC, where for 10 years he topped the scoring ranks averaging 20-30 goals a season. The Great Britain selectors duly noted his talent and he was selected for the 1961 Maccabiah Games in Israel. He was top scorer during the tournament and Britain won its only ever Gold Medal with Saville scoring both goals against the host nation in a 2-1 victory in Haifa. The winning goal against Israel was probably the strangest one he ever scored. The ball was headed out of the box from a corner and as it bounced he back-heeled it hard on the half-volley from 20 yards out and it flew past the keeper into the top corner of the net. He won silver at the 1965 Maccabiah Games. Saville scored over 350 goals during his playing career.
Later in the 1960s he started his own fashion business in Commercial Road and for over 30 years brought his own creative innovations to the world of fashion. He married his beloved wife Sheila in 1966 just a few weeks before England won the World Cup and they were married for 53 years. After retiring from football he took up squash and made it to the final of the All-London Maccabi Open Championship. He later took up tennis and represented Great Britain Seniors in Spain and at the 1997 Maccabiah.
Into his eighties he was still super fit, swimming 80-100 lengths every day. Saville was respected and held in the highest esteem in the fashion industry and in the football world and by all those fortunate enough to have encountered this wonderful, kind, compassionate man. He never forgot his humble beginnings in East London. In December 2019 he enjoyed one of his proudest moments, accompanying his wife of 53 years Sheila and daughter in law Mary to Buckingham Palace to watch his son Jason’s MBE investiture by Prince William, for services to Football Education and Youth with Disabilities. In keeping with his father’s legacy of giving and community spirit, Jason has launched The Covid Comfort Angels initiative to bring comfort and solace to those who are also mourning and have relatives in hospital. http://thejosephskakunproject.org/covid-comfort-angels/ Saville Shela had the ability to bring out the best attributes in everyone he met in sports and in life, he truly was a man for all seasons.

Rediscovery of the African Burial Ground alerted the City and the world to New York’s early history and the African people who worked and lived here. This burial ground is the final resting ground for ancestors from many African descended cultures. Their living legacy makes an important reminder of a dark and often forgotten period in New York City history.

The African Burial Ground National Monument is located on the first floor of the Ted Weiss Federal Building located at 290 Broadway in Lower Manhattan. A Visitor Center and exhibition space includes exhibits about the history of the cemetery, the African contribution to the building of early New York City as well as the more recent events surrounding the site’s discovery and construction. Approximately 15,000 people are buried in this ground. The remains of 419 men, women and children were uncovered when the site was escalated in 1991 and 1992. All were buried with honor in the Rites of Ancestral Return Ceremony in 2003. If every burial was excavated the wall of photos in the exhibition site would wrap the entire gallery.

Upon entering the building a park ranger invites you to the Visitor Center and exhibition site for an introduction to the African Burial Ground’s final resting place of enslaved and free Africans in New York City from the 1690’s to the 1790’s. A 1697 Dutch law banned African burials in a New York City’s cemetery. Over the next two centuries, the burial ground was covered with layer upon layer of buildings and fill material which protected the human remains until rediscovery in 1991. The African Burial Ground was designated as a national monument in 2006 by President George W. Bush, and remains the only U.S. national monument that memorializes the struggles of Africans and their descendants.

The lobby of the Ted Weiss Federal Building displays commissioned artwork inspired by the burial ground and early African experience in New York. Some of the art includes “Unearthed” by Frank Bender, “Africa Raising” by Barbara Chase-Riboud and American Song” by Clyde Lynds.

Today, an outdoor memorial designed by Rodney Leon is a living tribute to past, present and future generations of Africans and their descendants. It is located behind the Ted Weiss Federal Building at the corner of Duane Street and Elk Street. They are reburied as closely as possible to their original positions. The coffins are placed in seven crypts and seven burial mounds marked the locations. Seven trees serve as guardians for the entrance to the Ancestral Chamber.

The National Park Service Rangers will take you on a 90-minute walking tour of Lower Manhattan. Along the way you’ll hear about the first Africans who built the New Amsterdam colony, the violent revolts against oppressive British-rule and the struggle for freedom during the Revolutionary War and later on the Underground Railroad. This walking tour also features audio clips from noted authors and historians including Mike Wallace, author of Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898 and Christopher Moore, historian, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
