Acclaimed pianist Katya Grineva will return to Carnegie Hall for her “A Classical Holiday” concert for one night only, Friday, December 26, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. Celebrating her 23rd Stern Auditorium appearance, Katya has performed at the venue more than any other female artist. In what has become a seasonal tradition for local New York City families and tourists alike, Katya’s festive concert is a highlight of the holiday season.

As part of her unwavering commitment to sharing the beauty of classical music with underserved youth, Katya’s non-profit organization, Katya Concerts for Kids, will extend a heartfelt invitation to more than 300 children from Harlem and the Bronx to attend the concert as her special guests. This inspiring initiative offers these young audiences not only the gift of world-class music but also the opportunity to dream bigger, experience the arts firsthand, and feel seen and valued within one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world.

Performing works from her holiday album A Classical Holiday, Katya showcases new arrangements of Christmas classics including The Nutcracker, My Favorite Things, and more. Drawn to spirituality and mysticism, Katya’s poetic style brings a different ethereal dimension to this holiday concert. This year’s program includes the mystical O choruscans lux stellarum by Von Bingen, Gershwin’s Embraceable You, the rarely played Liszt Legendes, and more.

About Katya Grineva

Born in Moscow, Katya began studying piano at the age of six, attending the Moscow Music School. She went on to the Moscow High School of Music under the aegis of the prestigious Moscow Conservatory, where she studied with Professor Pavel Messner. In New York, she was awarded a scholarship to immediately enter the Mannes School of Music graduate program, studying with Nina Svetlanova, followed by private coaching with Vladja Mashke, who played a key role in the young pianist’s development. Katya made her American debut in 1993 with the Baltimore Symphony. In 1998, she made her Carnegie Hall debut. In 2006, Katya was chosen to exclusively perform and record the world premieres of piano sonatas by romantic Viennese composer Marcel Tyberg. In 2023, she had the distinct honor of opening the new Field Arts & Events Hall in Port Angeles, Washington.

In 2011, I had the crazy idea to walk the entire original Manhattan Grid – from 1st Street to 155th. It took six years traversing the streets from the East River to the Hudson as I was visiting each business, meeting the owners and listening to their stories. It was a marvelous adventure that is documented on my website sideways.nyc

Throughout the pandemic, I have continued to be a dedicated advocate for small businesses. In March last year, I made the decision to self-publish Walking Manhattan Sideways – Side Street Businesses That Have Stood the Test of Time gosideways.nyc.

The book showcases the quintessential businesses that have survived over the course of many decades. While some are beloved and well-known establishments that continue to garner recognition, the book also shines a light on the astounding number of places that perennially fly under the radar.

This has been a passion project that people have enjoyed simply flipping through to read stories that spark their interest, or to embrace it from cover to cover. There have been television interviews including NBC, several articles have been written about the book nypost.com and the book was featured in all of the NY taxis!

The flood of gratitude and appreciation for the first book inspired me to begin working on another this past spring. In addition to shining a light on many more scrumptious restaurants, splendid neighborhood bars and one-of-a-kind shops that have survived on the side streets for decades, The Art of Walking Manhattan Sideways features magnificent places of worship, fascinating not-for-profits, and the Arts – in all its forms – galleries, museums, music venues and schools, dance institutes and theaters.

World’s First Parasailing Trick Shot Happens off Coast of Jersey Shore
(July 31, 2019 – Wildwood, NJ) – Leading up to four games in Wildwood, NJ, Harlem Globetrotters star Zeus McClurkin made history with the first ever trick shot from a parasail. The incredible video below was released minutes ago and is approved for media (courtesy Harlem Globetrotters).
MORE INFO: In the video, Zeus is seen parasailing in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Wildwood, NJ, when he radios for a second boat to travel under him with a basketball hoop. Flying over 100-feet above, Zeus nails the shot despite the wind and waves. He followed up the parasailing shots with two more shots from one boat to another.

“I just hit one of my toughest trick shots ever,” said McClurkin on the boat ride back to the dock. “Today, I faced my toughest defense ever: waves, wind, and math.”

Zeus continues a summertime tradition in Wildwood with his unprecedented trick shot. His teammate Bull Bullard made a shot on the Skycoaster ride at Morey’s Piers in 2016, from a helicopter above the beach in 2017, and via an airplane in 2018.

The Harlem Globetrotters will play four games at the Wildwoods Convention Center from Wednesday, Aug. 14 through Saturday, Aug. 17. They will continue their summer tour with two games on Sunday, Aug. 18 in Blue Bell, PA, before travelling to Arizona and Nevada later in the month. Apollo Theater Announces the

First Phase in Creating

the Apollo Performing Arts Center

Two new theaters, office space, and support for artists and cultural organizations to open at the Victoria Theater Redevelopment Project
Fall 2020

Harlem, NY – (December 4, 2018). The Apollo Theater announced today that it is undertaking the initial phase of the iconic Theater’s transformation into the Apollo Performing Arts Center through two new theaters within the Victoria Theater Redevelopment Project at 233 West 125^th Street. The theaters will be the first physical expansion of the Apollo in its nearly 85-year history. Scheduled to open in fall 2020, the two new theaters at the Victoria space will allow the nonprofit Apollo Theater, which will operate the spaces, to increase the number of programming, educational, and community programs it offers. They will also house the Classical Theatre of Harlem, Harlem Arts Alliance, and Jazzmobile, the cultural partners designated by Empire State Development, enhancing Apollo’s advocacy for African-American, African-diasporic, and Harlem-based artists and culture. In conjunction with the initiative, the Apollo will develop a theater rental subsidy program for nonprofits, with details to be announced. The Victoria Theater’s revitalization into a creative and community resource expands on the Apollo’s mission to work with and support a greater number of emerging and established artists of color across disciplines, and serve as an artistic, educational, and community resource.

“The Apollo Theater is reaffirming its deep responsibility to our community and to the emerging and world-class artists with whom we work while, simultaneously, creating ways to offer even greater opportunities to artists, audiences, students, and the community and safeguarding the spirit and cultural character of Harlem,” said Apollo Theater President and CEO Jonelle Procope. “At the heart of this endeavor and the future Apollo Performing Arts Center is the Apollo’s desire to expand our many positive impacts. The Victoria revitalization is the right moment to support the important work New York’s cultural organizations are doing while expanding our programming and educational offerings, shepherding in the next generation of the creative workforce of color.”

The Apollo Theater will serve as the operator and manager for the theaters located within the Victoria Theater Redevelopment Project, a public/private partnership that also includes residential units, retail, and a hotel. The Apollo will manage the cultural initiatives, including two new, state-of-the-art, flexible performance venues, one with 99 seats and the other with 199 seats, and office space for the Apollo and partner cultural organizations. Separate developers will manage the commercial aspects of the building. The Victoria Theater Redevelopment Project is a part of the revitalization of 125^th Street by the State of New York.

Apollo’s 25,000-square foot facility, designed by Kostow Greenwood Architects, will be located on the third and fourth floors of the building. The expanded venue will allow the Apollo to serve the needs of its artists, artistic partners, staff, audiences, the community, and tourists who travel to Harlem every year.

“The Apollo is the soul of American culture, and the Apollo Performing Arts Center will allow us to share that culture with an even wider audience, not only with the Apollo’s own productions, but with other cultural institutions that will help us create and develop the kinds of resources that serve the creative community and audiences around the corner and around the world,” said Apollo Theater Executive Producer Kamilah Forbes. “The new theaters will allow the Apollo to provide support for artists throughout their career, especially emerging artists, and will provide an opportunity for us to grow our artistic programming as we continue to create a new, 21^st-century performing arts cannon and provide space to incubate, develop, and collaborate on new works that speak directly to the needs of our community. This expansion will allow the Apollo to look to the future while protecting the heritage that makes Harlem such an indispensable part of New York City and the world.”

Gifts and grants from a variety of public and private funders helped to make the theaters at the Victoria possible, including Booth Ferris Foundation, Empire State Development, the Harlem Community Development Corporation, The New York Community Trust – LuEsther T. Mertz Advised Fund, and the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone.

“With UMEZ’s substantial commitment to the Victoria Theater Redevelopment Project, and our grant support to the Apollo Theater, we believe these two dramatic new stages will showcase the wide-ranging creative talents that make Upper Manhattan their home base. These fully-equipped, multi-purpose theaters will further enliven 125^th Street, now re-emerging as a vibrant cultural corridor, particularly for artists of color,” said Blair M. Duncan, President and CEO of the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone. “We are proud to be supporting this dynamic project, which will bring both cultural and economic vitality to Upper Manhattan.”

The theaters at the Victoria will add vital new space for cultural and educational programming while preserving and restoring a reminder of Harlem’s rich history,” said Curtis Archer, President of the Harlem Community Development Corporation. “HCDC looks forward to bringing both a new mixed-use, mixed-income development and hundreds of new jobs to the neighborhood through the Victoria Theater Redevelopment Project as a whole.”

The Globetrotters created the school assembly with the National Campaign to Stop Violence. The program discourages bullying, cultivates empathy and assures the bullied that they are not alone. T.E.A.M. stands for Talk, Empathy, Ask, and Mobilize. The program’s curriculum was finalized last month.

The Globetrotters are in New York City giving back to the community and preparing for their new Fan Powered World Tour, which will bring games to Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center over Thanksgiving Weekend and seven additional games throughout NYC, New Jersey, and Long Island after Christmas.
