With New Year Starting Soon Time to Learn & Embrace Healthy Habits

You May Be Surprised When & Why Most Start Living a Healthier Lifestyle

It’s that time of year – when people begin reevaluating their habits, especially when it comes to eating, exercise and living an overall healthier lifestyle.

While many people believe a healthier lifestyle will improve their lifespan (how many years a person lives), the more important aspect is how it will improve their healthspan (the number of healthy disease-free years of life).

A new survey finds:

A whopping 57% of respondents* say they started healthy habits because of medical reasons.
36% say they were advised to adopt healthy lifestyle behaviors by a physician.
32% say that they started healthy habits in order to mitigate health issues.
Only 36% say they learned healthy habits at a young age from parents or loved ones.
Meanwhile one in four (26%) parents** admit they feel negative emotions when thinking about their children’s nutritional intake and diet, with 18% feeling “frustrated” and one in ten (10%) feeling helpless.

In other survey findings, 62% respondents*** have suffered from gut problems, with one in three (34%) saying they were suffering from gut problems currently.

The survey also found that although the vast majority responding use vitamins or supplements daily, and almost half (47%) mistakenly believe the FDA approves vitamins and supplements. One in four (24%) say vitamins/supplements are “critical” to maintaining their health.

These findings are part of Amway’s first annual “Habits and Healthspan” survey. The idea behind the survey is to help share information to motivate people to live healthier lifestyles. Although more than $4.3 trillion is spent on healthcare currently in the U.S., the gap between life expectancy and healthspan is still growing. Today, the average American will spend the last 13 years of his or her life in poor health.

Holiday Durham, PhD, MS, and registered dietician will discuss the survey results and explain how we can adapt a healthy lifestyle to live a longer disease-free life. Holiday is also a clinical investigator at Amway leading the strategy and product innovation of the global women’s and children’s health and nutrition portfolios.

The inaugural Blue Jacket Fashion Show and Dinner was held Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Pier 59 Studios during New York Men’s Fashion Week. In partnership with Johnson & Johnson, the Blue Jacket Fashion Show benefited the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF), founded by philanthropist and financier Michael Milken. Money raised will go towards funding cutting-edge research that will save, extend and improve the lives of not only prostate cancer patients but other cancer patients as well.

The Blue Jacket Fashion Show brought together the fashion, entertainment, sports, healthcare, and media worlds around a national platform to openly discuss men’s cancer issues, with an emphasis on prostate cancer. Coinciding with February’s Cancer Prevention Month and New York Men’s Fashion Week, the Blue Jacket Fashion Show included designers such as John Varvatos, Nick Graham, Joseph Abboud, Nicole Miller, Rag and Bone, Proper Cloth, Stephen F, Maggie Norris, Gustavo Moscoso, Thom Browne and Haspel who used their creative talents to “reinvent” the traditional blue blazer.

Those walking the runway wearing one-of-a-kind blue jackets included models, actors, athletes, members of the media, and business titans. Among those walking were actor Mario Cantone, musician and model Ian Mellencamp, New York Giants Wide Receiver Victor Cruz, TV personality Carson Kressley, science educator and host of the forthcoming Netflix series Bill Nye Saves the World Bill Nye, New York Yankees Pitcher CC Sabathia, New York Post’s Richard Johnson, model Alex Lundqvist, and CNN Anchor Don Lemon. Several of the specially designed jackets modeled during the show will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The fashion show was followed by a cocktail reception and a 3-course dinner, featuring seasonal ingredients and Mediterranean inspired dishes, designed by Executive Chef Simone Cucchiara. While guests were enjoying dinner, President and CEO of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Dr. Jonathan Simons, addressed the attendees and thanked them for making it a memorable first Blue Jacket event in support of prostate cancer research and hoping to see everyone next year, making the Blue Jacket Fashion Show and Dinner a new annual event. A silent auction was also held, featuring sought-after sports memorabilia and original artworks, all proceeds benefiting the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Pfizer launches new campaign to inspire postmenopausal women to tune into their bodies

NEW YORK, N.Y., Sept. 23 – Every day, an estimated 6,000 women in the United States reach menopause. To inspire this growing population of women and to share her story, Golden Globe® winning actress Kim Cattrall has teamed up with Pfizer Inc. Working together for a healthier world (NYSE: PFE), makers of prescription menopause treatments for certain menopausal symptoms, to launch theTune In To Menopause(www.TuneInToMenopause.com) campaign which is designed to bring the conversation front and center and motivate women during this time of life.

As an actress, Kim Cattrall had “pretend” hot flashes on-screen before she ever experienced them in real life. “I thought I was prepared for menopause, hot flashes and more, but when my body started changing, I realized I still had questions. But the more I learned and listened to what my body was telling me, the more I relaxed, adjusted and realized I could manage this by working closely with my doctor,” said Cattrall. “That’s why I’ve partnered with Pfizer on Tune In To Menopause to share some of what I’ve learned and encourage all women to join me and ‘tune in’ to our bodies, and embrace menopause with style and as another fabulous chapter in our lives.”

Visitors can take an interactive quiz about their approach to menopause, and get a unique look into some of the changes they may experience (hot flashes and bone loss). For each quiz completed, Pfizer will donate $1 (up to $50,000) to Dress for Success, a not-for-profit organization that helps women get back to work and empowers women within the workforce. Studies show that up to 80 percent of women experience hot flashes due to menopause. In a survey commissioned by Pfizer, half of women experienced moderate-to-severe hot flashes.Menopausal women may also experience bone loss, which can lead to osteoporosis. In fact, approximately 50 percent of women in the U.S. age 50 and older may have low bone mass.

“Menopause is a natural part of the evolution of a woman’s life, and in my OB/GYN practice, I’ve found that there is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach to managing menopause,” said Dr. Patricia J. Sulak, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Texas A&M College of Medicine. “While many women are aware of the more bothersome symptoms, like hot flashes, unseen changes like risk of bone loss are just as important to understand and recognize. I encourage all patients to pay attention to the changes in their body, stay educated, and have ongoing conversations with their healthcare professional.”

About Menopause
Menopause is a normal, natural event. It marks the permanent end of fertility and is usually confirmed when a woman has not menstruated for 12 consecutive months and it is not due to other medical causes. Menopause is associated with reduced functioning of the ovaries due to aging, resulting in lower levels of estrogens and other hormones. Changes in these hormones cause symptoms of menopause, which may include hot flashes and bone loss.

Lower levels of estrogens at the time of menopause are associated with rapid bone loss.
