About Our School

Located in southern Westchester county, approximately 20 miles north of New York City, and standing above the east bank of the Hudson River, Sleepy Hollow High School serves approximately 850 ethnically and socio-economically diverse students in grades 9 through 12 from the villages of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.

We have become a community of choice for families who value our “snap shot” of the real world: Our community is a destination point for families immigrating from the Caribbean and Latin America, and home to families who have been in our villages for generations; families who can afford to send their children to any one of a number of private schools in the area, choose instead to have their children attend our public school. Collectively, these families created and provide continuous support for The Foundation for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns, which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to supplement our educational program.

In October 1957, Sleepy Hollow High School was the focus of an article “New buildings won’t educate your children” in Woman’s Day magazine. Although the 1957 physical plant was deemed “as handsome a high school as any in America,” the renovated curriculum was recognized as enabling our graduates to have “a better chance today than ever before to become all that they are capable of.” While our sprawling building on its scenic campus had been well maintained and consistently upgraded, it experienced many of the facilities restrictions of comparable structures built in the 1950s and has undergone major renovations and expansion over the last two years: One hundred thousand square feet of state-of-the-art science labs, art studios, a gymnasium that boasts a fitness center and dedicated wrestling room, an auditorium that seats 750 and provides professional quality sound and light engineering, a renovated and expanded Library Media Center, a cafeteria with a food court, wireless capability throughout the building, and more than 20 new classrooms now overlook the Hudson River. All pre-existing classrooms are refurbished, outfitted with Smartboards, and white boards have replaced 1957 black boards. What hasn’t changed since 1957 is the public and academic communities’ shared belief that there is “no substitute for a solid foundation” in education. Sleepy Hollow curriculum is continually examined and adjusted to meet or exceed best-practices.

In 2008, Sleepy Hollow was selected by the Magellan foundation to represent one of three exemplary New York State high schools to have programs and practices that lead to high graduation and low drop-out rates. Sleepy Hollow was among the top 40 from over 640 schools to reach benchmark graduation rate standards and was one of five exemplary high schools chosen for in-depth research, study, and visitation by the Magellan Foundation. In 2009, the United States Department of Education featured us on their website “Doing What Works” as one of five schools nationally identified as putting best practices in action to achieve graduation.

Our comprehensive high school programs are designed to meet the needs of each adolescent we serve. We build relationships with our students and their families that guide everyone through the stress and strife of adolescence. Thriving athletic and performing arts programs are complemented by an extensive extra curricular program. A new source of pride is our award winning student-produced Multimedia Production Team, recipient of Honorable Mention in the Adobe Max competition for professional international media developers; Sleepy Hollow’s team came in second to Homeland Security and NASA Space Center. We have established extensive partnerships with local colleges, corporations, and the community at large. Support from local historical and business resources has made our community an extension of our campus; students conduct research and participate in internships as an integral part of our academic program.

Our creativity and commitment has been acknowledged through consistently passed local school budgets, and the award of state, federal, and private foundation grants. Locally, smaller grants have provided funding for cultural trips for students, added instruments to our band and orchestra, audio equipment for our multimedia students, robotic kits for AP Physics students, a gardening component to our Life Skills curriculum for our most handicapped students, and provided a weather station for our Earth Science students.

We are proud of our students’ records of accomplishment. An impressive percentage of students from the Class of 2009—89%—continued their studies in higher education. In the recent past, our top students have matriculated at Emory, Wesleyan, Brown, Cornell, Georgetown, Northwestern, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, USC, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Vassar, Stanford, Tufts, and Middlebury. We are equally proud of the many first generation graduates we send to local and community colleges. Annually, our students earn an impressive number of scholarship dollars, averaging in excess of $280,000 in each of the last five years.

A key factor to our success is the involvement of our parents in their children’s education; parents feel welcome at our school. Our PTSA sponsors Parent-to-Parent Nights. These events, offered in English and Spanish, enable parents to share strategies for raising a teenager. The PTSA, The Foundation, and our Sports and Performing Arts Boosters raise funds for our curricular and extra curricular programs. Our Parenting Center, located in the heart of the village, provides information about all district schools and a wide range of support for parents.

Sleepy Hollow is an exciting place for students and staff to work and learn together. If any school community can demonstrate that public education is alive and well, it is ours. Our school slogan, “Sleepy Hollow, Say it Proudly” sums up the collective commitment to our school.

The event, titled “2024 ANOBO ‘1 World’ Children’s Global Competence Education Panel Discussion at the United Nations Headquarters, New York,”was organized by the NO-BOundaries nonprofit organization in collaboration with various international schools, institutions, and artists. The 2024 annual children’s global competence education launch kicked off with a special exhibition featuring creative art pieces from children across the globe, conveying their vivid ideas and feelings. The exhibition hall displayed the artworks sequentially, with the children’s dynamic brushstrokes coming to life in vibrant colors, presenting a cross-cultural and artistic feast. The exhibition comprised two sections: “Growing Peace” and “1 Planet.”

“Growing Peace” featured collaborative art created by students from Beijing Montessori International School, Italian artist Jacopo Della Ragione, and New York youth. Children from Beijing and their peers in New York worked together to produce a symbolic piece of art. Young artists such as Feiyu Chen, Ziming Huang, Valerie Wang, Nova Wang, Jerry Zhang, Jay Wu, Joshua Minghong Li, Louise Roux, Lucas Wang, Lucien Wang, Vincent Liu, William Wu, William Zhang, Xinyang Qin, Xinyue Qin, Yitong Wang, and Zuzanna Pawlaczyk-Pan, guided by artist Jacopo Della Ragione, contributed to this creation. Their artwork conveys the ideas of cooperation and respect, aiming to promote awareness and pursuit of peace on Earth.

The art was drawn on paper cut into the shape of two hands coming together to form a peace dove. The children used colored crayons to freely depict their longing for world peace. These drawings were then attached to a “tree” outlined by the children, symbolizing the vibrant life of peace thoughts and the growth of children nurturing dreams of peace.

The “1 Planet” section emphasizes human connections, linking young artists from different regions to create collaboratively. Each child painted their vision of the world on a semi-circular paper representing half of a “planet.” These “half-worlds” were matched with another child’s artwork to merge into “1 World.” The process highlighted the diverse understandings of a single planet, showing how future developments are rooted in history, and how cultural respect and exchange enrich the macrocosm of our universe.

The fusion of art and education allowed the children’s boundless imaginations to be concretized and visualized, further stimulating their creativity. Through the artistic creation process, children actively discovered and explored the world, understood their connection to it, recognized its diversity, and developed an awareness of “unity in diversity” while expressing their hopes for peace and envisioning the future world. This unique educational approach enlightens the children’s minds, helping them build bridges between themselves and the broader world through exploration and discovery.

During the interactive session, host Wang Zaozao invited Khalid Sulaiman Ba Omar, Permanent Observer of the Gulf Cooperation Council to the United Nations, and Henry Ye, Director of the NO-BOundaries nonprofit organization, to interact with the children. Omar encouraged the children to fully utilize their artistic talents to contribute to world peace and become future peace ambassadors.

Subsequently, representatives from Beijing Montessori International School, China Soong Ching Ling Youth Science and Culture Exchange Center, ANOBO Global Sustainable Development Goal Ambassadors, and bloggers Guo Yushan, Michael Xiang, Du Kefi, Qian Kangming, Roger Eckner, and Allyana Filiault etc took turns giving speeches on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, expressing their understanding and hopes regarding environmental protection, poverty alleviation, and international cooperation.

The children’s speeches on sustainable development not only showcased their deep understanding of the topic but also reflected their valuable experiences gained through hands-on practice. On August 1 and 2, student representatives from the ANOBO “1 world” children’s global competence education program participated in the Educational Field Program at  Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. They collaborated with leading geologists, marine scientists, and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory team to explore the Hudson River field station and the Earth and Polar Sciences Department. Guided by researchers, the children learned about marine food chains, conducted water quality and clarity tests, compared glacier melting rates, and analyzed laboratory data to deepen their scientific understanding. This experience enhanced their scientific inquiry skills and deepened their environmental awareness, instilling a sense of responsibility for the future and driving them to become active advocates and ambassadors for sustainable development.

This special panel disscussion was not just a practice in art education but also an exploration of the world. It is believed that the event will nurture the children’s creativity and imagination, inspire their hopes for peace and visions for a sustainable future, and encourage them to broaden their horizons and strengthen their sense of social responsibility. Let us look forward to these hopeful seeds blossoming into brilliant flowers in the future, bringing more beauty to the world!

Earlier this week, Henry Kissinger, a former U.S. Secretary of State and national security advisor, passed away at the age of 100. While he left mixed feelings on his actions over the course of his career, there’s no question that Kissinger had left an influential mark on politics

Kissinger was actually the first Jewish Secretary of State when he was sworn into office, which would later become a pressure point to the Nixon administration, becoming a key factor on said pressure with Israel when it came to withdraw from approaching Cairo and Damascus during the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

But the interesting thing is how Kissinger’s passing actually relates to current politics. Antony Blinken, also Jewish, now serves as Secretary of State, and is actually visited Israel this week to meet with leaders over the ongoing ceasefire in the war against Hamas.

The reason this comes up is because of the pressure that now comes from the Biden administration, though on a much different level than what Nixon’s did, in regards to the message they’re trying to convey. Not to mention the significance of their involvement in the 2024 Presidential election, which will no doubt draw both pro-Israel voters, as well as millions of Jews and Christians.

With us now to talk about Kissinger’s legacy and how it has these interesting ties with the modern political scene is Jonathan Feldstein, a key Israeli figure and founder of the Genesis 123 Foundation (based on Genesis 12:3). His expertise in what’s happening in Israel should prove useful with this discussion. We welcome him to the show.

Words of Advice for Young leaders to share his experiences and learnings with young professionals looking to develop the skills needed to build self-confidence, navigate uncertainty and achieve their greatest goals.

Chuck’s passion for mentoring young professionals shines through in his speaking engagements, but it’s his compassion for family, friends, colleagues and every person he connects with that has inspired our foundation’s board to mobilize our mission of inspiring action to reduce toxins in our environment that have a particularly adverse effect on those with autoimmune diseases.

The Saia family has closely witnessed the trials and tribulations the autoimmune disease Lupus can place on a family. Chuck, Allison and their two sons, Ethan and Matthew, have supported Allison’s sister Amy Szoke and her family, through two lupus induced strokes, daily joint pain and fatigue as well as a recent diagnosis of Lupus Nephritis.

The Saia and Szoke families are just two of the thousands of families and millions of people impacted by Lupus in the United States alone. There’s not a cure nor even a trivial understanding of the root cause.

The latest research studies, however, are discovering more about how our environment plays a role in our health. Environmental toxins’ effect on Lupus activity is part of the 2021 Pre-Matriculation program at Quinnipiac University where Professor and YGTK Board member Courtney McGinnis. will be teaching pre-med students about the connectivity. The students will also hear from other board members Amy Szoke and Karin Wagner in a fireside chat discussing the patient provider relationship and their personal journeys with Lupus.

Frederick who lives for part of the year in The Netherlands and also has a UK base in Cheshire – has been involved in peace activism since the early 1980’s, and is the Founder and President of Children of the World 2000, a not for profit organisation supported by the International Peace Bureau and UNESCO.

He is patron of several NGOs including the Earth Focus Foundation in Switzerland, the Lady Geertruide School Project in Haiti and the World Peace Gardens Network.

After leaving university the prince joined the family firm, an import-export business, and was also involved in publishing, travel writing and photography. His present work is as a World Peace Emissary and he is a Fellow of the International Institute of Peace Studies & Global Philosophy.

We met with the prince at the UN General Assembly in the Fall of 2002 together with Dame Jane Goodall a UN Messenger for Peace and Founder of the Jane Goodall and Roots n’ Shoots initiative.
