Despite many people believing the HIV crisis is “solved,” HIV remains a critical public health issue with more than 31,000[1] new diagnoses in the US each year.
Thankfully, as science and research have advanced, there are many tools available to help prevent HIV, including PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) which is medicine that prevents people from getting HIV. PrEP, when taken as indicated, is highly effective, and yet many who might benefit do not receive a prescription.

According to preliminary data released by the CDC[2], in 2022, only about 36% of the 1.2 million people who could benefit from PrEP were prescribed it.

The CDC[3] also estimates that only 10% for women who could benefit from PrEP receive a prescription for it.

October 21 marks the start of PrEP Aware Week which shines a light on the importance of HIV prevention and the communities that are disproportionately impacted by HIV. The dedicated week is a time to educate everyone on the incidence rates of HIV, who could benefit from PrEP, and where to learn more about the different options available, including a daily pill or a long-acting injectable.
On Wednesday, October 23, Dr. Kimberly Smith, Head of Research and Development at ViiV Healthcare, will discuss ViiV’s comprehensive and innovative approach to HIV prevention and treatment and the role of prevention in ending the HIV epidemic once and for all.

After obtaining her MD degree and completing her pediatrics residency at Duke University, Harmony pursued her interest in infectious diseases further with fellowships in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology at Duke, along with her MPH in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following her training, Harmony maintained an active clinical practice, providing care to children and adolescents living with HIV and other infectious diseases.

In 2005, Harmony joined GSK’s HIV program in the Infectious Diseases group, working on global development programs as a project physician leader. In this role she oversaw three successful New Drug and Marketing Authorization Applications and provided medical leadership and strategy for the development of various other anti-infectives including the first human trials of dolutegravir – the most prescribed HIV medicine in the world.

Subsequently, Harmony joined the Global Clinical Safety and Pharmacovigilance team at GSK, where she provided safety strategy and governance for several large global clinical development programs in the pharmaceutical space. She then led a large, global team overseeing the safety aspects of GSK’s large Classic and Established Medicines portfolio. From there, she joined the GSK Consumer Health business, where she spent three years as the Chief Medical Officer. She then joined ViiV Healthcare in 2016 and has held several roles in Global Medical Affairs before assuming her current role of Chief Medical Officer at the company in 2019.

Incredible advancements have been made in HIV care since the beginning of the epidemic, and today, people living with HIV who have access to medication can expect to live as long as the general population.1 With nearly half of people living with HIV in the U.S. over the age of 50, HIV research and treatment efforts have shifted to consider how to optimize care over the long-term and reduce the number of medications in a complete regimen.2

New data at AIDS 2022 will focus on innovative treatment options that address these considerations and meet the evolving needs of the HIV community. Data include two-drug regimens that reduce the number of antiretroviral medicines people are exposed to every day and treatments for long-term survivors who have developed resistance to other HIV therapies.

Health disparities are defined as avoidable and unfair differences in the health of people or groups that negatively impact their quality of life and life expectancy. Research has shown that clear disparities exist in relation to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, mental health, and COVID-19.

Now a new report conducted by Economist Impact explores the opportunities that could be created by eliminating health disparities over the next 20 years, while charting a bold course for unified action. Some key findings in the report include:
• Disparities in care are avoidable, unfair, and cost us all
• Addressing inequities must be an urgent moral, social, and economic priority
• Various organizations must contribute to the pursuit of health equity
• Systems are slow to promote equity because they are often incentivized not to

The next steps to achieve health equity by 2040 include the following recommended actions:
1. Restructuring the health system to incentivize prevention for both physical and mental health
2. Reimagining investment beyond the upfront cost, towards longer term investments
3. Making practical changes that improve collaboration
4. Improving knowledge of how to best reach certain populations

The report concludes that inaction can be as powerful as action. It shows that to eliminate health disparities, key groups at a community and system level must work together to improve health equity.

Dr. Keith Rawlings, M.D., Senior Medical Director of ViiV Healthcare, will be available to discuss the impact of health inequities in your local community and how they are negatively impacting particular groups, including Black, Latinx, and minority ethnic groups. HIV has been thrust into the spotlight recently, with innovative new therapies becoming available and the President pledging to end transmissions of the virus in the U.S. by 2030.

In just three decades, HIV has gone from an untreatable virus to one that is manageable with the right treatment regimen. Clinicians and people living with HIV can now focus on addressing the quality of life challenges that remain, namely those associated with stigma and the overall impact of lifelong therapy.

Some HIV advances in the past few years include:
• Increased awareness and new information related to transmission – when the virus is undetectable it is untransmittable
• Understanding the challenges facing people living with HIV while taking HIV medications over a lifetime
• New HIV treatment focused on decreasing exposure to the number of antiretroviral medications

Dr. Patricia Quinn is a developmental pediatrician in the Washington, D.C. area. A graduate of the Georgetown University Medical School, she specializes in child development and psychopharmacology. Dr. Quinn has worked for more than 28 years in the areas of ADHD and learning disabilities. She gives workshops nationwide and has appeared on Lifetime TV’s New Attitudes and the PBS show To the Contrary discussing the issue of girls and women with ADD.
