<p>The most famous city in the world is undoubtedly New York. In Central Park in Manhattan, plants and birds coexist harmoniously with humans, making it a happy living place. Surrounding the park, in thousands of buildings, reside world-renowned celebrities, Hollywood stars, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and new wealthy elites from China. Despite their different languages and skin colors, they share their space politely and graciously. Next to Central Park is a mile-long avenue known as “Museum Mile,” home to countless genuine artifacts from the Metropolitan to the Guggenheim, including treasures looted from China by the Eight-Nation Alliance.</p>
<p>New York boasts many famous avenues and streets. World-famous brand stores like LV, Chanel, and Estée Lauder are neighbors on Fifth Avenue, and many others extending to the 42nd Street and intersecting with Broadway, the birthplace of stunning musicals and home to shows such as The Lion King, Aladdin, Cats, Marry Poppins and many more. Time Square is called the crossroads of the world, bustling 24/7 with tourists capturing every moment on their iPhones. At this global crossroads stands the giant Nasdaq screen, showcasing ticker symbols of at least 350 Chinese listed companies, telling the world about their dreams from China.</p>
<p>Broadway is where dreams take place. The buildings around Broadway have been telling many dreams, one of which is a Chinese brand &#8211; The Haier Group. For the past 20 years, the story has continued.</p>
<p>In the early 1980s, at the start of China&#8217;s reform and opening-up, Haier Group, which imported a German technology from a German company called Liebour Haier. The German company insisted that the backward poor Chinese electronics in Qingdao must carry their names or at least one word/ Liebour or Haier. The Chinese company chose the later for the namesake of an ocean &#8211; “hai er “ sounds in Chinese like ocean. The company soon grew into a giant conglomerate and became China’s top brand manufacturing high quality refrigerators.In 2002, Haier took a bold step and as the first Chinese company going global and ventured into the US. They established its presence at 1356 Broadway &#8211; The Haier Building. Despite various challenges, including the fluctuating US-China relations, Haier Group has remained steadfast. People need to eat, and food needs to stay fresh, making a good refrigerator is essential. The era of eating spoiled food and drinking dirty water should never return. In the upcoming era of AI robots coexisting with humans, having a comfortable, jointly created US-China smart kitchen at home and enjoying fresh, varied, healthy meals from an open kitchen is something to look forward to, isn’t it?</p>
<p>Walking a few blocks down Broadway brings you to 1227 Broadway. There stands the Virgin Hotel, built by John Lam in collaboration with Richard Branson, chairman of Rolling Stone Entertainment Magazine and one of the world&#8217;s three private spaceship manufacturers alongside Elon Musk and Jeffery Bezos. Yes, the renowned Virgin Hotel is located at 1227 Broadway, New York, NY 10001 and Branson&#8217;s partner is a Chinese individual on New York soil, you didn’t read it wrong or hear it wrong.</p>
<p>The name Virgin signifies unexplored territory, symbolizing bold exploration and adventure. Even after Branson&#8217;s Virgin spacecraft crashed into eight pieces while returning from the moon, he stood smiling beside it, undeterred in his space suit. Mortality is inevitable, and business innovation might fail, but for whom do we live and die?</p>
<p>Virgin Airlines, Virgin Cruise, Virgin Hotel – Branson designed these for the future generation capable of making history. Without these visionary and skilled individuals, we wouldn’t be enjoying the benefits of AI today from the comfort of our homes. Branson aims to create a hotel where these elite genius can quietly and undisturbed explore the future world, the mysteries of the universe, and extraterrestrial life. After their tireless efforts for our comfort, they need a place to rest in a modern and an innovative hotel for the future. This hotel must be neighbors with companies like Open AI, Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and IBM. The remarkable achievements from these technology companies and research institutes, from laboratories to markets, are not accomplished overnight. Such extraordinary technological projects and engineering studies, benefiting humanity, require an exceptional group of young talents. Without them, today’s booming US stock market might lose its vitality and competitiveness, wouldn’t it?</p>
<p>Branson, flying his Virgin plane (not spacecraft) over New York for ten years, sought a partner to create a future-leading, world-class hotel. Amidst New York&#8217;s lush trees and blooming flowers, he found his partner in John Lam ( or Lin Jianzhong in Chinese), who came from Hong Kong and mainland China 60 years ago. Over 50 years, Lam has become the hotel king of Manhattan. His Lam Group is renowned throughout New York and the Chinese community worldwide.</p>

<p>Compelling climate narratives in television shows and movies can help <strong>shift attitudes on climate change, </strong>a new <a href="https://rare.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Small-Screen-Big-Impact-Report-The-Impact-of-Madam-Secretary.pdf" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">study</a> finds! Over a thousand participants were recruited, and researchers divided them into two groups. Half watched a climate-focused episode of <em>Madam Secretary</em> about <strong>a super typhoon menacing the Pacific Island nation of Nauru. </strong>The other half watched another episode of the same show about U.S. involvement in the Middle East.</p>
<p>People who watched the climate episode experienced “a substantial increase” in their<strong> level of concern about climate change and their support for government action.</strong> Researchers found this change persisted even two weeks after people watched the episode.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.goodenergystories.com/playbook" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Good Energy</a> (started by my friend <a href="https://www.instagram.com/annajanejoyner/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Anna Jane Joyner</a>) has a simple test for movies and TV shows to see if they’re talking about climate change.<strong> First, does climate change exist in the story world? And second, is a character aware of it? </strong></p>
<p>For a long time, the answer was usually “no” – but that’s changing now. The fifth-annual <a href="https://www.hollywoodclimatesummit.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Hollywood Climate Summit</a> wrapped up this week, where creators of all stripes came together to talk about how to best include climate in their plot lines. Just like climate change touches everything in our world, <strong>I’m convinced every story can have a climate element to it </strong>– and it’s good news to see that this is becoming more common and that it &#8230;</p>

Deep fake technology in particular has raised concern about potential harmful uses, such as political disinformation, revenge porn, and misuse of intellectual property. Concerns about disinformation are particularly high in an election year. At the same time, many “creatives” tout the game changing benefits this technology can bring to artistic and other endeavors, such as educational opportunities, enhanced freedom of expression and reduced barriers to entry. This panel will discuss these competing concerns and whether existing legal frameworks, such as right of publicity, copyright, and existing regulations, are sufficient to address this powerful technology.</p>

There are AI Internet Girlfriend platforms named Replika, Candy AI and DreamGF and Virtual Singers and Performers are in the pipeline with the backing of major organizations. What are we to make of this phenomenon? “Barbi” afterall started out as a “Children’s Doll” over a half century ago and now as a “Movie Star” and “Virtual Human” has become a “Global Phenomenon.” With that in mind, perhaps the “Cultural Narrative” of “Synths” and “Virtual Humans as Celebrities” has yet to be decided.</p>

<p>Even with the successful resolution of the Entertainment industry “Guilds” strike of 2023, there remains an ongoing fear that &#8220;artificial intelligence poses an existential threat to creative professions.&#8221; The core AI issue sparking debate in Hollywood is not only based on compensation and creative control production. Deep fake technology in particular has raised concern about potential harmful uses, such as political disinformation, revenge porn, and misuse of intellectual property. At the same time, many “creatives” tout the game changing benefits this technology can bring to artistic and other endeavors, such as educational opportunities, enhanced freedom of expression and reduced barriers to entry. This panel will discuss these competing concerns and whether existing legal frameworks, such as right of publicity, copyright, and existing regulations, are sufficient to address this powerful technology.</p>

Reflecting on this past year’s “Writers’ and SAG-AFTRA Strike,” Justine Bateman, was one among many in Hollywood expressing concern for our coming “Synthetic Entertainment Future.” To quote from her Newsweek article, Bateman was passionate and direct, “AI stands for Artificial Intelligence, but I refer to it as &#8220;Automatic Imitation.&#8221; And as Andy Weir, author of &#8220;The Martian,&#8221; has said, &#8220;before my life is over—my profession will effectively disappear.” In this session, we will continue the conversation concerning “All-Things AI,” the conversation that likely will never end.</p>

<p align="left">Our first thought was to call this panel, “AI: Inside the Black Box of the Imagination.” Artificial Intelligence, together with Machine Learning have opened the door to a relationship with a “Human Creator,” someone we might call an “Artist,” and the result is an exploration of the imagination that has never been seen before. The result is unique. Nevertheless, some critics, Jerry Saltz of New York Magazine’s Vulture among them, have articulated a clear disdain for this new and evolving art form. While others, the curators at MOMA in NYC to their credit, have honored AI’s best known artistic innovator, Rafik Anadol with a one-man show. Many have referred to AI Art as the “Design of Randomness,” referring to it’s kinship to Jackson Pollock. In this session we will explore some of those thoughts.</p>

<p align="left">Is this the first of many, a prelude to a “Federal Law” or an interesting step to secure the “Individual Rights in the face of Deep Fakes,” serving as a bellwether for future legislation, but ultimately not the final word on the subject. Tennessee’s “Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security (ELVIS) Act” passed earlier by their state legislature this year and exclusively limited to Tennessee residents is directed specifically to the issues of “Deep Fakes” and to the protection of Recording Artists and others impacted by “Voice Cloning” and other AI technologies. In this session, our speakers will address the specifics of “The Elvis Act,” with the thought that this piece of legislation is likely a “Canary in a Coal Mine,” one of the first legislative steps that may indicate of how public and political sympathies could be harbingers of AI legislation and legal decisions coming in the future.</p>

<p>In a world of AI and other new technologies, the fear of replacement of writers and directors by “Synthetic Creators” may be a misplaced concept. In fact, counterintuitively, with the arrival of “Advanced AI Software,” the ultimate power of “Creativity” may concentrate into the hands of the “Original Creative Force,” ie. the writer. If “Prompting” a story outline, developing the full project, putting it into storyboard and then into its final form, derives from the relationship between the “Creative Mind,” and the AI, then who is the “Producer” going to engage, a &#8220;Robot to Prompt the Robot?&#8221; Interestingly, the arrival and further development of technology may ultimately provide greater freedom to the writer/storyteller and as technology evolves, providing that “NextGen Writer/Director” with an even greater and enhanced creative pallet</p>

<p align="left">Not unlike the problematic impact of “Social Media,” plus powerful SmartPhones enabling negative echo chambers which enhance for many and especially among the young, personal depression, and even self-harm, AI with an entirely different set of psychological and technological tools, presents a host of new problems. While we are all quite aware of “Deep Fakes,” and how they can be used to invade privacy, innovative AI consumer technologies like “AI Sunglasses” with hidden audio and video recording capabilities, for a teen in a school or social setting may present privacy problems as well. AI carries a host of unfamiliar risks. Facial analysis tools are often less accurate than we had hoped. And chatbots, which our teens interact with as friends, can at times exhibit unusual behavior. As innovation continues accelerating, we must evaluate if convenience overrules emerging dangers.</p>

<p>Sometimes you can go home again, which for The CW came in the form of <em>The</em> <em>91</em><sup><em>st</em></sup><em> Hollywood Christmas Parade</em>. It aired on the broadcast network Friday, December 15.</p>
<p>A Tinseltown staple for over nine decades, <em>The</em> <em>Hollywood Christmas Parade</em>, in simple terms, is an indelibly American tradition. More specifically, it is a celebration of life, which is synonymous with love and support, and fun and escape. It is a gathering of like-minded individuals, all co-existing within a celebratory and charitable community spirit. It is a reminder, via <a class="color-link" title="https://www.cwtv.com/" href="https://www.cwtv.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" data-ga-track="ExternalLink:https://www.cwtv.com/" aria-label="The CW">The CW</a> and producer <a class="color-link" title="https://www.associatedtelevision.com/the-hollywood-christmas-parade/" href="https://www.associatedtelevision.com/the-hollywood-christmas-parade/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" data-ga-track="ExternalLink:https://www.associatedtelevision.com/the-hollywood-christmas-parade/" aria-label="Associated Television International">Associated Television International</a>, that tradition still matters (even following a reported shift in viewer preference and behavior). And, <em>The Hollywood Christmas Parade</em> is another reason why the linear broadcast model can still be beneficial.</p>
<p>Based on the fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen, an additional 164,000 viewers tuned in versus the network’s week-ago time period average. That was an increase of a hefty 43 percent.</p>

<p><em>The</em> <em>Hollywood Christmas</em> parade began in 1928 under the name, <em>The</em> <em>Santa Claus Lane Parade</em>. Excluding 1942 to 1944, when World War II broke out, and during the pandemic in 2020, it has run every year. The parade was the idea of businessman Harry Blaine and the Hollywood Boulevard Association, and the plan at the inception was to draw more holiday season shoppers to the area, which was being promoted as the “world’s largest department store.”</p>
<p>The first Grand Marshal of <em>The</em> <em>Hollywood Christmas Parade</em> was veteran comedian Joe E. Brown in 1932.</p>
<p>In 1946, western star and singer Gene Autry was inspired to co-write the holiday classic <em>Here Comes Santa</em> Claus (<em>Right Down Santa Claus Lane</em>) after riding his horse in the parade where crowds of spectators chanted those very words.</p>
<p>In 1978, the annual event was renamed <em>The Hollywood Christmas Parade</em>, which coincided with a shift to its scheduling from Thanksgiving Eve to the Sunday after Thanksgiving.</p>
<p>This year, the emphasis of the parade was widened in focus to communities in celebration of the unsung heroes that have made a positive impact.</p>
<p>“We thought it was more important than ever to emphasize the community spirit,” said Laura McKenzie, who co-hosted with Dean Cain, Erik Estrada, former talk show host Montel Williams, and Elizabeth Stanton (<em>World’s Funniest Animals</em>).</p>
<p>“These are particularly trying times and we must stand together and honor all the people who have committed acts of bravery or self-sacrifice, but have not been celebrated or recognized,” noted McKenzie. “This parade truly defines a unified spirit and positive hope for the future. It is a time to come together and simply celebrate.”</p>

<p>Flash to the present, and the annual <a class="color-link" title="https://www.associatedtelevision.com/the-hollywood-christmas-parade/" href="https://www.associatedtelevision.com/the-hollywood-christmas-parade/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" data-ga-track="ExternalLink:https://www.associatedtelevision.com/the-hollywood-christmas-parade/" aria-label="Hollywood Christmas Parade"><em data-ga-track="ExternalLink:https://www.associatedtelevision.com/the-hollywood-christmas-parade/">Hollywood Christmas Parade</em></a>, which benefited the <em>Marine Toys for Tots</em> charity, took place on Sunday, November 26 and ran for three miles along Hollywood Boulevard, Orange Street, Vine Street, and Sunset Boulevard. This year, U.S. Army Col. Paris D. Davis had the honor of being the Grand Marshal for Hollywood Christmas Parade.</p>
<p>“I am honored and very grateful to be chosen as Grand Marshal of the Hollywood Christmas Parade,” said Col. Paris D. Davis in a statement. “I am especially pleased that this wonderful annual tradition raises awareness of the important work that <em>Marine Toys for Tots</em> are doing to bring gifts and holiday cheer to those less fortunate.”</p>
<p>On March 3, 2023, Col. Davis received the Medal of Honor for his actions on June, 18 1965 during the Vietnam War when he led a group of South Vietnamese forces and American soldiers during a nighttime raid and rescued several injured soldiers on the battlefield (while suffering several gunshot wounds himself). The Medal of Honor, created during Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, is our country’s highest military award, recognizing gallantry above and beyond the call of duty.</p>
<p>“The parade also brings goodwill to people from all walks of life throughout the world,” added Col. Davis. “It’s a good reminder about what America stands for, who we are, and all that we can accomplish when we come together.”</p>

<p>Founded in 1947, <a class="color-link" title="https://www.toysfortots.org/" href="https://www.toysfortots.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" data-ga-track="ExternalLink:https://www.toysfortots.org/" aria-label="Marine Toys for Tots"><em data-ga-track="ExternalLink:https://www.toysfortots.org/">Marine Toys for Tots</em></a> delivers, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming “responsible, productive, and patriotic citizens.” It began as a charitable event in Los Angeles and, in 2022, raised a reported (and unprecedented) 24.4 million toys, books and games, among other items, to a reported 9.9 million children.</p>
<p>In recent years, <em>Marine Toys for Tots</em> has expanded to support children and families in need throughout the year.</p>
<p>“We have been with <em>The</em> <em>Hollywood Christmas Parade</em> for about a decade now, and it is extremely beneficial for us in exposing our brand and our mission,” said General James B. Laster, CEO of the <em>Marine Toys for Tots</em> Foundation. “The <em>Toys for Tots</em> program started in Christmas of 1947 when a group of reserve marines in Los Angeles got together and decided they wanted to do something to help economically disadvantaged children and their community. Many of those children were war orphans. When the word got out, it started spreading and by 1948 almost all reserve units had a similar program.”</p>

<p>In an interesting footnote, Bill Hendricks, who worked in the film industry, was the commander of the reserve unit that started <em>Marine Toys for Tots</em>. After he met the legendary Walt Disney and told him about the initiative behind the program, it was Disney who came up with the name <em>Toys for Tots</em> and the three little train cars in the logo.</p>
<p>There are two arms of the <em>Marine Toys for Tots</em>. The first is the Marine Core Reserves, who do the so-called “heavy lifting” during the holiday season. The second is the foundation that works year-round to oversee the logistics and the fundraising. Once General Laster took over the foundation in January 2020, the year-round literacy program was expanded to include the charity arm outside of just Christmas.</p>
<p>“Our new theme is a ‘year-round force for good,’ which includes a foster child program,” noted General Laster. “And <em>The</em> <em>Hollywood Christmas Parade</em> is a wonderful venue to educate and inform the American people and the public about what we do.”</p>
