Climate change is no longer just about the environment; it is costing us money. As the planet warms, extreme weather events like storms, floods, droughts, and wildfires are becoming more common and destructive. These disasters damage homes, roads, and businesses, leading to huge repair bills. Insurance costs are rising as well. With more claims after climate related disasters, insurers increase premiums, making it more expensive for families and businesses to stay protected. Climate change disrupts trade. In 2022, severe drought in Europe made major rivers too shallow for cargo ships, delaying deliveries of fuel and other goods and slowing economic activity across several countries. Moving to renewable energy such as wind, solar, and hydro can create jobs, attract investment, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Choosing clean energy is not only good for the planet but also a smart economic strategy.

Ways we can protect our families and homes during the upcoming holiday season include:

Pulling over for the night to rest, waiting out poor driving conditions, and securing a sober ride are excellent examples of dynamic risk management; Inclement weather, fatigue, or drinking and driving can disrupt the best of holiday plans.

Trash can make you a target: www.usar.army.mil

Boxes from items like jewelry or electronics left curbside for trash collection provide good indicators to potential burglars about what high-value items are located in the house.

Don’t broadcast your activities over the Internet. Criminals troll through pages hoping to find tips and clues on empty houses. Posts on social media sites about an upcoming vacation can be an invitation to someone looking to burglarize your home.

Preparing food:

Fully thaw your turkey before lowering it into a turkey frier. A frozen turkey and boiling hot oil are a recipe for a fire. Make sure all friers and grills are at least 20 feet from the house and not under the porch roofs or around combustibles. Have a fire extinguisher nearby to be ready for an unexpected fire.

Make sure to refrigerate cooked foods within 2 hours to avoid the growth of bacteria. Consume refrigerated leftovers within 4 days.

The holiday season is one of the most special times of the year for the Army Reserve with Soldiers and their families celebrating their own unique traditions. Many of us are eager to catch up on travel and precious time with family and friends. However, we can all do our part to avoid unnecessary risk, since they can become more prevalent when distracted by holiday activities.

Whether you’re planning to stay home and host for the holidays or travel to be with your loved ones, getting tips from an expert can make for a smooth holiday season. One of those experts is Michael Tulley, U.S. Army Reserve Command (USARC) Safety Director, whose career is focused on mitigating risk. Through his experiences in service as a Soldier, and now a Civilian, Mr. Tulley knows firsthand that continuously reassessing hazards and adjusting mitigation strategies as conditions change is just as effective off duty as it is during a mission.

There are many ways we can protect our families and homes during the upcoming holiday season including:

Planning and ensuring the car is safe before and during road trips

Practicing safety as you decorate

Following food safety standards in cooking and storing foods

Discreetly disposing of trash from high-value items

Being mindful of social media posts about upcoming travel

Lessons from the U.S. Army Reserve
October is Energy Action Month. It’s the time of year when we turn our attention toward the importance of energy conservation and resiliency. The call to save energy can reach everyone this October, from Soldiers to civilian employees to families. The U.S. Army Reserve is leading that call because conservation advances their mission, protects communities and empowers Soldiers to charge ahead.

From the electricity that powers Army Reserve facilities, to the fuel that powers their vehicles, energy touches nearly every aspect of the Army Reserve’s mission. Conserving power can help protect our energy future.

However, we all face threats to our energy security; from increasing global demands to natural disasters, fluctuating fuel costs and innovative adversarial attacks like cyber weapons. Conservation helps ensure Soldiers have the energy they need, when and where they need it, to accomplish their missions – at home and abroad, now and in the future. The Army Reserve is also focused on prioritizing energy and water security requirements to ensure Soldiers always have available, reliable power and water to continuously sustain critical missions.

Energy Action Month is an opportunity for the Army Reserve Energy Program to help the public understand the important role everyone can play in energy conservation and resiliency and offer practical, smart energy tips that everyone can implement in their daily lives.
Simple ways for everyone to reduce their energy footprint include:
Weathering your home to eliminate air leaks and adding insulation
 Replacing your incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) or light emitting diodes (LEDs)
 Creating a more energy efficient office by using natural light wherever possible
 Powering down computer monitors at end of each day
 Unplugging electronics that aren’t in use for extended periods and using power strips
 Recycle packaging materials like paper and cardboard, as we continue to increase shipping supplies to our homes

COL Martin Naranjo, Director of Army Reserve Installation Management Directorate will be available to help your audience learn more about reducing their carbon footprint. COL Naranjo will also discuss the energy conservation innovations employed by the U.S. Army Reserve and how the public can similarly do their part to reduce energy waste.
We All Play a Part in Energy Conservation

 Weathering your home to eliminate air leaks and adding insulation
 Replacing your incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) or light emitting diodes (LEDs)
 Creating a more energy efficient office by using natural light wherever possible
 Powering down computer monitors at end of each day
 Unplugging electronics that aren’t in use for extended periods and using power strips
 Recycle packaging materials like paper and cardboard, as we continue to increase shipping supplies to our homes
 Adjusting your thermostat to 68 degrees during the fall and winter and 78 degrees in the spring and summer

Colonel Daniel Cederman, Director, Army Reserve Installation Management Directorate will be available to help your audience learn more about reducing their carbon footprint. COL Cederman will also discuss the energy conservation innovations employed by the U.S. Army Reserve and how the public can similarly do their part to reduce energy waste.

This unusual therapist is bringing joy to patients…
In the most unexpected way
Peyo is a 14-year-old stallion…
Living a normal horse’s life
Just like any other horse, he loves to run and play…
But one thing separates him from most horses…
He has an incredible aptitude towards humans
Especially those who are sick
2 times a month, he visits hospitals and residential homes
This helps boost morale…
And brings smiles to those who need it most
Peyo will be fiery in a meadow…
But in here he behaves with the zenith of a Buddhist monk
No one forces Peyo to go anywhere…
He decides himself which rooms he wants to go in
And he seems to have a sixth sense where he’s needed the most
This man is dying…
With little time left…
And with issues communicating
But when Peyo went into his room…
They had an immediate connection
The doctors were in awe…
When they saw this man glow in a way they never had before
But accept that everything doesn’t have to have an explanation
Care home staff say the visits have an…
“extraordinary positive effect” on the residents
Peyo’s handler Hassen is always with him…
As they go around…
Improving everyone’s mood …
And general well-being
Share to honor this very special horse!

Puerto Rico braced for potentially calamitous flash flooding after being pummeled by Hurricane Maria which devastated the island and knocked out the entire electricity grid. The hurricane, which Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello called “the most devastating storm in a century,” had battered the island of 3.4 million people after roaring ashore early Wednesday with deadly winds and heavy rain.

Amy Chalfy of JASA shares the Good News of JASA and concern about Elder Abuse and how they help make the lives of Seniors better all around to age in place.

Amy Chalfy of JASA shares the Good News of JASA, Good News thanks JASA for doing such important work for years. According to the latest statistics from the NYC Department for the Aging, more than 18 percent, (over 1.52 million) of New Yorkers are over the age of 60. And this number is growing daily as the Boomer generation becomes the Senior population. To commemorate this wide and varied group, and to continue providing services and activities to keep them engaged, vital and cared for, JASA, one of New York’s largest and most trusted agencies serving more than 43,000 older adults in the New York metropolitan area, will host its annual Celebrating Seniors fundraiser on Tuesday, May 10. The Cocktail Reception will take place at 583 Park Avenue from 6 to 8 p.m. and we invite you to attend.

The Emcee for the evening is Jane Marsh, internationally acclaimed soprano and Artistic Advisor of the Metropolitan Opera Guild; the special celebrity guest is NBA legend, John Starks and, leading the bidding for the third year is Christie’s auctioneer extraordinaire, Toby Usnik. Also of particular note, is guest speaker Philip C. Marshall, elder-justice advocate and grandson of Brooke Astor. Mr. Marshall is a speaker in demand, whose work is particularly relevant and aligned with JASA’s service to the city’s more vulnerable seniors.
We would be happy to arrange an interview at the event with JASA’s special guests to discuss their commitment to the organization’s work, or with a JASA representative who can speak to you about the agency’s important role in a city that’s home to a senior population with a wide range of needs.

Event details for your readers who may wish to attend:
• Location: 583 Park Avenue, (corner of East 63rd Street) New York, NY Cost: Tickets are $500 and sponsorship packages are available.
• Dress: Business attire is preferred.
• For more information and tickets: visit www.jasa.org or contact development@jasa.org or call 212.273.5320.
THE PEACE CENTER’S 35TH ANNIVERSARY ON MAY 22

The Peace Center, located in Langhorne of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, has started its #SPEAKUPFORPEACE campaign to give people a space and a voice in creating the kind of community we all wish to live and work in. Kicking off its 35th anniversary celebration, the Peace Center is inviting people of all ages to participate in forming the largest human peace sign on Sunday, May 22 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Bucks County Community College, 275 Swamp Road, Newtown, PA. People will assemble in a football-size field near the faculty parking lot, which is located next to Tyler State Park. A $1 donation is suggested.

Barbara Simmons, executive director of The Peace Center, said, “We want young people to both see and hear a message – one of kindness, compassion and service to our community. Our goal is to attract about 6,000 people to be part of the human peace sign.”

Simmons said, “It is not just about breaking a world record. This is an opportunity for us all to stand as one to support peacemaking efforts in our community, to embrace our humanity with a conscious effort to make peace a priority in our homes and our schools.”

This is a year-long effort to hold events throughout the year to include: workshops, dialogues, forums and opportunities to Speak Up for Peace.

Peace Center Board Member Cory Amsler said, “The Human Peace Sign effort is an opportunity to make a positive, creative statement at a time when there is too much anger and intolerance- not from a distance on social media, but publicly and in person with your friends and neighbors. It’s about finding community and common purpose with your fellow human beings.”

The Peace Center is a non-profit organization serving the community since 1982. It educates, empowers, and supports individuals, family, schools and organizations with efforts to prevent violence, promote peaceful resolution of conflict, and foster inclusive, equitable and safe communities. Programs are offered in conflict resolution, mediation, family empowerment, respect for self and others in an effort to reduce violence, bullying, cyber-bullying, relational aggression, racism, intolerance and inequality.

People are asked to use social media to help encourage thousands to be part of the Human Peace Sign. Please follow The Peace Center on Twitter and Instagram: The_Peace_Center
This article was written by Somini Sengupta for the New York Times.

UNITED NATIONS —Nearly 60 million people have been driven from their homes by war and persecution, an unprecedented global exodus that has burdened fragile countries with waves of newcomers and littered deserts and seas with the bodies of those who died trying to reach safety.

The new figures, released Thursday by the United Nations refugee agency, paint a staggering picture of a world where new conflicts are erupting and old ones are refusing to subside, driving up the total number of displaced people to a record 59.5 million by the end of 2014, the most recent year tallied.

Half of the displaced are children.

Nearly 14 million people were newly displaced in 2014, according to the annual report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. In other words, tens of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes every day and “seek PROTECTION elsewhere” last year, the report found.

That included 11 million people who scattered within the borders of their own countries, the highest figure ever recorded in the agency’s 50-year history.

Tens of millions of others fled in previous years and remain stuck, sometimes for decades, unable to go home or find a permanent new one, according to the refugee agency. They include the more than 2.5 million displaced in the Darfur region of Sudan, and the 1.5 million Afghans still living in Pakistan.

When refugees flee their own countries, most of them wind up in the world’s less-developed nations, with Turkey, Iran and Pakistan hosting the largest numbers.

One in four refugees now finds shelter in the world’s poorest countries, with Ethiopia and Kenya taking many more refugees than, say, Britain and France.

As the report states, “the global distribution of refugees remains heavily skewed away from wealthier nations and towards the less wealthy.”

Even so, there has been a sharp backlash in European capitals against the waves of people coming across the Mediterranean Sea, including many who are fleeing conflict and repression in countries like Syria and Eritrea.

For now, the European Union has shelved its plans to GET APPROVAL from the United Nations Security Council to target human smugglers who operate in lawless Libya and to destroy the ships they use to bring migrants across the sea.

Instead, the European Union is scheduled to meet on Monday to discuss whether it will start military operations in the international waters of the Mediterranean Sea, for which it does not need the Council’s blessings.

European Union leaders are still squabbling with one another over how to split up at least 40,000 asylum seekers across their 28 member states. And they have stepped up search-and-rescue operations after intense public pressure stemming from a sharp increase in the deaths of migrants crossing the Mediterranean this year.

Australia has felt no such compunction. Its prime minister, Tony Abbott, has pledged to turn around migrant boats before they enter Australian territorial waters, including those with minority Rohingyas fleeing persecution in Myanmar. His administration faces scrutiny over allegations that it paid smugglers to turn a boat back to Indonesia after it was intercepted on the high seas.

“For an age of unprecedented mass displacement, we need an unprecedented humanitarian response and a renewed global commitment to tolerance and PROTECTION for people fleeing conflict and persecution,” António Guterres, the high commissioner for refugees, said in a statement accompanying the annual report.

Amnesty International, in a report issued this week, accused governments and smugglers alike of pursuing “selfish political interests instead of showing basic human compassion.”

The United States offers permanent resettlement to roughly 70,000 refugees each year, though its plans to admit 2,000 Syrian refugees this year have drawn scrutiny from Republican lawmakers who worry that some among them might be terrorists.

The war in Syria is the largest source of displacement. By the end of 2014, 7.6 million Syrians were displaced within the country itself, and nearly another 3.9 million were refugees living outside the war-torn nation.

But Syria is the not the only country where conflict is forcing people to flee. The latest of 15 new conflicts to erupt in the last five years have arisen in Burundi and Yemen.

Older conflicts, like the ones in Somalia and Afghanistan, are nowhere close to a lasting peace, which means that refugees and internally displaced people remain in limbo for years.

The agency said that in 2014, fewer than 127,000 refugees returned home, the lowest number in 31 years.

Those who live in refugee camps are extremely vulnerable to hunger, UNEMPLOYMENT and sexual violence, if they make it to one at all.

“We don’t have the capacity and we don’t have the resources to support all the victims of conflict around the world and to provide them with the very minimal level of PROTECTION and assistance,” Mr. Guterres told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday.

The nearly 60 million displaced people across the globe are, of course, not the only ones who have left their homes because of hardship. The refugee agency’s numbers include only those who say they have fled conflict and persecution, not poverty or lack of economic opportunity.

Often, refugee experts say, life is more complicated than that. People flee their homes for a host of entangled reasons, including hunger, gang violence, or even the havoc climate change wreaks on local economies.

Many migrants who are not strictly fleeing conflict take as many risks in their search for a better life.

Over the weekend came evidence of how dangerous their journey can be. The International Organization for Migration said on Wednesday that it had found the remains of more than two dozen people, mostly West Africans, who apparently got lost in a sandstorm in Niger and then died of heat and thirst near the border with Algeria.

European Union officials, including the bloc’s foreign minister, Federica Mogherini, met with African foreign ministers in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss ways to help countries of the region tackle migration and youth UNEMPLOYMENT.
