The CW’s Christmas Gift: Family Films as the Next Entertainment Trend

After three years of hard work, and increasing anticipation from advocates of family entertainment

around the world, the Family Film Awards (FFA) will be broadcast on The CW, the giant entertainment channel in the United States, during Prime Time (8:00-10:00 pm) on December 26^th, 2022.

Many in the entertainment industry are comparing this event to the American concept of a Spring Festival; they believe that it will change the American conception of “home viewing” in the post-pandemic era for the better. A new Hollywood game-changer has emerged: films that represent our best aspirations, shown in a domestic setting, and watched by parents and children in “active togetherness” rather than “passive togetherness.”

The Family Film Awards have emerged on the world’s biggest holiday—Christmas—with an audience to match. Over the next month, the Awards will be syndicated on 100 major U.S. television stations. It will be broadcast on the world’s largest online entertainment platforms—including Netflix, Apple, HBO Max, and Hulu—reaching more than 300 million viewers directly, and more than a billion indirectly.

Such exposure establishes the Family Film Awards as a huge event in international entertainment and comes after three years of pandemic-related slowdowns and lockdowns.

The Focus is now on Family.

The world finally has a family-themed film award based on professional standards of evaluation—an event to celebrate. Three years ago, we had no idea that a global epidemic would hit out of nowhere, preventing us from interacting socially and leaving loved ones and relatives looking at each other across barriers, both physical and social. We have seen repeated outbreaks of disease, conflict, economic stagnation, and inflation. Many have been displaced. Others have lost their homes.

The Awards were established in 1996 with the support of President Clinton; however, Hollywood already had the star-studded Oscars, as well as the Golden Globes, the Emmys and the Grammys. An Awards show that celebrated Family had arrived at a time when family entertainment was waning in popularity, and its subsequent impact was negligible.

Given these circumstances, the insightful Chinese entrepreneur, Ms. Ma Xiaoqiu, saw how the zeitgeist was changing. Three years ago, she decided to purchase the Event and invest in the re-creation of the

American Family Film Awards. Today, we see people longing for a return to the concepts of place and home, both as members of a particular family and members of a world family. The right time has finally arrived.

A Disaster can make a nation as well as destroy one. Perhaps the catastrophe of the epidemic has awakened in each of us an innate sense of sincerity and bonding. Fame and profit are not, and should not be, the ultimate goal of living in this world. The heroine in the script of “Never Say Die” experiences a series of hardships, and almost became homeless, but the instinct to create a home environment for her daughter raised her up, and she never looked back. In this way, Ms. Ma finally stood at the pinnacle of success in a male-dominated business and capital markets. She became the Chair of the Board of Directors of four listed companies in Hong Kong. A unique view of how to do business in the service of humanistic values led to a rewarding life for her, her colleagues and her family.

Now she has taken a largely defunct film awards show and made it into an international Hollywood brand.

Traditionally, the family has been understood to be a unit of society based on marriage, birth, and adoption.  That understanding has evolved into diverse communities, including same-sex and opposite-sex marriages, as well as other cultural aspects of integration. The concept of family is expanding. In the light of the past three years, people need a new, re-defined concept of family that can weather such storms in the future.

Home – it is a precious and cherished reality for many. Yet for decades, the most prominent films

have often been themed around violence and conflict, stereotypical good guys, bad guys, and win-lose battles.  A hunger exists for the return of films such as “Forrest Gump,” which reflect a deep regard for parents, relatives, and children. In theaters, when the white feather floats into the blue

sky to the music of a quartet, the audience breaks into applause and genuine emotion. No wonder Tom Hanks was awarded the first Family Film Award in 1996. At that time, he said: “It’s not easy to make a good movie; it’s even harder to make a family film that the whole family will enjoy.”

Indeed, this year’s Family Film Awards foreshadow a direction for entertainment in

2023. A new standard is about to return, giving new hope for friends of quality film-making in the entertainment world. Producers and investors know the value of investing in films that celebrate human relationships in a complicated world. No huge amounts of cash burned in special effects and gaudy distractions!

The Family Film Awards sends Greetings to audiences around the world. These Awards represent the re-birth of films about human beings and their relationships.

For 2023, the Focus is on the Family once more.

Album & Accompanying Booklet to Release on July 6th, Honoring His Holiness’ 85th Birthday

June 9th, 2020 – As announced today, Khandro Music will release a unique album of mantras and teachings by The Dalai Lama set to music, entitled Inner World. Released to honor his 85th birthday celebrations on July 6th, 2020, the album will be a great dedication to the decades of his vision and work for world peace and educating the heart.

When asked why he accepted the request to make the album, he answered, “The very purpose of my life
is to serve as much as I can.” He also added, “Music can help people in a way that I can’t.”

Inner World is an offering of the Dalai Lama reciting mantras and giving short teachings all woven to a bed of music (please see tracklisting below). The album will be released in conjunction with an Inner World companion booklet, revealing the benefits of the mantras written by Venerable Robina Courtin, and exclusive, stunning artwork; a collaboration between the acclaimed New Zealand duo of Ella Brewer (classically trained Thanka Painter) and Tiffany Singh (an award-winning visual artist). This particular work of theirs is a combination of traditional Tibetan and contemporary art.

In addition to this announcement today, Inner World has debuted the first offering from the project, the “Compassion” mantra, one of the most famous Buddhist prayers. Reciting
the mantra of the Buddha of Compassion (known in Tibetan as Chenrezig and in Sanskrit as Avalokiteshvara) is said to open our hearts and bring us closer to others, to feel love and compassion through wisdom, generating a desire to help.

The origins of Inner World began in 2015, when one of the project’s co-executive producers and a longtime student of The Dalai Lama, Junelle Kunin, wrote to him requesting his participation, by fervently explaining her feelings that an album by such a compassionate and wise being would help people particularly who struggle with emotional stress. After reading her letter, his response was enthusiastic, saying, “This will benefit many people!”. She and her husband Abraham Kunin, both from New Zealand, spent the next five years working with a small team to bring the project to life. The Dalai Lama’s recordings have been thread through music composed by Abraham and performed on thirty-plus instruments by himself and a cast of collaborators from around the world, including a special guest performance from Anoushka Shankar on “Ama La.” The composer integrated the live performances with artful programming and production, building a peaceful bedrock for these sacred offerings.

Net proceeds from the sales of Inner World will go to The Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama (Switzerland) chosen program: Social, Emotional and Ethical Learning (SEE Learning), an international K-12 education program and part of an academic collaboration between Emory University and His Holiness; and Mind and Life Institute, which brings science & contemplative wisdom together to better understand the mind & create positive change in the world.

We all need to do forgiveness work. Anyone who has a problem with loving themselves is stuck in this area. Forgiveness opens our hearts to self-love. Many of us carry grudges for years and years. We feel self-righteous because of what they did to us. I call this being stuck in the prison of self-righteous resentment. We get to be right. We never get to be happy.

You may say, “But you don’t know what they did to me; it’s unforgiveable.” Being unwilling to forgive is a terrible thing to do to yourself. Bitterness is like swallowing a teaspoon of poison every day. It accumulates and harms you. It’s impossible to be healthy and free when you keep yourself bound to the past. The incident is long gone and over with. Yes, it’s true that they didn’t behave well. However, it’s over. You might feel that if you forgive them, then you’re saying that what they did to you was okay.

One of our biggest spiritual lessons is to understand that everyone is doing the best they can at any given moment. People can only do so much with the understanding, awareness, and knowledge that they have. Invariably, anyone who mistreats someone was mistreated themselves as a child. The greater the violence, the greater their own inner pain, and the more they may lash out. This is not to say that their behavior is acceptable or excusable. However, for our own spiritual growth, we must be aware of their pain.

The person who is the hardest to forgive is the one who can teach you the greatest lessons. When you love yourself enough to rise above the old situation, then understanding and forgiveness will be easy. And you’ll be free. Does freedom frighten you? Does it feel safer to be stuck in your old resentment and bitterness?

Mirror Work

Sit in front of your mirror. Close your eyes, and breathe deeply several times. Think of the many people who have hurt you in your life. Let them pass through your mind. Now open your eyes and begin talking to one of them.

Say something like: “You’ve hurt me deeply. However, I won’t stay stuck in the past any longer. I am willing to forgive you.” Take a breath and then say, “I forgive you, and I set you free.” Breathe again and say, “You are free, and I am free.”

Notice how you feel. You may feel resistance, or you may feel clear. If you feel resistance, just breathe and say, “I am willing to release all resistance.”

This may be a day when you can forgive several people. It may be a day when you can forgive only one. It doesn’t matter. No matter how you’re doing this exercise, it’s perfect for you. Forgiveness can be like peeling away the layers of an onion. If there are too many layers, put the onion away for a day. You can always come back and peel another layer. Acknowledge yourself for being willing to even begin this exercise.

As you continue to do this exercise, you’ll find burdens melting off your shoulders. You may be surprised by the amount of old baggage you’ve been carrying. Be gentle with yourself as you go through the cleansing process.
