Celebrates Diversity in Film February 22-March 3, 2018
The Festival showcases films from emerging filmmakers from around the world in all genres, with a special emphasis on highlighting the work of women and under-represented filmmakers. The 93 Official Selections are a diverse mixture of 13 Animated films, 13 Documentaries, 10 Feature narratives, 8 Horror films, 9 Music Videos, 31 Narrative shorts and 7 Web series. These include 21 student films and 32 first-time filmmakers. Filmmakers come from 31 countries; 40% of the films were created by women, 43% were created by people of color. Carl Goodman, Executive Director of Museum of the Moving Image will accept the2018 Patron of the Cinema Award at the Awards Ceremony being held on Saturday, March 3rd 2018. Venue TBA. He has worked at the Museum of the Moving Image for more than 25 years; since his appointment as Executive Director in 2011, the museum has seen a three-fold increase in annual attendance. Celebration of Women in Film Tuesday Feb 27 all day at Cinema Village. The daylong celebration of women in film, includes an afternoon matinee of shorts by women, a discussion panel on Resources for Women Filmmakers, with NYU Women’s Initiative, NYWIFT, WIM and WMM, followed by an evening double feature of films directed by women, “To A More Perfect Union” and feature from Turkey “My name is Batlir, not Butler” by Stare’ Yıldırım. Both filmmakers will be in attendance.

As Immigration/Refugees
Remain Top Priority for Lawmakers

There has been ongoing debate over the issue of immigration and refugees for many months here in the U.S. and around the world.

And in June, there is a day dedicated to refugees — to raise awareness to their needs and plight, realizing the horrors they have endured in leaving their homeland to find a safe place to live. It’s a time to try to work together to ensure every refugee child gets an education, every family has a safe place to call home and every refugee can work or learn new skills to make a positive contribution to their community.

And now, thousands of refugees are also united by one flag. An orange and black flag inspired by the life vests most all had to wear in their search for a safer land to live. It’s been designed and made by a Syrian refugee and artist who currently lives in Amsterdam.

The idea for the flag began by a group known as the The Refugee Nation, after the first ever Olympic team made up of refugees competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. While the flag has not yet been sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee, The Refugee Nation wants to give those from foreign nations a symbol of unity and identity that they can call their own.

Right now, refugees are asking for the public’s support in their efforts to resettle. Everyone can help by buying and displaying this special flag and help the refugees adjust to their new surroundings in the U.S.
