The Red Cross provides in-person support for troops around the world including:

On all military installations in the U.S.
At 37 overseas offices, including those in England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, South Korea, Djibouti, Iraq, Kuwait, Poland and Romania.
At over 140 military medical facilities and 170 veterans care facilities worldwide.

Each year, the Red Cross provides around 510,000 services to members of the military, veterans and their families around the world. None of these services would be possible without a global network of dedicated volunteers who turn their military appreciation into action. The Red Cross encourages people interested in volunteering to sign up at redcross.org/volunteer or reach out to their local Red Cross chapter for opportunities to get started today.

Through their ‘Get To Know Us Before You Need Us’ program, the Red Cross meets with new enlistees and their families to answer questions about military family life and share how their services can help before, during and after deployment.

In times of emergency, the organization helps military families communicate with their loved ones and facilitate their return home through their Hero Care Network, which is available online, by phone, through the Red Cross mobile app or in person, 24 hours a day.

The nonprofit also offers a variety of free resiliency workshops in-person and online, to provide military members, veterans, their families and caregivers with effective tools for facing challenges and stress.

Red Cross medical and non-medical volunteers provide care, comfort and therapy items at veteran hospitals and military treatment facilities around the world.

New York City will purchase millions of dollars of medical debt and then erase it in effort to help as many as 500,000 residents, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday.

The program involves partnering with a nonprofit organization, RIP Medical Debt, that buys unpaid medical debt from hospitals at a steep discount and then clears it. The city will invest $18 million to relieve more than $2 billion in medical debt for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, Adams said.

Affected New Yorkers will be notified that their medical debt has been relieved, as there is no application process for the one-time debt relief program, which will launch early this year and run for three years.

“No one chooses to go into medical debt — if you’re sick or injured, you need to seek care. But no New Yorker should have to choose between paying rent or for other essentials and paying off their medical debt,” Adams said in a statement.

The program is aimed at New Yorkers whose unpaid medical bills are at least 5% of their annual household income or those in households with an income under four times the federal poverty line, which is $31,200 for a family of four.

Medical debt is the single-largest cause of bankruptcy in the United States, and disproportionately affects low-income Americans and those without health insurance or who are underinsured.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul in December signed legislation that bars health care professionals and ambulances from reporting medical debt to credit agencies.

A New York charity started in 2014, RIP Medical has abolished more than $10.4 billion in medical debt for more than 7 million people since its inception, according to its website.

C. difficile infection (C. diff infection) is a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes half a million illnesses and tens of thousands of deaths in the U.S. each year. Yet, few people know what it is and how it occurs, despite being declared a public health threat by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).1-3

C. diff infection causes debilitating symptoms such as severe diarrhea, fever, stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea and colitis.1 This infection can happen to anyone, at any age, and can be contracted in some of the most common places in the community and in hospitals.4-6 When the infection strikes, it can have a devastating impact on everyday life, including taking care of loved ones, going to work regularly and carrying out typical activities. And C. diff infection can come back – known as a recurrence.

Antibiotics – the current standard of care for treatment of C. diff infection – treat the disease but also can be a contributing factor to the cycle of recurrence.1,7 It has been estimated that up to 35% of C. diff infection cases can recur after the initial diagnosis8-11, and after first recurrence up to 65% may develop a subsequent recurrence.11,12

Recently, the FDA approved a first-of-its-kind microbiome-based treatment to prevent recurrent C. diff infection after completing antibiotics for recurrent C. diff infection.

Paul Feuerstadt, M.D., Yale University School of Medicine, will discuss:
• What is C. diff infection and who is vulnerable to contracting it
• Why does this infection recur and what are the consequences of recurrence
• What are the treatment options for recurrent C. diff infection
• How has the newest FDA-approved treatment changed how recurrent C. diff infection may be treated

Chief Warrant Officer 5 Nelligan assumed the duties as the 8th Command Chief Warrant Officer of the United States Army Reserve Command, United States Army Reserve on March 31, 2021. In this position, he is responsible for all Army Reserve Warrant Officers within the Army Reserve Command.

His previous duty was the 6th Command Chief Warrant Officer of the Army Reserve Medical Command, United States Army Reserve October 2018 to March 2021. 2nd Command Chief Warrant Officer of the 75th Innovations Command, United

CW5 Nelligan enlisted in the Army in March 1982, completing Basic Training and Field Artillery Cannon Crewman (OSUT) at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was assigned

to the 3/35th Field Artillery (8” self-propelled) West Germany, where he served as an Advanced Party, Gun Driver, and Battery Commander’s Driver. He left active duty in 1984 and joined the 340th General Hospital and was sent to the United States Army Medical Equipment and Optical School, Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center to become a medical equipment repairman from which he completed both the basic and advanced courses and was named honor graduate. He has served
in Honduras and Guatemala providing medical equipment maintenance support to each respective task force. In June of 1990 he was appointed as a WO1, Health Services Maintenance Technician in July 1990 and was assigned to the 819th Station Hospital which converted to the 405th Combat Support Hospital in 1992.

He was activated in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and deployed to
Kuwait in 2002. His assignments included Property Book Officer, Supply and Services Officer, and Unit Logistician (Forward).

The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center, Inc., Eastern Long Island’s only wildlife hospital, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of wild animals impacted by human encroachment on their habitat. It is a grass-roots organization that began with a few concerned friends and has grown to include over 3,000 members and supporters. The center operates as a full-service professional wildlife hospital, with licensed rehabilitators, biologists, animal behaviorists, and volunteers on staff. More than 300 people have been trained to help with wildlife rescues. The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center is located on Munn’s Pond Park through a cooperative licensing agreement with Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. This ecosystem is one-of-a-kind and irreplaceable, with salt and freshwater wetlands, Pine Barrens, deciduous forest, and meadowland. There are no ambient noises or smells to stress the wildlife that is recovering within, unlike a veterinary hospital. Every year, the Wildlife Rescue Center receives over 10,000 calls for information or assistance regarding wild animal encounters. In addition, the center offers educational programs to local elementary and secondary schools. Local college students participate in cooperative education programs and internships. One 27-year-old Syrian woman, identifiable as “G” made her way to the Israeli side of the border of the Golan Heights seeking medical care for her son who had been wounded in the fighting.

After the IDF treated her son, G wrote a letter of appreciation to Israel lamenting the “tragic situation in Syria” and expressing her yearning for peace and the prevention of further bloodshed.

“Syria was the most beautiful country of all Arab countries. We thought that Israel was our enemy, but we realized that it’s good to us. I want to thank the hospitals in Israel and the Israeli army for all its help to the … Syrian children,” she wrote.

While Israeli field hospitals have existed for years, an operation was launched in June 2016 by the 210th division of the Northern Command dubbed “Operation Good Neighbor” aimed at providing relief to civilians lacking any alternative, whose medical services and infrastructure have been almost entirely obliterated by the carnage.

Since 2011, around half a million Syrians have been killed in the civil war. Another two million have been wounded and some six million have been made homeless. (Article from Ynet News, October 9, 2017).
