Catherine Hicks, the mother from 7th Heaven. She is launching a new initiative call Safeguard My Meds, which discusses how proper storage of prescription medicine can reduce the risk of medicine misuse and abuse. This is a timely topic with the DEAs drug take back program as well as October being recognized at National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month.

To help prevent from falling into the wrong hands, actress and parent advocate Catherine Hicks has joined forces with the National Community Pharmacists Association and Purdue Pharma to spearhead a new national education campaign called Safeguard My Meds. Catherine is urging parents, grandparents and other family members to learn how to properly store and dispose of prescription medicines and to start making a difference right now.

When used as directed, prescription medicines play an important role in treating a range of medical conditions. Yet many people dont realize that the personal responsibility of having prescription medicine in the home means keeping it safely stored. Unused and easily accessible medicines have the potential to be misused and abused by anyone entering your home including teens and young adults.

As a parent of a teenager, Catherine knows how important this issue is. Statistics show that 70% of people age 12 and older who abused prescription pain relievers say they got them from a friend or relative. Whats more, one in five U.S. high school students say they have abused a prescription medicine at least once in their lives.

Knowledge is the key, and Catherine wants to share tips with your audience on how to safeguard prescription medicine, as well as discuss key learnings from a new national survey that sheds light on the state of medicine-storage habits in America. She will also unveil a new online resource www.safeguardmymeds.org that provides practical information and tools to help establish a medication-safe home.
