As April marks National Parkinson’s Awareness Month, Dr. Joohi Jimnez- Shahed, (Joo-He Ha-Men-Is Sha-head) MD, movement disorders neurologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, New York and a patient living with PD Jeff will discuss the latest technology surrounding DBS and how it can help improve or relieve movement symptoms of Parkinson’s. They’ll also talk about how to know if deep brain stimulation is right for others with PD and the impact of the disease on those living with it.</p>

<p>April is National Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month<br />
New Advances In Technology can Help Those with Parkinson’s</p>
<p>Every single year, approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement.</p>
<p>Many Parkinson&#8217;s disease symptoms involve losing the ability to control your muscles and movement, making daily activities like performing at work, writing and even getting dressed difficult or even impossible. This loss of movement control and reliance on others can make people feel as though they are missing out on important aspects of life and relationships with spouses, family and friends.</p>
<p>When Parkinson’s medications still work but become less effective, deep brain stimulation therapy, or DBS Therapy, is a treatment option to help control some of the movement symptoms of Parkinson’s like shaking, slowed movement and stiffness.</p>
<p>DBS Therapy uses a small pacemaker-like device, placed under the skin of the chest, to send electrical signals through very thin wires to an area in the brain that controls movement. To provide relief, these signals block some of the brain messages that cause the movement symptoms of Parkinson’s.</p>
<p>For many people with Parkinson’s, DBS can offer a new lease on life, allowing them to live more independently and pursue their passions, whatever they may be.</p>

<p>THE ARMY’S NEW “H-2-F”, OR HOLISTIC HEALTH AND FITNESS SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO DO JUST THAT – IMPROVE NOT JUST PHYSICAL FITNESS LEVELS, BUT ALSO OVERALL MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL WELL-BEING.</p>
<p>HERE TO EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANCE OF THE H-2-F SYSTEM, FOR ARMY RESERVE SOLDIERS AND HOW IT CAN BE APPLIED FOR ALL AMERICANS, IS MASTER SERGEANT STACEY MUNOZ, A MASTER RESILIENCY TRAINER IN THE ARMY RESERVE WHOSE CIVILIAN EDUCATION INCLUDES AN ASSOCIATES IN EXERCISE SCIENCE FOCUSING ON NUTRITION AND PERSONAL TRAINING …</p>
<p>Bio Master Sergeant Stacey Munoz enlisted in the United States Army in 1998. She attended Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, SC. She served six years in the Regular Army and then transferred to the Army Reserve. After six months in the Army Reserve, MSG Munoz was picked up as an Active Guard Reserve.<br />
During her service, she has held multiple positions throughout human resources, operations, training, and leadership. Her stateside assignments include 2-6 Air Defense Artillery and 1-56 Air Defense Artillery at Fort Bliss, TX; Military Entrance Processing Station in Seattle, WA; 70th Regional Readiness Command in Fort Lawton, WA; 84th Training Command and Human Resources Command at Fort Knox, KY and United Started Army Reserve Command at Fort Bragg, NC. She deployed with 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom for 15 months.</p>
<p>Her military education includes Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, Primary Leadership Development Course (Honor Graduate), Basic NCO Course, Senior Leader Development Course, Airborne School, Modern Army Combative Program Level 1, Master Fitness Course, Master Resiliency Trainer Course level 1-3, Protocol Course Level 1-4. Her civilian education includes an Associates Exercise Science focusing on Nutrition and personal training from International Sports Science Association, CA.<br />
Her awards and decorations include Meritorious Service Medal (4th Award), Joint Service Commendation Medal (2nd Award), Army Commendation Medal (2nd Award), Army Achievement Medal (7th Award), Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NCO Professional Development (4th Award), Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Driver’s Badge, Airborne Badge, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Superior Unit Award.</p>
<p>MSG Munoz is originally from California and when not working, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, traveling and spending time with her husband, Tom and their 8 children in Southern Pines, NC.</p>

<p>Feeding an Army of hungry Soldiers requires serious planning, but keeping meals tasty and healthy takes a whole new level of talent, creativity, and skill.</p>
<p>Thankfully, U.S. Army chefs are a group of gifted culinary specialists following their passion for the culinary arts, while serving their country and providing fellow Soldiers with the proper food and nutrition they need to fuel their bodies and minds, optimize energy, and perform at their best.</p>
<p>The nutritious food Army chefs dish out to Soldiers is driven by the Army’s “Go For Green” program that labels food either green (fresh produce, whole grains, lean fish), yellow (seafood, red meat, pasta), or red (desserts, fried foods, cheeses) to make it easy for Soldiers to find high-performance foods and drinks that boost their fitness, strength, and health.</p>
<p>While the Army’s dining facilities may remind the average person of traditional cafeterias, menus are anything but standard cafeteria fare. The Army’s culinary specialists offer a savory and tasty dining experience with the familiar taste of home, boosting the morale of Soldiers around the world.</p>
<p>As the weather cools down, award-winning Army chef and Staff Sergeant (SSG) Samantha Poe is dishing up delectable fall favorites, including a delicious and healthy beet cake full of essential vitamins that can help with blood pressure and athletic performance, which helped lead the U.S. Army Culinary Arts Team to a silver medal at the 2020 World Culinary Olympics in Stuttgart, Germany. SSG Poe was also named the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Pastry Chef of the Year in 2019.</p>
<p>SSG Poe shares her healthy fall recipes with the American public, discuss how the “Go for Green” program provides for the well-being of Army Soldiers, along with great ideas for home chefs who are looking to bring healthy, tasty options to the table this season – for football games, family dinners, and beyond.</p>

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s been an uptick in the number of people working from home and across the U.S. adopting pets from animal shelters, and many others are also signing up to be temporary pet foster parents. Recent statistics show pet adoptions are up 100% from last year.</p>
<p>Pets can be a great, healthy addition to a family. Reports show that 78% of pet owners say their pets have improved their quality of life during this current social distancing period. For example, new and long-time pet owners are spending more time outside exercising with their pets, which is a great activity for everybody.</p>
<p>Just as our pets are keeping us healthy it’s important to return the favor by protecting your pets as you take them to dog parks or hiking trails, or even just extended walks around the neighborhood.</p>
<p>•	Fleas: even though we don’t often see them, just one flea can lay over 500 eggs in the first 21 days once they invade your do and then make their way into your home.<br />
•	Ticks: they are found in many of the places your dog likes to go, such as tall grass, trails and leaves and can transmit serious diseases.<br />
•	Mosquitos: a single bite from an infective mosquito can transmit heartworm disease.<br />
•	Contaminated Soil: hookworms and roundworms can live in a dog’s intestines and can be passed on to you.</p>

<p>Researchers are finding that thoughts like these, the hallmarks of people sometimes called “cockeyed optimists,” can do far more than raise one’s spirits. They may actually improve health and extend life.</p>
<p>There is no longer any doubt that what happens in the brain influences what happens in the body. When facing a health crisis, actively cultivating positive emotions can boost the immune system and counter depression. Studies have shown an indisputable link between having a positive outlook and health benefits like lower blood pressure, less heart disease, better weight control and healthier blood sugar levels.</p>
<p>Even when faced with an incurable illness, positive feelings and thoughts can greatly improve one’s quality of life. Dr. Wendy Schlessel Harpham, a Dallas-based author of several books for people facing cancer, including “Happiness in a Storm,” was a practicing internist when she learned she had non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system, 27 years ago. During the next 15 years of treatments for eight relapses of her cancer, she set the stage for happiness and hope, she says, by such measures as surrounding herself with people who lift her spirits, keeping a daily gratitude journal, doing something good for someone else, and watching funny, uplifting movies. Her cancer has been in remission now for 12 years.</p>
<p>“Fostering positive emotions helped make my life the best it could be,” Dr. Harpham said. “They made the tough times easier, even though they didn’t make any difference in my cancer cells.”</p>
<p>While Dr. Harpham may have a natural disposition to see the hopeful side of life even when the outlook is bleak, new research is demonstrating that people can learn skills that help them experience more positive emotions when faced with the severe stress of a life-threatening illness.</p>
<p>Judith T. Moskowitz, a professor of medical social sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, developed a set of eight skills to help foster positive emotions. In earlier research at the University of California, San Francisco, she and colleagues found that people with new diagnoses of H.I.V. infection who practiced these skills carried a lower load of the virus, were more likely to take their medication correctly, and were less likely to need antidepressants to help them cope with their illness.</p>
<p>The researchers studied 159 people who had recently learned they had H.I.V. and randomly assigned them to either a five-session positive emotions training course or five sessions of general support. Fifteen months past their H.I.V. diagnosis, those trained in the eight skills maintained higher levels of positive feelings and fewer negative thoughts related to their infection.</p>
<p>An important goal of the training is to help people feel happy, calm and satisfied in the midst of a health crisis. Improvements in their health and longevity are a bonus. Each participant is encouraged to learn at least three of the eight skills and practice one or more each day. The eight skills are:</p>
<p>■ Recognize a positive event each day.</p>
<p>■ Savor that event and log it in a journal or tell someone about it.</p>
<p>■ Start a daily gratitude journal.</p>
<p>■ List a personal strength and note how you used it.</p>
<p>■ Set an attainable goal and note your progress.</p>

NBA Hall-of-Famer Jerry West was nicknamed “Mr. Clutch” for his amazing ability to come in strong on the court when it mattered most. Now, the 14-time NBA All-Star and legendary coach and manager is hoping to win—off the court—for a cause that hits home. Jerry shares a condition with as many as 6 million Americans called atrial fibrillation, or AFib, an irregular heartbeat that puts him at one-in-three odds of having a stroke in his lifetime. Since diagnosis, he has been working closely with his doctor to start and stay on treatment to help prevent a stroke due to AFib, and is now speaking out to encourage others with AFib to do the same.</p>
<p>More than half of people with AFib don’t believe that they are at an increased risk of stroke. People with AFib also may not realize that their stroke risk can change over time. That’s why, West and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., are teaming up to help those living with AFib by offering a simple tool they can use to calculate their stroke risk at www.MyAFibRisk.com. It’s eight easy questions that can help those with AFib understand their risk and talk with their doctor about stroke risk management and treatment options. </p>
<p>For every person who goes to the website and calculates their risk, Janssen will make a contribution to Mended Hearts, a nonprofit peer-to-peer support network that inspires hope and helps to improve the quality of life for heart patients, their families and caregivers.</p>
