A New Study Reveals How to Fill a Vital Gap In Infant Gut Health
New research is showing that a specific probiotic bacteria is key to restoring a baby’s gut to its protective, natural state and providing a foundation for life-long optimal health.
When babies are born they begin to acquire a collection of bacteria called the microbiome –trillions of microorganisms that co-exist in our bodies and live all over us, on our skin, nose, mouth, eyes and gastrointestinal tract, or gut. Research shows that the infant gut microbiome plays a critical role in healthy immune and metabolic development, as well as meeting babies’ dietary needs.
The bacteria in a baby’s microbiome are passed down from their mom at birth. For generations, one strain called B. infantis dominated the infant gut. However, modern medical practices such as increased antibiotic use and C-sections have led to a microbial imbalance in the infant gut and a loss of this key bacteria. This imbalance has been associated with a range of chronic health issues including allergies, asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes and a host of immunological disorders.
Now, recently published data shows for the first time that supplementation with activated B. infantis can completely transform the gut environment in babies that are fed breast milk. Along with restoring a healthy gut microbiome, the study results show that the supplementation significantly reduced levels of potentially harmful bacteria linked to disease in infants born either through natural or C-section delivery.
Mark Underwood, M.D., Chief Pediatric Neonatologist at UC Davis discussed the study results and explain how the activated form of this beneficial bacteria can be helpful for babies and about other ways to encourage the health of infants.

New Guidelines Suggest Introducing Foods like Peanuts to Babies as Young as 4-6 Months Help Prevent Allergies
Jenna Helwig, Parents Food Editor and author of a new book, REAL BABY FOOD tells us how.
Until now, we believed that introducing babies to foods slowly would reduce the risk of developing an allergic reaction. Now, new research indicates that the delay could potentially increase the risk of developing a food allergy. The latest recommendations from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology are in sharp contrast to earlier guidelines that children should put off having foods like peanuts, eggs shellfish, and fish until age 3.
Parents magazine food editor, Jenna Helwig, helps parents navigate these new guidelines and offers tips on how to cook for babies and toddlers from 6 months to 3 years in a way that makes the process easy, fast, and flexible, starting with simple purees and moving on to finger foods and toddler meals.peanuts

• Results of the new LEAP Study (Learning Early About Peanut Allergy) indicating that a delay in introducing potentially allergenic foods to babies might actually cause more harm than good.
• How to safely introduce new foods to baby and toddler.
• How to encourage a lifetime of clean healthy eating for your baby.
• How to discourage “picky eaters”.
• How not to leave out the rest of the family when making dinner for toddler.
JENNA HELWIG is the food editor for Parents magazine and has ap-peared on the Today show numerous times demonstrating kid-friendly recipes. She is also a freelance writ¬er, culinary instructor, and person¬al chef, and founded Rosaberry, a culinary services company devoted to helping families eat better. Jenna lives in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter.

Adams proclaimed the month of May 2014 as “Safe Sleep Month”, just days ahead of Mother’s Day, at a press conference in the rotunda of Brooklyn Borough Hall, in order to alert new parents on the importance of proper care of their infants as well as tips to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). In partnership with Delta Children, Borough President Adams announced that he is distributing 400 free cribs and play yards to families in need through local community boards, churches and non-profit organizations.

“We want to educate parents on simple items that can potentially harm their child, and that a safe clean crib leads to a safe household and a clean pathway to raising a healthy child,” said Borough President Adams. “We are the face of individuals in order to have a safe place to sleep, and one of our goals is to ensure that Brooklyn is a place that educates and empowers parents and families.”

During the press conference, Borough President Adams unveiled a new informational video on safe sleep tips, co-starring himself, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Assistant Commissioner Dr. Aletha Maybank and Joe Shamie, President of Delta Children. The video can be viewed online at http://youtu.be/r0d1O1z1Nuw, and plans are in place to make it available to local daycare centers, hospitals and other related institutions.

Recipients of the cribs and play yards include victims of domestic violence, homeless families, victims of fires, families of returning veterans who are in need, young single moms, including teenage moms, families with a child that has a disability, as well as low income families and unemployed/underemployed families. Local organizations that have assisted Borough President Adams in distribution to these families include the NYC Family Justice Center in Brooklyn of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, Bed-Stuy Campaign Against Hunger, Brookdale Healthy Families Program, Catholic Charities, Center for Family Life, Fort Greene Snap, Lutheran Medical Center, Mixteca Organization and Serenity House Family Residence. Those looking for more information about submitting a request for a crib or play yard should call (718) 802-4042.
