During National Cancer Survivors Month, people around the country are recognizing the more than 16.9 million cancer survivors in the U.S. who are living with, through, and beyond their disease. www.lls.org

One of the most innovative treatments giving hope to people with blood cancers such as lymphoma, leukemia or myelomas is CAR T-cell therapy.1
• CAR T-cell therapies are made from a patient’s own blood cells and use the immune system to identify and attack cancer cells.2
• These innovative treatments have shown to be potentially life-saving therapies for patients with certain blood cancers, like large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL), which is the most common form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and can be aggressive.2,3
• However, awareness of CAR T-cell therapy among potentially eligible patients in the U.S. is low – only about 1 out of 5 are aware of the therapy as a treatment option.4

Michael, a small business owner and father of three girls living in New Jersey, was diagnosed with LBCL in October 2018 and was treated with chemotherapy which he described as “pretty aggressive.” His cancer quickly returned – only four months later – and he decided to participate in a clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy. Today he is 3+ years cancer-free.

Dr. Lori Leslie, a hematologist and oncologist at Hackensack Meridian John Theurer Cancer Center in New Jersey, treats people with blood cancers and has seen firsthand their devastating impact particularly for those whose cancer returns. Dr. Leslie, who treated Michael with CAR T-cell therapy, is available to discuss how recent treatment advances like CAR T-cell therapies offer people like Michael hope.

Michael and Dr. Leslie speak about CAR T-cell therapies for cancers like LBCL and how eligible patients and caregivers can learn more about these innovative treatments.

The AARP Innovation Fund will make direct investments in early- to late-stage stage companies developing innovative products in three healthcare related areas:

Aging at Home—The fund will encourage the development of products and services that leverage technology to enable older adults to continue living in their homes safely and affordably such as: home sensor activity tracking; hearing and vision health; mobility assistance; meal plan/delivery/cooking solutions; social communities; physical augmentation devices.

Convenience and Access to Healthcare—The fund will support the advancement of products and services that enable 50-plus consumers to adopt positive health behaviors that they welcome into their lives such as: telemedicine; consumer diagnostics; consumer care transparency tools.

Preventative Health—The fund will seek to expand the market for products and services that help 50-plus consumers prevent the onset of serious health conditions such as: diet and nutrition management; stress and emotion management/therapy; fitness apps and programs; integrated health engagement incentives; cognitive and brain health.

In addition to financial support, some companies receiving these investments will have access to AARP’s knowledge and distribution channels to help 50-plus consumers have the opportunity to benefit from these innovative products and services.

“We look forward to working with AARP on this fund that will invest in and support innovative companies creating solutions for the people in this powerful and growing key demographic and their families,” said Kathy Rosa, Managing Director and Portfolio Manager in J.P. People 50-plus are online, connected and make use of technology that is intuitive and consumer friendly. They have tremendous buying power – responsible for at least $7.1 trillion in annual economic activity – a number that is expected to grow to $13.5 trillion by 2032. In September 2008, the company changed it’s name from the R.A.B. Food Group to the Manischewitz Company, under which it operates today.

It all started with Rabbi Dov Behr

The B. Manischewitz Company, LLC traces its beginnings back to the spring of 1888, when Rabbi Dov Behr Manischewitz opened a small Matzo bakery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

A humble beginning

It was largely from his spiritual concerns that he set out to make matzo or unleavened bread for Passover, first for his family and a few friends, but soon for many of the devout Jews of the city. His bakery soon evolved into a successful business, innovative and prosperous––though never inattentive to the spiritual needs of its customers.

From small bakery to booming business

By the end of the century, demand for his matzo had become so great that Rabbi Manischewitz turned to the use of gas-fired ovens, replacing the older coal stoves being used by other Jewish bakers. The newer ovens allowed for much more careful control of the baking speed, insuring a consistent and standard quality to the matzos.
He also introduced portable traveling-tunnel ovens, and was the first to package his matzos for shipment to places beyond the immediate neighborhood of his bakery. He even began shipping his matzos overseas, to such diverse places as England, Japan, France, Hungary, Egypt and New Zealand. His bright, clean bakery would become a model for future kosher bakeries, both in America and abroad.

Matzo on the move

In 1932, the company built a second factory. Located in Jersey City, New Jersey, the plant quickly became the model for all new machine-made matzo bakeries worldwide. Closer to a much larger Jewish population than that of Cincinnati, the new factory also made distribution of the company’s product more efficient and quickly enlarged its customer base. The Manischewitz label was soon dominant in ethnic grocery stores and delicatessens in the larger East Coast cities. Thanks to the technology and efficiency of the New Jersey factory, Manischewitz was able to close down the Cincinnati facility altogether.

Same quality, more quantity

In 1940, Manischewitz produced its first Tam Tam cracker. It signaled the initial departure from its line of matzo products. About the same time, in a licensing arrangement, Manischewitz wines began to be sold throughout the country.
In 1954, the company purchased a processing plant located in Vineland, New Jersey. The Vineland facility, which has now ceased operations, manufactured all of the company’s canned and jarred products, including old familiar favorites like gefilte fish, chicken soup and borscht. The plant was primarily a hand-pack processing operation stressing careful attention to quality and flexibility. Workers there packed about 2,000,000 lbs. of fish and 1,000,000 lbs. of beets each year.

The Great American Teach-Off to recognize two extraordinary U.S. educators with $10,000 classroom grants to support their amazing efforts in the classroom

GOOD and University of Phoenix Honor America’s Most Innovative Teachers

LOS ANGELES, January 22, 2013 — GOOD and University of Phoenix today announced the launch of the Great American Teach-Off, a contest that will award two extraordinary teachers from grades K-12 with $10,000 classroom grants. Starting today, parents, students and community members can nominate innovative and inspiring teachers by visiting  www.good.is/GATO. The nomination period will end on Feb. 15,

2013, and 20 finalists will be chosen to compete for the $10,000 classroom grants. There will be 10 finalists from grades K-6 and 10 finalists from grades 7-12, and a grant recipient will be chosen from each category.

Past winners impacted their communities by engaging students in a hands-on sustainability project and facilitating private instruction for displaced students. The 2012 grant recipient was eighth grade teacher Daryl Bilandzija of Odyssey Charter School

in Altadena, Calif. He used the $10,000 grant to connect the inside of his classroom to an outdoor edible and sustainable garden and gave his students a hands-on learning environment.

2011 grant recipient Terry Dougherty, a third grade teacher at Roland Rogers Elementary School in Galloway Township, N.J., drew on her eacher, great, american, teach-off, teach, off, class, classroom, grants, efforts, good, phoenix, honor, innovative, teachers, school, children, childown experience being part of a military family. She recognized the hardships military children endure as they transfer state to state and experience curricula changes. Dougherty used her grant to develop “Military Child Tutoring – They Are Heroes Too!,” a free tutoring program for children of military families.

“Teachers play a critical role in shaping the futures of our nation’s children,” said Dr. Meredith Curley, Dean of the College of Education at University of Phoenix. “The

By recognizing teachers who are committed to impacting student learning outcomes in their classrooms, GOOD and University of Phoenix hope to shed light on the incredible work this nation’s teachers are accomplishing in their classrooms. The $10,000 grants will directly support two K-12 classrooms, but will also impact other classrooms across the nation, serving as examples for educators to adopt for use with their own students.

Christopher Roe is the chief executive office of the California STEM Learning Network (CSLNet), a nonprofit organization working to ensure that California is a national leader in preparing STEM-capable students.

Roe is in charge of overseeing the creation of strategic relationships and collaborating with regional, state and national partners to rapidly scale innovative STEM teaching and learning across K-14 education in order that all students have access to high-quality learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), the critical fields that fuel California’s dynamic economy. In addition, Roe been appointed by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson to serve on the newly-created STEM Task Force that will examine how to improve the way California educates its students in these subjects and engage more students in scientific and technical fields, which are integral to the state’s economic future.

Prior to joining CSLNet, Roe served as the Deputy Director for the Business-Higher Education Forum (BHEF), a membership organization comprised of corporate CEOs and senior executives, college and university presidents, and foundation leaders working together to advance innovative solutions to the nation’s most significant education challenges. In this role, Roe worked closely with BHEF’s members, policymakers, and educators to develop and advance innovative policy and programmatic solutions to our nation’s most pressing education challenges. While at BHEF Roe provided leadership for its STEM initiative, which has as its goal doubling the number of STEM graduates nationally.

Roe previously was also managing director of the Stanford Institute for Higher Education Research and the National Center for Postsecondary Improvement, based at Stanford University. Roe is also co-founder of Pacific Educational Group, based in San Francisco, CA, and the Foundation for a College Education (FCE) located in East Palo Alto, CA, an award-winning non-profit organization that assists students of color and their families in attaining a college education.

Roe has authored or contributed to a number of reports on issues of state and federal higher education policy, including “An American Imperative: Transforming the Recruitment, Retention, and Renewal of Our Nation’s Mathematics and Science Teaching Workforce” by the Business-Higher Education Forum and “New Models of Leadership and Collaboration to Improve Science Education: The Role of Business” in Science Education Leadership by NSTA Press.

Roe received his master’s in public policy from the University of California-Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy, and his bachelor’s of science degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
