In 1993, Bergin bought an old church in Tipperary and converted it into a poetry centre. Bergin explained, “I’ve recently come to feel I can encourage children and teenagers with their writing.[6] I’m continually giving groups money to make videos, but I insist that they have a good script. I do it because it makes the difference between them doing a video or not. It doesn’t cost a lot, and it gives kids an incredible boost of confidence.”[6] In 1998, in response to the murder of a 14-year-old Tallaght boy, Ben Smyth, Bergin participated in setting up a special fund to sponsor young children from Tallaght.[4]

The Rhinecliff prepares a menu that consists of traditional Scottish dishes like cock-a-leekie soup, “neeps and tatties” (turnips and potatoes mashed together) and lemon curd shortbread, but substitutes a Highland beef stew for what Burns called the “great chieftain o’ the puddin-race.”.

The ceremonies include the requisite Parade or Piping-in of the Haggis, along with the traditional Selkirk Grace, the Toast of the Lassies and the Lassies’ Response for a bit of good-natured battle-of-the-sexes humor. Master piper Jeremy Freeman will play the bagpipes; storyteller Jonathan Kruk and performer Jim Keyes will relate some incidents from the life of Burns; swordsman Neil Roberts will buckle some swash. Participants are encouraged to bring songs, poems and stories by, about and in the spirit of the Bard of Ayrshire. And at the end, everybody joins in singing Auld Lang Syne, in a context where it makes a lot more sense than on New Year’s Eve.

Skullsplitter Ale will be on tap, whiskeys will be available for tasting. If you want to indulge freely in Highland spirits without falling off the mountainside on the way home, the Rhinecliff offers a special room rate for guests of Burns Night.

A Burns Supper Guide from Burns Night: My Supper With Rabbie
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere! And gie’s a hand o’ thine!

And we’ll tak’ a right guid-willie waught, For auld lang syne.
The annual celebratory tribute to the life, works and spirit of the great Scottish poet, Robert Burns (1759-1796). Celebrated on, or about the Bard’s birthday, Burns Suppers range from stentoriously formal gatherings of esthetes and scholars to uproariously informal rave-ups of drunkards and louts. Most Burns Suppers (The Rhinecliff’s) fall’s in the middle of this range, and adhere, more or less, to some sort of time honoured form which includes the eating of a traditional Scottish meal, the drinking of Scotch whisky, and the recitation of works by, about, and in the spirit of the Bard.

A Very Special Guest to Celebrate our 10th Anniversary Supper- John Grimaldi-

A professional juggler and clown of Scottish-Irish heritage. A unique act which combines Gaelic and Scots song, juggling, poetry, dance, zaniness and audience participation into a new exciting brew of theatrical excitement!

He performs with the NY Celtic Dancers, an innovative group with new ideas on traditional Scottish dance. With partner, Bonnie Heather Greene, he has developed dance pieces that are unique combinations of Gaelic song (puirt-a-beul) with Scottish hardshoe dance! Also, pieces that combine poetry, juggling, dance and physics in a truly unusual and exciting way.

Besides his Scottish themed work, John is artistic Director of the NY Lyric Circus and has performed at the Metropolitan Opera for the past 20 years as juggler, clown, stiltwalker and actor. For 14 years he has been a part of the Big Apple Circus Clown Care Program performing as “Dr. Quackenbush,”

John has taught circus artists since 1970, including stiltwalkers for Alvin Ailey Dance Company and the Metropolitan Opera, jugglers who went on to the Big Apple Circus and Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus and many others who enriched their lives with these lively arts.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY

Celebrate an “Irish True” St. Patrick’s Day

Tim Herlihy, Tullamore D.E.W., Irish Whiskey Expert

As far as whiskey experts go, they don’t come more Irish True than Tullamore D.E.W. Brand Ambassador Tim Herlihy. From his humble beginnings in the small farming town of Termonfeckin in Ireland’s County Louth, to his work as the North American representative for one of Ireland’s most beloved and storied products, Tim’s life and career have been marked by the kind of passion, warmth and love of whiskey that typifies the Irish True character. His current role as Tullamore D.E.W. Brand Ambassador sees him bringing his career to a new level, as he travels the country, educating, entertaining and sharing his passion for the most Irish True of Whiskeys.

Myths and legends about St. Patrick’s Day
Saint Patrick started the tradition of drinking on St. Patrick’s Day
False. St. Patrick’s Day is a Christian feast day, marked by celebration, to commemorate martyrs on the dates of their deaths.

Irish whiskey got involved in this celebration from an old legend. So the story goes, an innkeeper served Saint Patrick a skimpy glass of whiskey and Saint Patrick decided to use the occasion to teach the innkeeper a lesson in generosity. He is said to have told the man a monstrous devil lived in his cellar that was feeding on his dishonesty and would only leave if the innkeeper changed his ways. On his return some time later, he found the innkeeper filling all the patrons’ glasses until they overflowed. Saint Patrick is said to have banished the demon and proclaimed everyone should have a drop of the hard stuff on his feast day, March 17. Fact or fiction, it’s a fine tale to tell your friends and makes Irish whiskey the most authentic drink to enjoy on St. Patrick’s Day.

The color of St. Patrick’s Day is green

False. The color associated with Saint Patrick was blue, not green. The importance of green can be attributed to Saint Patrick using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. The green shamrock was also used from the 18th century as a symbol of Irish rebellion, patriotism and sympathy with Irish independence. In Ireland, whether you wear green or blue on St. Patrick’s Day, it’s the Irish True spirit that matters. Put simply, that means embracing the present and living life, facing its challenges with a courageous and lyrical heart, and a drop of the pure good stuff with friends you really want to drink with … but without the novelty hat!

Leprechauns are a traditional symbol of St. Patrick’s Day
False. In 1959, Walt Disney released a film called ‘Darby O’Gill & the Little People,’ which introduced America to a cheerful, friendly leprechaun, very different from the cranky little man of Irish folklore. But Disney’s imagined version stuck, and the leprechaun is now a symbol of St. Patrick’s Day and Ireland in general.

Ways to celebrate an “Irish True” St. Patrick’s Day

There’s something in the Irish character that puts others at ease – welcoming you on the one hand, while challenging you on the other, agreeing with you but questioning you at the same time. We call it ‘Irish True’. You don’t have to be Irish or go to Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in a way that is ‘Irish True’. Here are some easy and authentic ideas to honor the man.

Take the day off

Start by taking the day off to celebrate with your friends and family. Even the tiny Caribbean Island of Montserrat celebrates St. Patrick’s Day in honor of the proud mutineers of Irish slaves who fought a failed rebellion against their colonial masters on 17 March 1768. Ever since, in true Irish spirit, St. Patrick’s Day has been a public holiday on Montserrat – the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean. There are only two countries in the world where St. Patrick’s Day is a public holiday: Ireland and Montserrat.

‘Have the craic’

Craic pronounced ‘Crack’ is a Gaelic word, with no exact English translation. Put simply, having the craic is having a good time or a laugh. You don’t have to participate in a St. Patrick’s Day parade to enjoy the craic. One way is to visit your favorite bar, screaming with character and soul, to share great memories.

Share a Toast

Saint Patrick and his monks began complementing oral storytelling with writing. This tradition now remains in the blood of the Irish and many practice storytelling and other verbal arts in pubs. Toasting is a big part of Irish culture, it should speak from the heart and is meant to be shared with those most important to you.

• A little more than 25% of respondents falsely believe St. Patrick chased all the snakes out of Ireland
As far as whiskey experts go, they don’t come more Irish True than Tullamore Dew Brand Ambassador Tim Herlihy. His current role as Tullamore Dew Brand Ambassador sees him bringing his career to a new level, as he travels the country, educating, entertaining and sharing his passion for the most Irish True of Whiskeys.

• Kick off the day with a hearty, traditional Irish breakfast; it’s going to be a long day and you’ll need sustenance – my favorites include bacon rashers (real back bacon, if you can get it), both white and black pudding, fried eggs and a strong cup of Irish breakfast tea
• Take in a local St. Patrick’s Day parade; in Ireland, a parade can be found in a big city complete with massive floats right down to a simple tractor parade in a small village. Every city, town and village has its own parade on St. Patrick’s Day. In America it’s no different – go out there and show your support!
• Catch some Irish entertainment; pull up a chair at your favorite pub and listen to a traditional session band or, if you’re in NYC, get tickets to the Craic Festival for the best in Irish film and music
• Go out and find an Irish True bar or pub; forget the green beer and shamrocks on the wall; an Irish True establishment has its own character and way of doing things; there’s sense of community and camaraderie and, above all, friendship
• Have a St. Patrick’s Day toast at the ready; toasting is a big part of Irish culture; it should speak from the heart and is meant to be shared with those most important to you. So, gather your mates, buy a round, and use this toast for St. Patrick’s Day –
