Early Detection is Key to Reducing the Chance of Serious Outcomes of
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

www.vascularcures.org

When most people think of heart disease, their association is with coronary artery disease (CAD), where fatty deposits and plaque can build up in the arteries that carry blood from your heart through the body. But artery disease can affect more than just the heart. The limited blood flow caused by artery disease can be dangerous, leading to blood clots and a lesser known but very serious disease called peripheral artery disease (PAD).

CAD is the most common type of heart disease and is the greatest cause of morbidity and mortality in the U.S.1 Approximately 18.2 million adults over age 20 are living with CAD in the U.S.2 PAD affects an estimated 20 million Americans,3 yet only approximately 8.5 million are diagnosed.4 If left untreated, CAD and PAD can increase the risk of serious health outcomes such as heart attack, stroke,5 and – in the case of PAD – acute limb ischemia or even a lower limb amputation.6

It’s important to be aware of the potential connection between these two artery diseases. If you have CAD, you may have an increased risk of PAD – and vice versa.6 In fact, more than 40% of individuals with CAD also have PAD.1

Further, these conditions have overlapping risk factors – including hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes and smoking (even formerly smoking).6 In fact, smoking is the most common preventable cause of PAD.7 Up to 90 percent of people with PAD have a history of smoking,8 and smokers have a 4x greater risk of PAD than nonsmokers.9

Early detection is key to reducing the chance of serious outcomes. Knowing your risk of CAD and PAD – and talking to your doctor – are important first steps.

Dr. Veita Bland, renowned hypertension specialist and family physician, and Pamela Parker, PAD patient and passionate advocate for artery disease awareness, discusses the importance of early detection, intervention and management of CAD and PAD.

Interview courtesy: Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc

IT’S HEARTHEALTH MONTH AND AN IMPORTANT TIME TO TALK ABOUT ARTERY DISEASE.

[ALT, if live or airing before February 1: HEART HEALTH MONTH IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER AND IT’S ANIMPORTANT TIME TO TALK ABOUT ARTERY DISEASE.]

ARTERY DISEASECAN AFFECT MORE THAN JUST YOUR HEART AND EARLY DETECTION IS KEY TO REDUCING THECHANCE OF SERIOUS OUTCOMES.

HERE TO TALKABOUT WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE (C-A-D) AND A RELATEDCONDITION, CALLED PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE (P-A-D), ARE FAMILY PHYSICIAN ANDRENOWNED HYPERTENSION SPECIALIST, DR. VEITA (“Veeta”) BLAND, ALONG WITH P-A-DPATIENT AND ADVOCATE, PAMELA.

BIO’S:

She is board certified in Family Medicine and is a Certified Clinical Hypertension Specialist.

She has spent her career making sure her patients are informed about their health so they understand why taking care of their health is important and can pass down the correct information about their disease to others.

To that end, she is a columnist of medical articles for papers across the country and is the host of the nationally syndicated podcast, “It’s A Matter of Your Health: The30 Min Health Magazine”.

Clinical depression, known as major depressive disorder (MDD), is much more serious than just a case of the holiday blues, and can have a significant negative impact on all aspects of life.

Website for more information:
Spravato.com

In fact, depression is the leading cause of disability in the world, with an estimated 17.3 million American adults experiencing at least one major depressive episode in the past year.1,2

What’s more – one-third of people in the U.S. with MDD have treatment-resistant depression (TRD), meaning they have not responded adequately to at least two different antidepressants of adequate dose and duration in the current depressive episode.3,4

If you or someone you know are living with depression, now is an important time to check in and make sure the right care plan is in place. If symptoms persist after trying several treatment options, a discussion with a doctor may be needed to determine whether it’s MDD or TRD.

Craig Chepke, MD, will be available to discuss the signs of challenging to treat depression and the treatment options currently available. He will be joined by Sally, a patient living with TRD who is currently taking SPRAVATO® (esketamine) CIII nasal spray to help treat her depressive symptoms.

Called Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), When Advanced, It’s the Leading Cause of Amputations Worldwide
and Results in High Rates of Fatal and Non-Fatal Cardiovascular Events2,3
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common chronic circulatory condition that often goes undiagnosed and undertreated.1 In fact, PAD impacts an estimated 20 million Americans,4 yet only 8.5 million are diagnosed.5 If left untreated, PAD can increase the risk of serious health outcomes such as heart attack, stroke, acute limb ischemia or even a lower limb amputation.6 Despite being largely preventable, amputations can be a devastating complication of PAD associated with high mortality.3
Earlier this year, the American Heart Association (AHA) issued a charge to reduce nontraumatic lower-extremity amputations by 20% by 2030. Despite a steady decline in the rate of amputations in two previous decades, the amputation rate among patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and diabetes – the patient group among the highest risk for lower extremity amputations – increased by 50% over a span of only six years (from 2009 to 2015) and the rate of amputations continues to rise in the U.S.3
Further, significant health disparities exist in the prevalence, diagnosis and care of patients with PAD. For example, Black Americans – who have a higher prevalence of asymptomatic PAD, less access to quality vascular care,6 and are at risk for delays in care8 – are up to 4x more likely to have an amputation as a result of PAD compared to White Americans.3
Serious outcomes, including lower-extremity amputation, cannot be effectively prevented if its leading cause, PAD, is not diagnosed and managed.6 By elevating PAD awareness and increasing access to screening and treatment, both patients and physicians can be empowered to better understand the symptoms of PAD, seek care at the optimal time, and have the right conversations at their visits to help reduce the chance of serious outcomes.5
Dr. Geoffrey Barnes, cardiologist, vascular medicine specialist, and faculty member at the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center and Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, to discuss the importance of early identification, intervention and management of PAD.
NBA Hall-of-Famer Jerry West was nicknamed “Mr. Clutch” for his amazing ability to come in strong on the court when it mattered most. Now, the 14-time NBA All-Star and legendary coach and manager is hoping to win—off the court—for a cause that hits home. Jerry shares a condition with as many as 6 million Americans called atrial fibrillation, or AFib, an irregular heartbeat that puts him at one-in-three odds of having a stroke in his lifetime. Since diagnosis, he has been working closely with his doctor to start and stay on treatment to help prevent a stroke due to AFib, and is now speaking out to encourage others with AFib to do the same.

More than half of people with AFib don’t believe that they are at an increased risk of stroke. People with AFib also may not realize that their stroke risk can change over time. That’s why, West and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., are teaming up to help those living with AFib by offering a simple tool they can use to calculate their stroke risk at www.MyAFibRisk.com. It’s eight easy questions that can help those with AFib understand their risk and talk with their doctor about stroke risk management and treatment options.

For every person who goes to the website and calculates their risk, Janssen will make a contribution to Mended Hearts, a nonprofit peer-to-peer support network that inspires hope and helps to improve the quality of life for heart patients, their families and caregivers.

Dr. Mark J. Alberts will join Jerry West to address the risk of stroke associated with AFib and the importance of working with a doctor to determine an appropriate treatment plan that can help lower patient risk.

THE FACTS
•	Jerry West is currently an executive board member of the Golden State Warriors, who recently won the 2015 NBA Championship
•	West played for the Lakers from 1960 to 1974, and is believed to be the inspiration for the NBA logo
•	West was selected as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1997
•	Up to 6 million Americans are diagnosed with AFib, the most common serious heart rhythm abnormality in people over the age of 65
• One in three people with AFib will have a stroke in their lifetime
