About the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF):

The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that relies on the generosity of our donors and volunteers to care for the homeless animals in our community and place them in loving “forever homes.” The number of animals in need of our help is growing every day. The overpopulation of pets on Long Island is a major issue and sadly more amazing animals are ending up homeless. Whether caring for strays found wandering the streets, rescuing neglected and abandoned animals, or saving dogs from the horrors of the puppy mill industry, the shelter is a safe haven for all animals and for some, the last resort. Without SASF, these animals would not be able to survive. The shelter provides a steppingstone for animals to find loving homes. It offers them housing, food, medical treatment, training, and rehabilitation when necessary.

It signifies legacy work to provide long-term equitable and economic solutions to race-based disparities.

On December 30, 2022, in preparation for the Emancipation Awards and to build awareness, hundreds gathered in Newark for the first Annual Pre-watchnight Prayer Walk to celebrate “Emancipation: The Dawn of Freedom.” City officials, clergy, and residents walked from Lincoln Park to Newark City Hall in solidarity and prayer, thanking the ancestors for their sacrifice for our freedom.

As the sun set over Dune Beach in Southampton, American Humane hosted a special clambake, Dogs on the Dunes, to honor the brave heroes on both ends of the leash. Highlighted by the beautiful summer sky, the sold-out event was a tremendous success with many invited guests bringing their own dogs which only added to the fun evening. Military working dogs, who so valiantly serve alongside our troops to keep them safe from IEDs and other dangers, are too often retired overseas and are not able to be brought home to the loving homes of their former handlers. American Humane stands first to serve to reunite Battle Buddies who have so bravely served our country, and who are really heroes on both ends of the leash. Dr. Robin Ganzert, American Humane’s president & CEO started things off talking about the significance of the event before introducing Philanthropist and American Humane Board member, Jean Shafiroff. Jean gave a speech announcing that she was honored to serve as National Spokesperson for the American Humane’s Feed the Hungry Covid-19 Program and that they had reached their goal of $1,000,000 to feed over 1,000,000 animals.

Jean Shafiroff, who is an American Humane board member, has been the national spokesperson for the Feed the Hungry campaign and has hosted several fundraisers since its launch. While helping raise funds, Jean also donated generously to the cause and has appeared on national television programs numerous times for interviews promoting the campaign.

Notable attendees included: Jean Shafiroff, Martin Shafiroff, Dr. Robin Ganzert, Janna Bullock, Rosalie Brinton, Greg D’Elia, Elizabeth Shafiroff, Lee Fryd, Susan and Hunter Cushing, Jared and Mindy Epstein, Annie and Michael Falk, Geoff and Cyrena Fink, Christine Flaherty, Rob and Lisa Guida, Samantha Haywood and Doug Greef, Herb and Sharon Jablin, Lynne Kaiser, Andrea Karambelas, Sam and Terri Kaufman, Herb and Rita Krauss, Stuard and Marci Merzer, Burt and Knight Meem, James and Sue Mulholland, Marion and Phil Piro, Marilyn Pelstring and Peter Feinman, David and Meghan Rainey, Michael Shaheen and Maryanne Horwath, Lawrence and Judy Sullivan, Ann Thomas, Robert and Elizabeth Tomich, Abigail Trenk, Wendy Wegner, Stanley and Sonja Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Winston.

“American Humane is honored to have brought together so many fabulous people in support of our efforts to reunite American’s brave military K-9s with their beloved handlers,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert. “Every dog who serves in the U.S. Armed Forces deserves our thanks and a restful retirement, which is why we were thrilled to launch our Military Working Dog Reunification fund at our inaugural Dogs on the Dunes Clambake. This critical fund will make it possible to bring even more of our K-9 veterans home thanks to the generous help of our donors and ambassadors.”

Southamptonites came out to the Dunes with their dogs and enjoyed a stunning moon rise while noshing on clams, lobster and s’mores roasted over beach bonfire. Guests also kicked off their flip-flops and got down to the musical entertainment provided by the Alex Donner Steel Drum Band. Proceeds from the event will establish the American Humane Military Working Dog Reunification fund and help to bring our brave MWDs who are sadly left alone overseas home to be reunited with their beloved handlers. Importantly, the fund will also allow American Humane to provide free specialty and preventative medical care to make retired MWDs as healthy and comfortable as possible during retirement.

Powerhouse philanthropists Jean Shafiroff and Henry Buhl were part of a panel of speakers on hand to celebrate the screening of Robin Melanie Leacock’s documentary “A Passion For Giving” Saturday in Southampton. Jean Shafiroff spoke about the great benefits of giving, her life and the importance of teaching future generations to become philanthropists. Animal activist and actress Missy Hargraves took the stage to introduce the PBS film in which she is featured along with Henry Buhl, Donna Karan, Count Alexandre de Lesseps, Carolina Herrera, MTV founder John Sykes, and RUN DMC’s Darryl McDaniels with cameos by Dan Ackroyd, Richard Branson, Roger Waters, Fran Liebowitz, and President Bill Clinton. Candace Bushnell, along with “The Grandfather of Venture Capitalism, Alan Patricof, legendary concert promoter Ron Delsener, and G.E. Smith of SNL fame showed up.

Jean made an appearance at a private dinner hosted by Buhl attended by LuAnn de Lesseps, and Pamela O’Connor; then joined other movie-goers that dined at the all new Union Sushi & Steak a modern take on the steakhouses of old; who donated a portion of proceeds to The Southampton Animal Shelter. The sold-out socially-distanced event, touted by Vanity Fair as “honest, heartfelt, and inspirational,” launches a nation-wide tour of the film about philanthropy.

ADCOLOR at the Apollo, Featuring Wyclef Jean

ADCOLOR announces details of its second annual After Dark concert

NEW YORK, August 19, 2020 — ADCOLOR, the premier organization dedicated to celebrating and promoting professionals of color and diversity in the creative industries, today announced its 2020 After Dark event will feature a virtual concert by Grammy Award-winning artist Wyclef Jean at the Apollo Theater. The event will close out the ADCOLOR Everywhere conference and mark Wyclef’s first-ever, complete performance of his Grammy-nominated, Double Platinum album, The Carnival. The historic performance, free of charge, will be streamed live from the Apollo stage starting at 8pm EST on September 9, 2020.

“After such a successful ADCOLOR After Dark concert last year, we knew we had to bring the experience back for this year’s virtual event,” said Tiffany R. Warren, Founder and President of ADCOLOR. “It’s truly a remarkable moment for our organization to partner with the Apollo on it, and it’s all the more iconic with Wyclef doing his first-ever complete performance of The Carnival. I’m here for it, and I know our community will be too.”

Released in 1997, The Carnival features a revolutionary mix of Haitian creole, rap, world music and pop. The debut album, which includes well-known singles “Guantanamera” and “Gone Till November”, received a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 40th Grammy Awards and peaked at number four on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Nearly 25 years later, The Carnival continues to be a poignant example of Wyclef’s musicality and his influence on the music industry at large.

“Stepping on the Apollo stage back in 1996 accomplished one of the greatest goals I had as a young Fugee, so it really feels like I’m coming home by having the opportunity to perform at the theater again,” said Haitian American rapper, musician and actor, Wyclef Jean. “I’ve been wanting to do a complete performance of The Carnival for a while now, and I’m excited that I’m able to combine energies with the Apollo and ADCOLOR to pull it off. All three of us are here to celebrate culture, diversity and the Black American experience, and we’re ready to provide a historic performance that does just that.”

In addition to being ADCOLOR’s second annual After Dark event, the concert will serve as the Apollo Theater’s fall 2020 season opener.

“We are thrilled that Wyclef Jean is returning to the Apollo Stage, 24 years since his very first performance in 1996, to celebrate his boundary-pushing album,” said Apollo Theater Executive Producer Kamilah Forbes. “For more than eight decades, the Apollo has been a beacon of Black creativity and provided a home to diverse voices. We are excited to partner with ADCOLOR to share his historic performance with the Apollo family and audiences around the globe as we kick off our fall season.”

The historic event will be streamed live to audiences everywhere via ADCOLOR’s virtual event site, Facebook, YouTube and Twitch, as well as the Apollo’s Digital Stage. For additional information, please continue to visit https://adcoloreverywhere.virtualeventsite.com and follow @adcolor on social media.

ABOUT THE APOLLO THEATER

‘The legendary Apollo Theater—the soul of American culture—plays a vital role in cultivating emerging artists and launching legends. Since its founding, the Apollo has served as a center of innovation and a creative catalyst for Harlem, the city of New York, and the world.

With music at its core, the Apollo’s programming extends to dance, theater, spoken word, and more. This includes the world premiere of the theatrical adaptation of Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me and the New York premiere of the opera We Shall Not Be Moved; special programs such as the blockbuster concert Bruno Mars Live at the Apollo; 100: The Apollo Celebrates Ella; and the annual Africa Now! Festival. The non-profit Apollo Theater is a performing arts presenter, commissioner, and collaborator that also produces festivals, largescale dance and musical works organized around a set of core initiatives that celebrate and extend the Apollo’s legacy through a contemporary lens, including the Women of the World (WOW) Festival as well as other multidisciplinary collaborations with partner organizations.

Since introducing the first Amateur Night contests in 1934, the Apollo Theater has served as a testing ground for new artists working across a variety of art forms and has ushered in the emergence of many new musical genres—including jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, soul, and hip-hop. Among the countless legendary performers who launched their careers at the Apollo are Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, H.E.R., D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill, Machine Gun Kelly and Miri Ben Ari; and the Apollo’s forward-looking artistic vision continues to build on this legacy.
WIN SCHOLARSHIP AS EARLY AS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO STUDY WHAT SCHOLARSHIPS MIGHT HELP YOU.
Over the past 15 years, college scholarship strategist Jean O’Toole has spoken before thousands of students, inspiring them to pursue their academic dreams. Now she has a new book out that helps them afford those dreams, Scholarship Strategies: Finding and Winning the Money You Need (Morgan James Publishing, Trade Paper,128 pages, $17.95, ISBN: 987-1-64279-482-3).

www.amazon.com/Scholarship-Strategies-Finding-Winning-Money/dp/1642794821

“You don’t need to be academically at the top of your class a star athlete, or a student with financial need in order to qualify for thousands of dollars of scholarship opportunities,” asserts O’Toole, co-founder of Connections101, a youth empowerment company specializing in motivational tools for outside scholarship searching.
O’Toole has helped students win thousands of dollars, including some individuals that were awarded up to $200,000.
“Money for college is out there,” she encourages. “You just need to know where to find it and how to win it. It’s all about working smarter and not harder. ”
In Scholarship Strategies, the motivational speaker shares her vast knowledge, laying out 25 clear strategies for winning the money needed for college, and identifies 15 ways to reduce college costs beyond scholarships and traditional financial aid.
O’Toole shares:
● How students can take a smart, methodical, organized, and disciplined approach to apply for many winnable scholarships.
● Which scholarships have less competition and lower thresholds to win?
● How students can identify their strengths, interests, connections, demographics, and accomplishments in order to be in a position to qualify for plenty of scholarships.
● Additional money students can win for room and board, books, travel, or study abroad – even if they get a full ride because of academics, athletics, or financial need.
● How parents can collaborate with students to divide and conquer the scholarship search process.
● Why guidance counselors, librarians, financial advisors, alumni, and government agencies each only know about some scholarships — and why you need to consult with many resources to get a complete picture of the scholarship landscape.
● Harmful scholarship myths that are debunked.
● How students as young as kindergarteners and middle-schoolers — or those older than 30 — can still win scholarships.
● Many examples of odd, unique, and rare scholarships that almost anyone could win.
“Higher education costs continue to rise,” says O’Toole. “Student loan debt has surpassed credit card debt in the United States reaching $1.5 Trillion dollars. Whether it costs a family$30,000 or $300,000 for a college degree, scholarship monies can dramatically reduce costs and benefit the bottom line..”
Some of O’Toole’s strategies include:
● Applying for local and regional scholarships first.
● Seeking out a series of small scholarships and not just one big one.
● Starting a scholarship search even before high school.
● Joining groups and organizations so you can qualify to apply for their scholarships.
● Asking family members and friends about scholarships from their employer, group affiliations, Jonestown.
● Talk to scholarship winners to gain insight on how they won.
● Form a bond with a scholarship buddy and share info on scholarships to apply to.
● Start applying early and often – and keep track of your applications.
● Using past homework assignments as material for scholarships as a huge time saver.
“Parents and students will be amazed at how much money is available to them for scholarships they never imagined even existed,” says O’Toole. “Anyone who follows the advice in Scholarships Strategies and uses the resources at www.Connections101.com are certain to find more scholarships than if they only rely on their school guidance offices.
“Jean’s energy and enthusiasm capture the student’s attention from the get-go, and she gets them to think about college and scholarships in new and different ways. Not only does she share her knowledge and insight with students, but she also provides them with strategies they need to take action and be successful in their pursuits. Jean provides an amazing resource; there is nothing like it out there!”
Stowe is a serious discovery. He is a natural born mystic whose long voyage seems to have been an extended religious transcendental experience-and what came out of it are paintings that are quite intriguing. They are not classifiable in any certain way. They seem to live in a borderline, exploring between the psychotic and the transcendental, spiritual experience. These works definitely come out of what the psychoanalyst Romain Roland referred to in 1927 as, coincidentally, the “Oceanic Feeling.” They are densely layered and as a body overlap with so many modern concepts in painting.

The art world is his current voyage. And besides that, wintry Cape Horn is a ride in an amusement park. –Internationally renown art critic and writer, Anthony Haden Guest , Whatever Floats His Boat

When Jean Paul Basquiat paints your portrait and gives it to you, you remain at sea alone in a 70 ft. schooner you built for 1152 days nonstop without re-supplying, a feat no other human has accomplished. When you create 100 marvelous mixed media paintings on that very voyage while your boat’s integrity is compromised and flipped in high seas, you have earned the right to claim that you have lived an extraordinary life. But even more interesting is how that art reflects that life.
New York City may be a mixed media artist’s dream place. There is junk, ready-mades and just about anything you can think of that can be garnered from its streets to work into a painting. But at sea? You must bring sand and dirt since you will not see land for several years, use sail canvas and sawdust from work done on the boat as well as burned pieces of old paintings and other replacement parts, each having its own worn history, in addition to paint. The undulations of the boat and the course you take all become integral parts of the artwork. But most importantly, the spirits of sea Gods and those unfortunates entombed in Davy Jones locker work to ensure their presence is expressed by influencing the mind and soul. Solitude at sea will inevitably elevate any overworked sailor into a Shaman or Mystic.
Reid’s work can be understood from the point-of-view of artists like Basquiat, whose work was an honest expression of innate, ubiquitous primitiveness. Alone on the ocean, in deep contemplation, sacred truths begin to reveal themselves. His art becomes the chalice that transforms the concept of the Self to action. In the initial visual review of his work, color, form and composition shout abstraction. But upon a second more careful study, a story in puzzle form points the way to divine. Forms are inspired by primitive sea life and rugged, raw land. Untamed images move with innate purpose and order in color only nature could provide. Reid also collaged biographical material such as press clippings and photos into his work, completing the life cycle from the sea to the man. In Reid’s words:
All the treasures and junk incorporated into the art are imbued with the hopes, anguish and love of their own intentions. They were all supposed to have done something to help the missions on the sea succeed. Many did help. Others had high hopes but never made it off the schooner.
Reid also traced images with the course of the schooner, 1000’s of miles in circumference. He created the first GPS art written about in a world wide article in 1999 by the Associated Press and drew the shape of a sea turtle to remind the world of the ancient wisdom of Aesop’s fable of the tortoise and the hare: to go slowly but surely instead of fast and brash as well as a whale the size of the Atlantic itself. So his art also has environmental, conceptual, social and uplifting intent.
When most people think of the process of making art, they think of it as an event—the artist painting in his studio until the piece is completed. But for the rare artist, like Reid, whose art is an integral part of his life, the process does not have a defined beginning and end. Much of what he has created was worked over the course of many years in locations around the world. Each is the end product of years of construction from differing points-of-view and points-in-time. Hockney once said something to the effect that an image is the result of the time it took to make it. That may account for the immediate connection between the viewer and what the painting says back.

His art empowered him to accomplish this historic feat that no other human even attempted. In fact, there are only a few ocean voyagers that have gone over 100 days at sea. What the art gave to Reid in terms of strength, it took from him in terms of empowerment. A painting becomes a holy object that has the power to heal, transform and uplift the viewer. It is rich and deep in many aspects, so it reveals itself to the viewer in different ways over time. Owners of his paintings often say they had the painting for years and never saw this or that; their stories and meanings change with each viewing.
Truth and honesty are the hallmarks of great art. They cannot be taught, they cannot be stolen, and it is in the most arduous of journeys, where survival depends on one’s every action and thought, where no human is allowed a single, serious error that the true spirit emerges in the face of the formidable overpowering sea. Imagine art that can reflect that. That is the art of Reid Stowe.

Reid’s story began well before he and current wife Soanya Ahmad departed from Hoboken, New Jersey on April 21, 2007, sailing together towards the Atlantic on a ship laden with three years worth of food. Their voyage continues to this day. The art is created on dry land with artifacts from boats, ever more meaningful and ever more life sustaining. To date, hundreds of media stories have been written about Reid, many showing Reid with his art as early as 1973. Reid has amassed a huge body of work inspired from his travels around the world. Reid led the first Arts and Cultural Expedition to Antarctica in 1986-87 and was already involved in the art scene in the East Village. As seen from the screenshot below, it sometimes takes greatness to know greatness.
