Sometimes you can go home again, which for The CW came in the form of The 91^st Hollywood Christmas Parade. It aired on the broadcast network Friday, December 15.

A Tinseltown staple for over nine decades, The Hollywood Christmas Parade, in simple terms, is an indelibly American tradition. More specifically, it is a celebration of life, which is synonymous with love and support, and fun and escape. It is a gathering of like-minded individuals, all co-existing within a celebratory and charitable community spirit. It is a reminder, via The CW and producer Associated Television International, that tradition still matters (even following a reported shift in viewer preference and behavior). And, The Hollywood Christmas Parade is another reason why the linear broadcast model can still be beneficial.

Based on the fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen, an additional 164,000 viewers tuned in versus the network’s week-ago time period average. That was an increase of a hefty 43 percent.

Historically…

The Hollywood Christmas parade began in 1928 under the name, The Santa Claus Lane Parade. Excluding 1942 to 1944, when World War II broke out, and during the pandemic in 2020, it has run every year. The parade was the idea of businessman Harry Blaine and the Hollywood Boulevard Association, and the plan at the inception was to draw more holiday season shoppers to the area, which was being promoted as the “world’s largest department store.”

The first Grand Marshal of The Hollywood Christmas Parade was veteran comedian Joe E. Brown in 1932.

In 1946, western star and singer Gene Autry was inspired to co-write the holiday classic Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane) after riding his horse in the parade where crowds of spectators chanted those very words.

In 1978, the annual event was renamed The Hollywood Christmas Parade, which coincided with a shift to its scheduling from Thanksgiving Eve to the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

This year, the emphasis of the parade was widened in focus to communities in celebration of the unsung heroes that have made a positive impact.

“We thought it was more important than ever to emphasize the community spirit,” said Laura McKenzie, who co-hosted with Dean Cain, Erik Estrada, former talk show host Montel Williams, and Elizabeth Stanton (World’s Funniest Animals).

“These are particularly trying times and we must stand together and honor all the people who have committed acts of bravery or self-sacrifice, but have not been celebrated or recognized,” noted McKenzie. “This parade truly defines a unified spirit and positive hope for the future. It is a time to come together and simply celebrate.”

Flash to the present, and the annual Hollywood Christmas Parade, which benefited the Marine Toys for Tots charity, took place on Sunday, November 26 and ran for three miles along Hollywood Boulevard, Orange Street, Vine Street, and Sunset Boulevard. This year, U.S. Army Col. Paris D. Davis had the honor of being the Grand Marshal for Hollywood Christmas Parade.

“I am honored and very grateful to be chosen as Grand Marshal of the Hollywood Christmas Parade,” said Col. Paris D. Davis in a statement. “I am especially pleased that this wonderful annual tradition raises awareness of the important work that Marine Toys for Tots are doing to bring gifts and holiday cheer to those less fortunate.”

On March 3, 2023, Col. Davis received the Medal of Honor for his actions on June, 18 1965 during the Vietnam War when he led a group of South Vietnamese forces and American soldiers during a nighttime raid and rescued several injured soldiers on the battlefield (while suffering several gunshot wounds himself). The Medal of Honor, created during Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, is our country’s highest military award, recognizing gallantry above and beyond the call of duty.

“The parade also brings goodwill to people from all walks of life throughout the world,” added Col. Davis. “It’s a good reminder about what America stands for, who we are, and all that we can accomplish when we come together.”

Marine Toys for Tots

Founded in 1947, Marine Toys for Tots delivers, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming “responsible, productive, and patriotic citizens.” It began as a charitable event in Los Angeles and, in 2022, raised a reported (and unprecedented) 24.4 million toys, books and games, among other items, to a reported 9.9 million children.

In recent years, Marine Toys for Tots has expanded to support children and families in need throughout the year.

“We have been with The Hollywood Christmas Parade for about a decade now, and it is extremely beneficial for us in exposing our brand and our mission,” said General James B. Laster, CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “The Toys for Tots program started in Christmas of 1947 when a group of reserve marines in Los Angeles got together and decided they wanted to do something to help economically disadvantaged children and their community. Many of those children were war orphans. When the word got out, it started spreading and by 1948 almost all reserve units had a similar program.”

In an interesting footnote, Bill Hendricks, who worked in the film industry, was the commander of the reserve unit that started Marine Toys for Tots. After he met the legendary Walt Disney and told him about the initiative behind the program, it was Disney who came up with the name Toys for Tots and the three little train cars in the logo.

There are two arms of the Marine Toys for Tots. The first is the Marine Core Reserves, who do the so-called “heavy lifting” during the holiday season. The second is the foundation that works year-round to oversee the logistics and the fundraising. Once General Laster took over the foundation in January 2020, the year-round literacy program was expanded to include the charity arm outside of just Christmas.

“Our new theme is a ‘year-round force for good,’ which includes a foster child program,” noted General Laster. “And The Hollywood Christmas Parade is a wonderful venue to educate and inform the American people and the public about what we do.”

An estimated 5,000 participants were in attendance for the annual parade festivities to witness a roster of celebrities, parade performers, bands, cars, colorful floats, equestrians, and larger-than-life character balloons. Among the celebrities and dignitaries at the parade were Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass; singer Dwight Yoakum; the pop group Aly & AJ; actors Brandon Routh, Ming-Na Wen, Denise Richards, Chris Kattan, Deidre Hall, Taytana Ali, Ernie Hudson, Andrew Walker and Craig Robinson; and singer and dancer Paula Abdul, who was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year Award.

The Hollywood Christmas Parade culminated with the appearance of the Jolly Old Elf himself, Santa Claus, and his reindeer, ushering in the holiday season.  The Battery Tour’s involvement in the Pause the World for Peace event was highly intentional. On a mission to break barriers and build bridges, AY Young was appointed by the United Nations as the Global Youth Leader for the Sustainable Development Goals in 2020, Generation 17 Youth Ambassador, and SDG Champion. AY has performed over 800 concerts powered entirely by the Battery Tour’s renewable energy. “We are all outlets for change,” says the artist. And driving positive change was a major theme between Pause the World for Peace event collaborators. 

Michel Pascal led a dance meditation and musical performance, seamlessly combining the serenity of meditation, and the joy of dance, promising a unique and transformative experience. Pascal, is co-founder of OMMM which is a movement to create a positive impact on individuals and communities worldwide through the practice of meditation, music, and multimedia content. Pascal, A.K.A “The Medicine Voice,” has been performing at Carnegie Hall since 2016, while working closely with marginalized communities, including prisoners and veterans. The concert featured a bilingual meditation guided by Juliana Klinkert, an esteemed meditation teacher known for her work at the Amity Foundation and in Hispanic communities.

Young and Pascal, along with the generations they represent, continue a wave of peace work built on the foundations of champions of peace like David Gershon (led 1986 Earth Run Torch of Peace), Ben Bowler (founder of UNITY Earth bringing cease-fires for peace), his eminence Shyalpa Rinpoche (currently building Universal Peace Sanctuary at UNESCO World Heritage Site for Peace), Jonathan Granoff (World Academy of Art & Science Fellow and UN Ambassador to the Nobel Peace Laureates), and Jeremy Gilley (founder of Peace One Day with Sir Paul McCartney message). A special military and police tribute for fallen heroes was featured. 

The Pause the World for Peace event, set in the Duffy Square section of Times Square, NY, is hosted by the Good News Corporation, whose founder Reverend Paul Sladkus has continued to be a leader in rallying movements for peace in action. Sladkus, who is an ordained all-faith minister, implores, “193 countries in the UN unanimously agreed to a CEASE FIRE EVERYWHERE, ACTS OF PEACE & LOVE, and WE CAN DO IT. Over the past weekend, DYF Entertainment
hosted two screenings of Sight

One was held in Flushing, New York, where over 600,000 Asians
and the American Chinese reside,

The Second Screening was at the GM Building on the
34th floor of DYF’s office in Manhattan.

DYF jointly hosted the Flushing Screening with a few influential
community organizations,

the second screening was hosted by

Beijing University Alumni Association,
and sponsored by DYF Entertainment .

About 200 people attended the two events.

Sight

is an American movie with Chinese heritage.
The movie is based on
Dr Ming Wang’s journey from China to America,
and how this journey has turned an ordinary Chinese
to an extra-ordinary human being.
At the height of his career as a celebrate doctor he doesn’t forget
to give back to the society
with what his talents, family and faith have brought him to where he is today.

Sight

celebrates the Chinese culture and the America dream
in its best manifestation.

In two hours, Sight
does well in clearly expressing its powerful message
of faith, love and hope through powerful imagery
and excellent story telling.

It tastefully blends lighthearted moments with an impactful drama

Sight, leaves the audience including myself, and the other guests,

feeling uplifted rather than deeply saddened.

It is an extremely touching film that gives positive and important insight
into how one can find harmony in their relationship with their past
and illuminate the present with the light of faith and optimism.
Dr Wang himself said it best,

if we can embrace our past we can have a better present.

What strikes me most is the seemingly simple chronological story wrapped
in a highly emotionally charged story telling language and imageries
centered around love, perseverance, optimism and faith in the face
of adversity.

It is based on the autobiographical book written by
Doctor Ming Wang named From Darkness to Sight—

A Journey from Hardship to Healing. It depicts the trials and
tribulations of his life through difficulties faced both in
his humble beginnings in China during the cultural revolution
and as a world renowned laser eye surgeon in the United States.

The juxtaposition between the past and the present lives of
Doctor Wang
is at the center of the film.

The 5-year old Kajal, an orphan in Calcutta whose eyes were intentionally blinded
by her stepmother who poured acid into her eyes while the girl was asleep
(a blind singing beggar would get more profit )

parallels with Dr Wang’s childhood traumatic experience when his only friend,
a young teen girl classmate was violently snatched away
by the local hooligans.

In both cases Dr Ming Wang could do nothing.
Kajal’s eyes were too damaged to be salvaged. When the stepmother found
that Kajal could not sing, she was then abandoned to die.

The young girl in Ming’s life simply vanished
(The movie reminds me of young Forest and Jenny ).
When Kajal was brought into Ming’s life,
the teenage girl’s image also appears in his dreams to hunt him.

Where is peace and healing?

The evil acts of humans are always matched by the greater benevolence of the Creator,

a message strongly vibrates throughout the movie,
otherwise how could it be explained
that another blind teenager orphan Maria, a fifteen year old girl from
Moldova in Eastern Europe,
was brought to Ming for surgery.

The first surgery failed. The second succeeded .
What has happened in between two surgeries?
It’s the same technology, the same doctor and the same hospital.

The only difference in between is Dr Ming Wang’s visit to the church
where Kajal was.

She was then playing with the other blind kids happily when the
heavy minded doctor walked in. Kajal placed a wooden beaded cross
in Ming’s hand when he leaves.
If a 5-year old could accept the fatality and move on, why can’t
Ming give the surgery of Maria’s eye another chance, this time with faith in God?

Miracle happen!

When Maria sees herself first time in 15 years she slowly murmurs:

I’m so pretty.

The crowds broke into tears. So did I.

Another scene in the movie that speaks directly to me
is Ming’s rejection by Jon’s Hopkins Admission Dean
simply because of his color- the guy didn’t even bother to look at Ming’s application.

I had a similar experience.

The first semester when I sat in the English class for a course of Medieval Allegory 101,
my young English professor simply wouldn’t believe I came up with the
“echo analysis”
saying the Red Cross in the Fairy Queen got lost in the Dark Forest
and walked in circles in the woods is because the dark woods symbolizes
the clouded dark mind that can no longer tell truth

(Una – the princess in the besieged fortress waiting to be rescued )
from falsehood ( Deussa who seduced the Red Cross and made him lose the way.)
When you only listen to yourself, it’s like you are listening to the echos
of your own voice. Falsehood is an echo,

l wrote. My thesis got a B! The English professor simply wouldn’t believe
a Chinese fresh from China could come up with such a “brilliant theory”.

My 5-year university fellowship requires me to get straight A！

I went to my own professor Prof. Mathewson (bless his soul)
who taught literary theory in comparative literature department and explained to him
how I got the image. I told him when I was 17 years old I graduate from high school
but there was no job nor university entrance exam to take, just like what Dr Ming
describes in the movie.

It’s a very bad period in Chinese contemporary history and we could do nothing
to change our fate. One of my aunts who worked in a remote mountainous county
next to Tibet asked me to be a replacement teach for two months because
their Chinese teacher was having a baby.

I went. These two months created the most unforgettable experience in my life!
Every day at 3pm, a train would pass by the mountain pass
we would all then swaRm onto the gate of the school
on the mountaintop to wave and call out to the train:

Train bring us out the giant mountains 火车 带 我们 出大山

Our voice was so young and loud it pierced through the fog in the mountains
and valleys and we would jump and run tumbling down to the bottom
of the mountain
where the train would stop, our voices echoed after us, rumbling like a
thunder storm chasing us.

The train was gone, the Hope was gone.

Prof Mathewson held my cold hands and my tears washed down my face.

My English professor, after learning the story, apologized
and changed my grade to A.

That day I learned two things:

1. fairness to all. 2. Forgiveness.

America is a very forgiving country.

Once you know you are wrong, you apologize.
People will give you and give you a second chance.

Dr Ming got enrolled into university in 1977 during
the first university entrance examination after a ten-year rupture
in the enrollment system,

I was enrolled in the following year 1978. 1977 and 1977
were actually only 6 months apart.

Dr Wang came to America in 1982 to study his Master and PhD;

I came to America in 1985 to study for my PhD
after I got my Master in China.

It is this kinship and parallel paths with Dr Ming

I identify and the movies.

The movie is like a mirror and my journey in china and to America
is getting played out.
The imageries and messages in the movie Sight
resonate with lots of audiences.

I am sure that its powerful imagery and universal message will elicit a
deep emotional response from viewers of all races, colors, ages and creeds.

The ghost of Dr Ming’s past that constantly haunts his thoughts and
affects his performance in the present left him after Kajal case.

The movie ends with Dr Ming Wang dancing with Kajal leading the way
… blind but happily accepting what life has brought her.

There is always a silver lining no matter how faint it is.
It keeps us living on with hope and love.

Sight keeps you feeling an overriding light of optimism throughout the
hardships shown on the screen.

Even though Sight deals with heavy subject matter, it does not weigh you down.
The movie always keeps a balance between the dark traumatic events
and the lighthearted optimism of the story.

For instance the pretty Chinese girl from Tsingtao who works in the bar
Dr. Ming and his fellow doctors frequent and the subsequent dating scenes
between the two
provide a balance to the haunted nights.

The uneasiness I have is that there are times where the screenwriter
does tend to lose touch with reality though and in certain places
the dialogue feels contrived and forced.

( The movie needs a voice over. The few characters in the lives of Ming
here in America and over there in China
just don’t sound authentically Chinese.)

It gives the impression that the character is a caricature of an actual person
and they are just being used as a tool or prop to express ideals unnaturally.

This overly deliberate approach is not needed, as the story itself naturally
and effectively evokes the desired emotions.

And I would cut fifteen minutes to shorten and speed up the movie.

If I had a choice and Liberty

I would leave out the family members of Dr. Ming Wang back in China.
Their story belongs to another movie.

This movie is about Dr Ming.

It’s his journey, a journey of sight and healing.

To bring them here, it feels like overkill.

What do Chengdu and NewYork have in common? What are the cultural similarities and differences between the two cities? Two Chengdu natives now living in New York-a senior president and a young talent on Wall Street-have their representative answers.

In 1985, Dr Yi was awarded a 5-year university scholarship from Washington University in St Louis, Beijing University’s sister university in America and Dr Yi was then one of the youngest faculty members teaching English at Beijing University, Dr Yi left China for America. T. S. Elliot, the most influential poet in 20th Century was a great inspiration to Yi, and to be able to study for her PhD in American Literature from the same school where T.S. Elliot studied and graduated was a dream come true! However, after obtaining her PhD, Dr Yi changed her career path to work for a financial executive search firm-Sullivan. She decided to apply her writing and rhetorical skills in “Star making” , ie, recruiting super talents for Wall Street firms in their initiative in building up Star teams for the newly booming Asian markets. In 1995, after three years of outstanding performance and having signed up 7 large contracts with 7 top Wall Street investment banks, Dr Yi was promoted to be the company’s first foreign and female vice president. On Sept 11, 2001, Dr Yi lost her office in World Trade Center Attack. In Feb 2002, after three best sellers on life on Wall Street and with the support of Citi Bank and Goldman Sachs’ 4-million dollar recruiting/management consulting budget, Dr Yi set up CGGroup to provide international recruitment and solutions services to Chinese and US global firms. In 2015, Dr Yi added media and PR services to CGGroup platform.

New York’s today is Chengdu’s tomorrow

When we contacted Dr. Jeannie Yi in New York and told her that we would launch a tale of two cities of Chengdu and New York during the opening of New York -Chengdu direct flight, she said it is a coincidence that her next book happens to be on the similar topic: A Tale of Two Cities: New York and Chengdu and the Ocean in Between. Most of her life was spent in the two cities. For her, “Chengdu is the birthplace, and New York is a place for her to be reborn.” She told the reporter, “Chengdu is at its best in economic development, and it is sometimes hard for Chengdu folks to see how fast the city is growing. Why? Chengdu people are so used to live leisurely on the land of abundance and leisure. Each time I flew back to Chengdu, I saw from the air how big the city has grown, it’s like a bird turning into a giant eagle. “ Dr Yi stressed that Chengdu people must look at the similarities of the two cities, ie, the immigration history and the innovative genes shared by New York and Chengdu in the past 350 years. Three hundred fifty years ago, New York was newly discovered and the immigrants from England and European countries swarmed into the city for a new life; three hundred and fifty years ago, Chengdu was wiped out in a war and the city was prowled by tigers and wolves until population from Hunan and Guangzhou were relocated to the city or 湖广填四川。That is one of the keys to success: diversity. New York’s today is Chengdu’s tomorrow. ”

The image of Leonardo DiCaprio in the” Wolf of Wall Street ” is in line with the public image of the Wall Street elite. To succeed in the world financial center, a world of white men in suits and ties, seems hard to imagine for an Asian woman, a Doctor in Literature, with no financial background. It was simply unimaginable. Dr Yi made it happen.

Cultural Diversity

Jeannie Yi, her Chinese name -Jinsheng Yi- tells the origin of her birthplace: Jin stands for Jin River, which is the mother river of Chengdu. She was born and raised on the river bank of Jinjiang where poets and silk-making thrived for centuries.

The day after she arrived at Washington University, she took the school’s special orientsal program of traveling around America for 7days by Greyhound for 19 dollars and visited New York and Disney. Yi immediately fell in love at the first sight with both Disney and New York. To her, New York is reality, Disney is fairy tale. Both are important. “Looking at Wall Street – the heartbeat of New York’s most dynamic and impactful money land, I told myself that this is the place I will work and go to Disney for vacation.”

After she graduated from Washington University, Dr Yi started looking for jobs on Wall Street. It was not easy. One day when she was leafing through The New York Times, a job advertised by Sullivan Consulting Group, one of the top HR firms in the United States, next to Russel Reynolds and Conferry., attracted her. The company was looking for a candidate with a degree from a business school; a minimum of three years of financial or banking experience; and could open the financial market of Hong Kong and Asia.

Her resume did not meet the requirements of the job specification, Jeannie still sent her resume over to the company. She called the company so many times that once the company’s receptionists heard her voice, they came up with a variety of reasons to decline an answer or a meeting.

Finally, Yi worked up her courage asking to speak directly to Mr Don Valely, President of Sullivan. On the phone, in one breath she said the following: “ I know I don’t have a business degree, nor any experience in the financial industry, but I have a Ph.D. in literature, that means I can learn, and the ability to learn is very important. I also believe that literature holds many keys to many human problems. Where there is a problem, there is a solution. Moreover, I am a woman and a minority in this country, and I have come across many difficulties. None of the difficulties stopped me and made me give up my dream. They only made me stronger. With the diverse cultures and background I bring along, I believe I could be an asset to your firm, only if you could give me a chance. If you are worried about the cost, don’t pay me. Pay me until I prove myself. ” Moved by her words, Don asked Yi for an interview.

After seven interviews, Yi stood out from hundreds of applicants and was hired.
It is almost an mission impossible for an Asian woman with a PhD degree in Literature to enter Wall Street. Jeannie Yi made it possible. In under three years, she became the first foreign female vice president in the company and her salary was high six figures. 2/3 of Wall Street talents were on her database.

On September 11, 2001, Dr Yi witnessed her office in World Trade Center fell in the smoke, and 11 colleagues who worked day in day out with Dr Yi went down with the tower. “Seemingly sturdy construction could be gone in a minute, I asked myself: what really matters? Maybe, recording history is equally important as making it. “ She resigned and started writing. In the following one and half years Yi wrote three books introducing Wall Street concepts to China that was opening up. The three books are – “Wall Street Challenge” , “Case Study of Wall Street Office Politics ” and “Walk into Wall Street: Financial English “. At meantime, she had two columns simultaneously and respectively on China Daily and China Press – From Schools to Jobs and From Rags to Riches. In addition, Yi co-authored an English book”The Haire Way” – the first such book about a Chinese business corporation and the making of a global leader. Haire is China’s refrigerator giant and remains to be number one brand of China. The book soon was recommended by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to American CEOs going to China to do business. The book was selected by Harvard Business School as China’s first case study, and the book rights were sold in three days to Korea, Japan and Germany. Jack Welch of GE recommended the book to Wall Street Journal; Forbes and New York Times also had favourite reviews. For the following 12 years, The Haier Way was sold extremely well on Amazon.com and was highly respected by world business leaders and entrepreneurs till today.

Dr Yi was invited by People’s Daily to address the relationship between super talents and super power

In the spring of 2002, with the support of Citibank and Goldman Sachs, Dr Yi established CG Group to recruit, train and recommend super talents who could open market where there is none to multinational banks and corporations in the wave of globalisation. At the same, she was enrolled in a training program- OPM at Harvard Business School for “re-charge”. The training focused on brand building and networking.

Building a financial bridge between Chengdu and New York

For thirty-two years living abroad, there were two cities that have always resided in Dr. Yi’s heart: New York and Chengdu, although her business took her to Hong Hong, Singapore, Japan, Dubai, Australia, Canada and many cities of China. In 2004, she was hired as one of the first six super talent introduction consultants of Sichuan Province, a province with 100 million plus population, and to today she has been in the position for 13 years. For years, Yi never missed any session of Western China International Expo, the second largest trade fair in China next to Guangzhou Trade Expo; and over the years she had brought more than 100 American companies’ representatives to Sichuan, and had introduced to Sichuan and Chengdu a total investment of more than 10 billion yuan. For all of this, in 2011, Dr Yi was elected by popular votes of Chengdu to be Chengdu’s “pride and joy” 你是我的骄傲, sharing the stage with Sichuan tycoons.

As the vice president of the Chengdu Overseas Friendship Association, Dr Yi cannot count how many Chengdu folks she had received from Chengdu when they visited New York. In her cell phone, there are more than 10 Chengdu promotional videos and city promotion PowerPoints. In New York’s political and business gatherings, she would often take out the Chengdu promotional films to play and recommend the city to her American friends, who called her “ambassador of Chengdu doing good will hunting anywhere any time.”

In May 2016, Chengdu’s first Global Innovation and Entrepreneur Summit Conference was to be held. Before the conference, Dr. Yi carefully reviewed the achievements of Chengdu’s innovation and entrepreneurship in recent years and produced with her team a Chengdu brochure from an American angel. After several rounds of lobby, she finally brought Danny Kadishson, director of New York Economic Development Department of New York Mayor’s office to the conference. She accompanied Danny throughout the conference and improved Dan’s assessment of Chengdu’s overall competitive edge. After Danny’s trip in Chengdu, two things immediately followed and sped up: Chengdu and New York’s direct flight route, and a Chengdu High Tech enterprise was selected by New York’s 1 billion technology incubation fund.

Without Dr Yi’s relentless efforts, Danny Kadishson would not have visited Chengdu. If Danny Kadishson hadn’t come to Chengdu to attend the mayors’ conference and assessed Chengdu’s IT and innovative spirit and strong infrastructure, there would not have had the direct flight so soon between Chengdu and New York! Without direct flight, any in-depth talks on bilateral tourism and sister city program as well as dual market penetration, would be difficult.

Afterward, Yi promoted a possible collaborative fund project of Black Rock, the world’s largest Asset Management Company of 5 trillion and Chengdu Xingcheng investment group, Chengdu’s investment arm, in the collaborative construction of the largest Chengdu city project- Chengdu Center. Following it, Yi assisted Xingcheng Group to engage in a potential investment project in Cuba’s tourism industry.
“It’s been a busy year, 2017,” said Dr Yi, “and rewarding.”

To end the year, in the month of December Dr Yi hosted 4 Food PR events in New York City on behalf of Chengdu Tourism to celebrate the direct flight. On Dec 5, a Chengdu Tourism-New York experience center opened inside a well known Chengdu restaurant called New Legend in Soho to showcase Chengdu food. UNASCO has named Chengdu the city of gastronomy 联合国命名的美食之都. It is Chengdu’s hope that the experience center will provide New Yorkers the first hand taste of Chengdu and fall in love with the city afterward. “It can be predicted that the Chengdu-New York direct route is bound to be a route on the tongues,” said Dr Yi. The center will hold various exhibitions all year long. “If Silicon Valley is regarded the world’s IT innovative center, New York is absolutely market innovative center- any product could be sold in New York, include Chengdu hot peppers.”

As a daughter of Chengdu, and also a senior business executive, who has worked for nearly 25 years for Wall Street and US global companies, Dr.Yi has never stopped making efforts to build a financial bridge between Chengdu and New York.
“When I retire, my daughter will continue the good work. And they must learn how to tell our story. This is the Chinese spirit- passing on the torch. “

Q： In your opinion, what are the similarities between Chengdu and New York?
A： The biggest advantage of Chengdu is its open mindedness , people from all over the world can find a space to live a life and work in peace in Chengdu. This is the same as New York, known as the “Big Apple”. The two cities are capitals of vitality full of immigrants, and that is the biggest similarity between the two. Anyone can make a living in the two cities that are totally open to the different cultures and thrive on diversity.

Q：What do you think of the similarities and differences between the two cities in temperament and style?
A : There are unique stories in every street and every alley of the two cities, unique to the city , yet all the stories have one thing in common: humanity. In the financial sector, New York is the world capital; but Chengdu invented the world’s oldest banknotes– Paper-money(交子).
