Roughly one in seven retirees in the U.S. rely on Social Security for nearly all their income, according to an AARP analysis. But these benefits don’t always come without Uncle Sam’s strings attached.

The taxation of Social Security began in 1984, following the enactment of Amendments in 1983, which President Reagan signed into law. Under that law, up to 50% of Social Security benefits could be added to taxable income, provided the taxpayer’s total income exceeded certain thresholds.

Some States Tax Social Security for Retirees

To worsen financial matters for retirees depending on Social Security to make ends meet, some states impose their own state income taxes on benefits. Fortunately, there aren’t nearly as many states that impose their own tax on Social Security as those that don’t.

“The list of states that do not tax Social Security is much longer than those that do,” said Brian Kuhn CFP, CLU, SVP and financial advisor at Wealth Enhancement Group. “And each state makes its own rules, which sometimes change, including, recently, in Missouri and Nebraska.”

Both Missouri and Nebraska have decided to stop taxing Social Security benefits in 2024.

Only 10 states do or will continue to tax Social Security benefits in 2024.

“They are Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and West Virginia,” Kuhn said. “Each state has tax provisions that could provide deductions for individuals below certain thresholds or ages, making each state unique.”

How Much Do Retirees Save on Social Security Taxes in These States?

Kuhn pointed out that you can calculate how much you’re saving on taxes — assuming you live in a state that does not tax Social Security benefits — by looking up the effective rate of tax you paid to your state for all taxed income sources and applying that to your total Social Security benefits.

“So, for example, if your effective rate in your state was 5%, and you received $30,000 in Social Security benefits, that would be a savings of $1,500,” Kuhn said.

From a big picture perspective, the amount saved among retirees who are not taxed on Social Security benefits by their state of residence is quite impressive.

“In Missouri, for instance, retirees are looking at a collective annual saving of around $309 million,” said Jeff Rose, CFP, founder of Good Financial Cents. “Over in Nebraska, it’s about $17 million. That’s a lot of money that retirees get to keep in their pockets instead of it being drained away by state taxes.”

New Advances In Technology can Help Those with Parkinson’s

Every single year, approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement.

Many Parkinson’s disease symptoms involve losing the ability to control your muscles and movement, making daily activities like performing at work, writing and even getting dressed difficult or even impossible. This loss of movement control and reliance on others can make people feel as though they are missing out on important aspects of life and relationships with spouses, family and friends.

When Parkinson’s medications still work but become less effective, deep brain stimulation therapy, or DBS Therapy, is a treatment option to help control some of the movement symptoms of Parkinson’s like shaking, slowed movement and stiffness.

DBS Therapy uses a small pacemaker-like device, placed under the skin of the chest, to send electrical signals through very thin wires to an area in the brain that controls movement. To provide relief, these signals block some of the brain messages that cause the movement symptoms of Parkinson’s.

For many people with Parkinson’s, DBS can offer a new lease on life, allowing them to live more independently and pursue their passions, whatever they may be.

on 50,000th Corporate Angel Network Patient Flight.  Good News speaks to Peter Fleiss – Corporate Angel Network’s Executive Director Emeritus

On the evening of April 14, 2016, one-year-old cancer patient Baron Yerby will fly home to Atlanta after a treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering.  However, this flight will be quite different than the others he’s taken after treatment. Instead of flying on a crowded commercial plane with the potential for immune deficiency issues, he and his parents will fly in comfort, free of charge, on a corporate jet, belonging to NCR, a Fortune 500 Company headquartered in Atlanta. The flight was arranged by Corporate Angel Network, (www.corpangelnetwork.org <http://www.corpangelnetwork.org>  <http://www.corpangelnetwork.org> ) the only charitable organization in the United States whose sole mission is to help cancer patients access the best possible treatment for their specific type of cancer by arranging free travel in the empty seats of corporate jets. It’s also their 50,000th patient flight.

When Baron was three months old, his parents, Jonathan, a college professor, and Casey, a social worker, became concerned about an odd glow in his right eye. He was soon diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer. The tumor in his right eye was huge and there were smaller tumors in the left eye. After receiving chemo in Atlanta, all seemed to be going well, but 30 new tumors suddenly appeared in Baron’s left eye. The family was told that all treatment options had been exhausted – except for one that was performed only at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC.  The procedure directs a high dose of chemo right to the eye tumor by going up through Baron’s groin and prevents the effects of systemic chemo. He has already lost sight in his right eye but currently the tumors have stopped growing. However, due to his age and his high risk of reoccurrence, trips to New York will go on for the foreseeable future. The Yerbys discovered Corporate Angel Network through a social media community of parents facing similar diseases.  These flights greatly reduce their emotional stress and enable patients to avoid crowded, germ-laden airports and planes.
