CKD is a progressive condition and patients with CKD have an increased risk of having heart disease.[1][3] However, most patients don’t know they have CKD, in large part because it is a “silent” disease, with most patients feeling no symptoms until the disease has progressed.[4] In fact, while approximately 15% of US adults are living with CKD, 9 in 10 are unaware they have CKD.[1]

Now, a new treatment option has been proven to help slow the progression of CKD – a huge scientific innovation for CKD patients at risk of progression with and without T2D. This approval is the most significant advancement in the treatment of CKD in over 20 years.

Because CKD may be overlooked until symptoms appear at advanced stages, it is especially important to be aware of risk factors and the serious complications that can occur.[1][5]

CKD tends to get worse over time, so the earlier treatment starts, the better the patient outcomes are. [3]

On May 19, Neil Skolnik, M.D., Professor of Family and Community Medicine, Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, will be available to discuss the latest treatment option approved by the FDA. Dr. Skolnik will also discuss risk factors and the importance of early detection of CKD.

‘The Man in the Red Bandana’

Please excuse these ramblings of a proud, old father who lost one the
brightest lights in his life. This light was my dear, dear son, Welles
Remy Crowther, who at age 24 was killed when the South Tower of the
World Trade Center collapsed on him and so many other innocent victims
of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Welles was an equities
trader with Sandler-O’Neill and Partners working on the 104th floor of
WTC2. He was also a volunteer firefighter and member of Empire Hook &
Ladder Co. #1 in Upper Nyack, NY. Somehow he made his way to the 78th
floor Sky Lobby after the plane had impacted his building, and there
he found a group of people who were afraid to move. They had huddled
together and were waiting for the rescue workers to get to them. They
felt if they moved around they might fall through a hole in the floor
and be lost as the visibility was almost nil due to the dust and
smoke.. There were many injured people around them, screaming with
pain, unable to extract themselves from under the slabs of marble that
lined the hallways that had them trapped. My son, Welles, wearing a
red bandanna (which he always carried in his back pocket) to protect
himself from the dust and smoke, found them and told them that he knew
where the only open stairway was and if they could walk they should
get up now, help those whom they could, but that there were people
they could not help and that they had to go right away. His words as
quoted to us by some of the individuals who were there and survived
were “follow me, I know the way”. Welles made three trips from the
78th floor down to the 61st floor where the lights were still on and
the air was clearer. He told them to keep going down the stairs, but
he kept going back up to escort more people down. In all we have
confirmed three trips he made between the floors before he went all
the way down to the lobby. He was in the lobby ready to go back up
with a fire lieutenant and two other firefighters with the tools
necessary to lift some of the heavy debris in order to rescue more
victims. But the building did not stand and we lost our beautiful son
who cared more for others than for his own life.

There is so much more I could tell you about him, and you can read
about Welles at CrowtherTrust.org., a website for the Welles Remy
Crowther Charitable Trust, a charity we set up in his memory as a
memorial to a young man who saw his duty and did it. You can also

People tell us that we raised our son too well. I respond that he was
born with the software installed. The good Lord put Welles on this
earth knowing that he would have to call on him. Unfortunately, it was
just 24 years into so promising a life.

But, we started The Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust to bring
some good out of a terrible tragedy. Through it we have been able to
work with many other agencies by making grants and gifts to help young
people become exemplary adults, whether for educational, health
related, or recreational needs. Again, I refer you to our website to

proud, old father thanks you for having read about a true civilian

GRANTS AWARDED TO THE JUNIOR JAZZ FOUNDATION AND SIX STRINGS HEROES AT JEFFERSON BARRACKS

 The Les Paul Foundation, whose mission is to honor and share the life, spirit and legacy of Les Paul by supporting music education, engineering and innovation as well as medical research, announced that it has awarded grants to the Junior Jazz Foundation, Litchfield Performing Arts and Six Strings Heroes at Jefferson Barracks, three different organizations but with a shared vision of the legacy of Les Paul. Throughout his life, Les Paul was an innovator who changed the face of the music industry with the inventions of multi-track recording and the solid body electric guitar.  He supported music education, engineering, innovation as well as medical research.

The Junior Jazz Foundation of Hilton Head, South Carolina will receive funding for its annual Junior Jazz Camp. With funding from the Les Paul Foundation, a permanent jazz guitar program will be added to the camp.  Students will learn about Les Paul and honor him by performing his music.  The camp will also hold annual Les Paul evenings at The Jazz Corner.

The Junior Jazz Foundation (JJF) is the philanthropic outreach effort of the Jazz Corner and under the umbrella of the prestigious Community Foundation of the Low Country, a quality organization with tremendous experience in managing the philanthropic work of individuals, families and businesses. Six String Heroes at Jefferson Barracks in O’Fallon, Missouri is also the recipient of a Les Paul Foundation grant and will receive funding to provide free guitar lessons and guitars to injured U.S. military veterans. Typical students have Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), amputations or traumatic brain injuries suffered during combat.

Playing the guitar helps with memory, physical dexterity and provides a positive social connection through music. Les Paul served in the U.S. military during World War II and often made time to visit injured veterans.  Six String Heroes at Jefferson Barracks is a non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and assist injured U.S. military veterans through free guitar lessons and guitars. The Litchfield Performing Arts of Litchfield, Connecticut will award need-based scholarships with the funding from the Les Paul Foundation. Students come from over half of the states in the United States and 20 foreign countries to attend the sessions. Nicki Parrott, a member of the Les Paul Trio will also offer a Master Class dedicated to Les Paul’s music and life, and give a public performance of Les’ music and arrangements during the camp’s sessions. Litchfield Performing Arts (LPA) is a charitable organization founded in 1981 whose mission is to change lives through the arts. LPA does this through various programs including the Litchfield Jazz Festival, Litchfield Jazz Camp and Project Poetry Live!’

Litchfield Jazz Fest is held annually the second weekend in August at the Goshen Fairgrounds in Goshen. The festival does not just offer top-notch jazz music, but is a true outdoor summer experience for the entire family.
