Earlier this week, Henry Kissinger, a former U.S. Secretary of State and national security advisor, passed away at the age of 100. While he left mixed feelings on his actions over the course of his career, there’s no question that Kissinger had left an influential mark on politics

Kissinger was actually the first Jewish Secretary of State when he was sworn into office, which would later become a pressure point to the Nixon administration, becoming a key factor on said pressure with Israel when it came to withdraw from approaching Cairo and Damascus during the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

But the interesting thing is how Kissinger’s passing actually relates to current politics. Antony Blinken, also Jewish, now serves as Secretary of State, and is actually visited Israel this week to meet with leaders over the ongoing ceasefire in the war against Hamas.

The reason this comes up is because of the pressure that now comes from the Biden administration, though on a much different level than what Nixon’s did, in regards to the message they’re trying to convey. Not to mention the significance of their involvement in the 2024 Presidential election, which will no doubt draw both pro-Israel voters, as well as millions of Jews and Christians.

With us now to talk about Kissinger’s legacy and how it has these interesting ties with the modern political scene is Jonathan Feldstein, a key Israeli figure and founder of the Genesis 123 Foundation (based on Genesis 12:3). His expertise in what’s happening in Israel should prove useful with this discussion. We welcome him to the show.

Potato pancakes are shallow-fried pancakes of grated or ground potato, flour and egg, often flavored with grated onion or garlic and seasoning. Potato pancakes may be topped with a variety of condiments, ranging from the savory (such as sour cream or cottage cheese) to the sweet (such as apple sauce or sugar), or they may be served ungarnished. Potato pancakes are sometimes made from mashed potatoes to produce pancake-shaped croquettes.

Backround and History

Potato pancakes are commonly associated with traditional cuisines of Luxembourg , Latvia (as kartupeļu pankūkas), Lithuania (as bulviniai blynai), Austria, Belarus (as draniki), Germany (e. g. as Kartoffelpuffer), Poland (as placki ziemniaczane), Ukraine (as deruny), Ashkenazi Jewry (as latkes or latkas (Yiddish: לאַטקעס, Hebrew: לביבה levivah, plural לביבות levivot)), Hungary (as tócsni), Slovakia, Persia and the Czech Rep. (as bramborák or cmunda), although other cuisines have adopted similar dishes. It is also the national dish of Belarus. In Ukrainian, Belarusian and Russian cuisines, potato pancakes are commonly known as deruny (Ukrainian: деруни) or draniki (Russian: драники, Belarusian: дранікі). Throughout Germany, potato pancakes are also very common under the names Reibekuchen or Kartoffelpuffer, and they are eaten either salty (as a side dish) or sweet with apple sauce, blueberries, sugar and cinnamon; they are a very common menu item during outdoor markets and festivals in colder seasons; a traditional favorite in southern Indiana during holiday festivities.

The Rösti from Swiss cuisine differs insofar as it never contains egg or flour.

In the North-East of England (particularly County Durham), there is a popular dish known as tattie fish– “tattie” being the local slang for potato, and “fish” because the pancake resembles a deep fried piece of fish. The pancake consists of flour, eggs, shredded potatoes and onions. Some people add tomato or cheese to the mix, depending on taste.

A form of potato pancake known as boxty is a popular traditional dish in most of Ireland. It is made in a similar way but using more starch.

The Swedish version of unbound potato pancakes is called rårakor. When prepared with a batter of wheat flour, milk, egg, and shredded potatoes and fried like thin pancakes, they are called raggmunk, the word “ragg” means crispy and “munk” derives from the Swedish “munkpanna”, which is literally translated as donutpan. Both kinds are enjoyed with fried pork and lingonberry jam.

The British also brought the potato pancake to Zimbabwe, Africa when Zimbabwe was a colony of Britain. They are still eaten today, where they are affordable.

Hanukkah Tradion

Latkes (Yiddish: לאַטקע) are traditionally eaten by Jews during the Hanukkah festival. The oil for cooking the latkes is symbolic of the oil from the Hanukkah story that kept the Second Temple of ancient Israel lit with a long-lasting flame that is celebrated as a miracle. Despite the popularity of latkes and tradition of eating them during Hanukkah, they are hard to come by in stores or restaurants in Israel, having been largely replaced by the Hanukkah doughnut due to local economic factors, convenience and the influence of trade unions.

The word “latke” itself is derived (via Yiddish) from the Russian/Ukrainian word латка meaning “patch.” The word לביבה leviva, the Hebrew name for latke, has its origins in the Book of Samuel‘s description of the story of Amnon and Tamar. Some interpreters have noted that the homonym לב levav means “heart,” and the verbal form of l-v-v occurs in the Song of Songs as well.

Latkes need not necessarily be made from potatoes. Numerous modern recipes call for the addition of ingredients such as onions and carrots. Prior to the introduction of the potato to the Old World, latkes were, and in some places still are, made from a variety of other vegetables, cheeses, legumes, or starches, depending on the available local ingredients and foodways of the various places where Jews lived.

(A Self-Quarantined Jew Whose Mother
Would Never Let him Miss Passover)

INTRODUCTION

Next year in Jerusalem is a familiar and comforting phrase for most American Jews. In that brief passing moment at the end of every Seder, at least one person at the table (reclining in his or her chair with their pants button open daydreams… ”Hmm, could the whole family actually go to Israel next year? That would really be something. Well, actually… I am not sure Grandma would be up to it and that would be really expensive.”

Well, its next year and most of us are not in Jerusalem. While that isn’t unexpected, did any of us reclining Jews sit before the sponge cake and think … Next year in front of the computer, in sweat pants? Alas, here we are… Passover 2020 in the COVID-19 era. Most Americans are separated from family and friends, many are self-quarantining in their homes, some states have banned nonessential travel and to put the real hard truth out there… many of us left our Haggadahs at Grandma and Grandpa’s house last year.

The other day, my sister Merrill called. We caught up on each other’s family news and then she made a great suggestion… “we should all FaceTime on Passover for a quick Seder since we can’t be together.” When that call was over, The Eleventh Plague was born! After all, it wouldn’t be right if Grandma couldn’t see her grandchildren on Passover… and who among us would feel whole if a year passed without dutifully fulfilling our roles as Leader, Participant or Group?

Some of us braved the supermarket, wearing an embarrassing combination of masks or bandanas on our face and purple dishwashing gloves or Ziploc bags on our hands. Some of us had groceries delivered, only to wipe each item down with an antibacterial wipe before it came into the house (I think we have discovered a new category of Chametz … unsanitized groceries!).

All that we are missing is a quick and easy way to remember our Exodus from the land of Egypt, so I offer this English-only, family friendly, egalitarian text as a way to fulfill our obligation – without sharing germs or leaving the house. Tonight, it is not the miracle of the oil which allows us to embrace our history but the miracle of technology. Despite these challenging times and the distance between us, technology allows us to be together ‘virtually’ and continue our traditions.

Oh and one final note… the government has asked Elijah NOT to visit our homes this year as he is considered a non-essential worker and they cannot spare the N95 mask he would need to do his job. Sorry Elijah… I hear that liquor stores are delivering now, so I guess you will have to order in and adapt – just like the rest of us!

THE SEDER BEGINS

Leader: Tonight, we come together with family and friends to recount the exodus of the Jewish people from the land of Egypt.

Group: Let our past be a beacon as we forge a better future for ourselves, our family, our community and for all people throughout the world.

LIGHTING THE CANDLES

Leader: May these flames shed light on our table and into our hearts so that we may see the way forward to better tomorrows. [The candles are lit ]

Group: Praised are all who follow our commandments and who kindle the lights of the Passover festival.

RETELLING THE STORY

Leader: Tonight, we retell the age old story of a Pharaoh in ancient Egypt who enslaved the
Jewish people, who took away their freedom and equality and replaced it with harsh tasks and overwhelming odds.

Group: God, upon seeing the suffering of the Jewish people, saved us from this terrible fate with an outstretched arm and a mighty hand.

Leader: During this time of slavery, God chose Moses to lead the Jews to freedom. Moses went
before Pharaoh and demanded… “let my people go” … but Pharaoh refused.

Group: In order to punish Pharaoh and make him open his heart, God sent ten plagues upon the land of Egypt. As the torah teaches us never to celebrate the suffering of others… even our enemies … we merely recount them.

Leader: After the tenth plague Pharaoh allowed the Jews to leave Egypt, but as we left he changed his mind and sent his army after us. Seeing that Pharaoh’s heart was still cold and his troops unable to recognize right from wrong, God saved us once more.

Group: As the Egyptian army followed, the Jews came to the Red Sea, a seemingly impassable body of water. Miraculously, the waters of the sea parted and the Jews were able to walk across. As Pharaoh pursued, God released the parted water, washing away the Egyptian army and allowing us to find our freedom.

THE ‘FOUR’ QUESTIONS

Leader: Our children are no small part of this observance. We are here tonight so that they may learn from our past and help us build a better future. We read ONE question, whose FOUR answers shed light on the meaning behind some of this evening’s customs.

Child: Why is this night of Passover different from all other nights?

Child: On all other nights, we eat either leavened or Matzah, tonight – only Matzah.

Child: On all other nights, we eat vegetables of all kinds, on this night we eat bitter herbs.

Child: On all other nights, we do not dip vegetables even once, on this night we dip them twice.

Child: On all other nights, we eat in an ordinary manner, on this night we eat with special ceremony.

TOASTING TO ‘LESSONS LEARNED’

Leader: Tonight we pour one cup of wine, but take four sips to remind us of the importance of the lesson to be learned from the story of our exodus from the land of Egypt.

Participant: The first, for Thanks, signifies our appreciation for life, our freedoms and that we are surrounded by loved ones. [All take a sip ]

Participant: The second, for Responsibility, signifies our understanding that each of us must look inside ourselves for the courage to “truly see” the world around us. Only then, when we have shed our filters and bias, can we truly help others. [All take a sip ]

Participant: The third for, Engagement, signifies our commitment to removing our barriers and uniting to bring about freedom and equality for all. Just as we were freed from bondage in ancient Egypt and given the opportunity to start anew, so must we ensure that others have the same chance. [All take a sip ]

Participant: The fourth, for Hope & Faith, signifies our commitment to the idea that one day, everyone will be free. [All finish their cup ] THE SEDER PLATE

Leader: The items on our Seder plate and the Matzah before us, are symbols of tonight’s
story.

Participant: Karpas, or parsley, reminds us of hope and spring’s greens. We dip these in salt water to remind us of the tears shed by all who have faced adversity while pursuing hope. [The group tastes ]

Participant: Marror, or horseradish, reminds us of the bitterness that can be found in our past, and even our present. We break Matzah, or unleavened bread, as a symbol of fellowship and eat the two together to remind us that sharing our bitterness allows us to emerge a stronger people. [The group tastes ]

Participant: Charoset, a mixture of apples, nuts, sugar, cinnamon and wine, reminds us of the hard labor and bricks used by the Jews in Egypt. We eat Charoset as we cannot appreciate the sweetness of freedom, until we remember the toil of our ancestors. [The group tastes ]

Participant: Zro’a, or shank bone, symbolizes sacrifice the strength and fortitude of our ancestors as they endured servitude in the land of Egypt. [Point to the Zro’a ]

Participant: Beitza, or hardboiled egg, was a regular festival offering brought to the Temple in ancient times. We eat Beitza to remind us that we were not always able to make such offerings after the destruction of the Temple. [The group eats an egg ]

THE SEDER CONCLUDES

Leader: The Seder service now concludes, its rights observed, its purpose revealed.

Group: Peace for us and all people. This is our hope, that next year all may be free. Bless this gathering, this meal, our community and everyone throughout the world who sees the good in themselves and others.

Leader: Let us all say…

Group: Amen.

1. Let’s move on to discussion about the March 2 historic elections in Israel. If not for the Coronavirus dominating world news, this election in Israel might be the lead story in world news. Can you summarize what’s at stake?
Answer: There have already been two deadlocked elections in the past year. Israel’s right-of-center Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and left-of-center former Army Chief-of-Staff Benny Gantz. Each control a voting bloc – Left (Gantz) or Right (Netanyahu), but due to the deadlock and the controversial centrist Avigdor Lieberman, who so far has refused to join with either side, neither voting bloc has been able to put together a majority coalition, which is, after all, a pre-requisite for forming a government.
1. Can you explain to our viewers/listeners the difference between the Israeli form of government and the U.S. government?
Answer: Of course. Israel has a rather unwieldy parliamentary system with a whole bunch of smaller parties. It’s a system in which the leader of the most popular party must form a majority coalition by appealing to smaller parties that will join his coalition. Of the smaller parties, Lieberman’s was a ‘major minority’ and he is insisting on a government without religious parties, a so-called “government without God”.
1. What are Netanyahu’s options in cutting a deal with Lieberman?
Answer: He and Lieberman have had a very shaky relationship in the past and if he were to cut a deal with Lieberman, it would likely involve forcing a bold compromise between Lieberman and the religious parties.
2. What are likely options for governing coalitions? Couldn’t Lieberman kiss and makeup, cut a deal, and join Netanyahu?
Answer: It is possible. Despite Liberman’s uncompromising style of speaking, he has made many political compromises in the past.
5. Tell us about the Trump Deal of the Century and the land annexation and the agreement to help the Palestinians?
Answer: The map looks a bit like a Gerry mandered congressional district, and if a Palestinian state were to be created, it would be a serious security threat for Israelis who travel those roads. Having said that, the plan will not be accepted by the Palestinian Authority, because it demands that they stop paying salaries to the families of imprisoned terrorists, it demands that they accept Israel as the Jewish state, and it demands that they disarm. These are all reasonable demands to create a true atmosphere of peace, but they won’t accept it.
1. Tell us about your book, “Trump and the Jews” and the parts that deal with what we’re seeing play out in the Israeli election scene.

In September 2008, the company changed it’s name from the R.A.B. Food Group to the Manischewitz Company, under which it operates today.

It all started with Rabbi Dov Behr

The B. Manischewitz Company, LLC traces its beginnings back to the spring of 1888, when Rabbi Dov Behr Manischewitz opened a small Matzo bakery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

A humble beginning

It was largely from his spiritual concerns that he set out to make matzo or unleavened bread for Passover, first for his family and a few friends, but soon for many of the devout Jews of the city. His bakery soon evolved into a successful business, innovative and prosperous––though never inattentive to the spiritual needs of its customers.

From small bakery to booming business

By the end of the century, demand for his matzo had become so great that Rabbi Manischewitz turned to the use of gas-fired ovens, replacing the older coal stoves being used by other Jewish bakers. The newer ovens allowed for much more careful control of the baking speed, insuring a consistent and standard quality to the matzos.
He also introduced portable traveling-tunnel ovens, and was the first to package his matzos for shipment to places beyond the immediate neighborhood of his bakery. He even began shipping his matzos overseas, to such diverse places as England, Japan, France, Hungary, Egypt and New Zealand. His bright, clean bakery would become a model for future kosher bakeries, both in America and abroad.

Matzo on the move

In 1932, the company built a second factory. Located in Jersey City, New Jersey, the plant quickly became the model for all new machine-made matzo bakeries worldwide. Closer to a much larger Jewish population than that of Cincinnati, the new factory also made distribution of the company’s product more efficient and quickly enlarged its customer base. The Manischewitz label was soon dominant in ethnic grocery stores and delicatessens in the larger East Coast cities. Thanks to the technology and efficiency of the New Jersey factory, Manischewitz was able to close down the Cincinnati facility altogether.

Same quality, more quantity

In 1940, Manischewitz produced its first Tam Tam cracker. It signaled the initial departure from its line of matzo products. About the same time, in a licensing arrangement, Manischewitz wines began to be sold throughout the country.
In 1954, the company purchased a processing plant located in Vineland, New Jersey. The Vineland facility, which has now ceased operations, manufactured all of the company’s canned and jarred products, including old familiar favorites like gefilte fish, chicken soup and borscht. The plant was primarily a hand-pack processing operation stressing careful attention to quality and flexibility. Workers there packed about 2,000,000 lbs. of fish and 1,000,000 lbs. of beets each year.
