On Saturday, September 27, world-renowed choreographer Jody Sperling will lead an interactive workshop on ecokinetics, a dance practice cultivating the relationship between humans and ecological systems. People of all ages and abilities welcome!

On Saturday, October 4, master naturalist and dendrologist Carey Russell will lead a tree workshop and tour of Central Park, showing how a basic knowledge of trees can help us develop a closer relationship to the incredible life around and above us.

The Army Reserve will celebrate its 114th birthday with the theme, ‘America’s Army Reserve and its People, Shaping Tomorrow!’ Throughout history, Soldiers have leveraged their professional skills while serving in uniform, adding substantial value and depth to the force, with skills, education and expertise developed in the private sector. As the Army Reserve looks ahead to the future, it will be one of the most experienced and diverse forces in our Nation’s history.

The service is celebrating the generations of men and women who embrace their roles as “Citizen Soldiers,” continuing a proud and distinguished legacy of service. Army Reserve Soldiers have integrated their military service with civilian careers, family, and personal lives, succeeding and thriving in the workplace and on the battlefield. They are doctors, lawyers, academics, scientists, engineers, cyber specialists, police officers, first responders, transportation specialists, administrators, and more–and they’re at the top of their fields.

Since 2001, more than 420,000 Army Reserve Soldiers have been mobilized and routinely deployed in 23 countries around the world. From natural disasters to national emergencies, the Army Reserve has never failed to answer the Nation’s call.

Daniels holds a bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics (Computer Science) from Carnegie Mellon University, a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) as well as a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. Lt. Gen. Daniel’s military career has been a mix of active and Reserve duty service and she describes herself as an “Army brat.” Her father retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Corps of Engineers.

During National Women’s History Month in March, the Army Reserve joins the nation to celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of women.

Women’s History Month stands as a reminder of the strength the Army Reserve has as a diverse all-volunteer force.

Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Raquel A. DiDomenico will share how she became the first female First Sergeant of a Combat Engineer Company in 2015, before combat-designated units were opened to women. DiDomenico will also highlight the achievements of other women in the military.

Of the many accomplished women within the Army Reserve, perhaps the most noteworthy example to date is Lieutenant General (LTG) Jody J. Daniels the Chief of Army Reserve and Commanding General, U.S. Army Reserve Command, the first woman to lead the Army Reserve and the first female commander of any Army component. In this role, LTG Daniels is paving the way for the next generation of female Army Reserve leaders.

Army Reserve diversity is about understanding the value individuals bring and optimizing what they offer to build high-performing and cohesive teams. The Army Reserve is stronger because of this diversity.

The Army story isn’t complete without the historic achievements of women Soldiers and Civilians, who have played a major role in defense of our Nation since the Revolutionary War. Women of every race, class and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our Army.

To continue this story, the Army Reserve provides leadership opportunities to all Soldiers to enable them to thrive in their careers and build successful lives:
• Since 2016, the Army has trained more than 3,200 women Soldiers into Infantry, Armor and Field Artillery Occupations
• 36% of the Department of the Army Civilian Workforce are Women
• 95 Women Have Graduated Ranger School since 2015

Daniels assumes duties as the 34th Chief of Army Reserve and 9th Commanding General, United States Army Reserve Command, July 28, 2020, after most recently serving as the Commanding General, 88th Readiness Division, Fort Snelling, Minnesota. She was born in Rolla, Missouri and is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University where she earned a B.S. in Applied Mathematics (Computer Science). She holds a M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) as well as a M.S. in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. She completed a Civil Affairs deployment as the G-5, operations officer, Kosovo Forces/Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, Operation Joint Guardian. She also deployed to Iraq and served as the chief of plans and integration and later as the director for intelligence (J2) for the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq. In her civilian career, Daniels was previously the Director of Advanced Programs for Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Technology Laboratories (LM ATL). Prior to that, she was the Director of the Contextual Systems Laboratory and was a manager and engineer in LM ATL’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. She has served on the Defense Advanced Research Programs Agency Information Science and Technology (ISAT) Review Board, on the ISAT Steering Committee, and Drexel University’s Computer Science Department Advisory Board. Daniels is a graduate of the Engineer Officer Basic, Military Intelligence Officer Basic and Advanced, and the Civil Affairs Officer Advanced courses.
