ATLANTA, GA — The Captain Planet Foundation recently announced the launch of the 2026 Green Heart STEM Challenge, welcoming its largest cohort to date with nearly 5,000 students, 132 educators, and 71 schools across 11 states participating. 

The Green Heart STEM Challenge is delivered through a hybrid model, with in-person programming in metro Atlanta, Houston, and Miami, alongside virtual participation that enables schools in additional states to engage fully. This structure supports deep, place-based learning in core communities while expanding national access.

Designed for students in grades 6–9, the Challenge blends STEM learning with real-world problem solving, guiding students to identify environmental challenges in their communities and develop practical, implementable solutions. It follows a rotating, four-year cycle focused on EARTH, WIND, FIRE, and WATER, ensuring students explore a broad range of environmental systems and solutions over time.

The 2026 Challenge features EARTH, with students exploring issues such as soil health, tree canopy, composting, and food waste. Educators onboard students to the Challenge platform, where teams form, research, and begin building solutions rooted in local needs.

“What sets this Challenge apart is that students are mentored and funded to implement their winning ideas,!” said Leesa Carter-Jones, President and CEO of Captain Planet Foundation. “They’re not just learning about environmental challenges, they’re designing solutions and being held accountable for real outcomes.”

Since its launch, the Challenge has shown growing, measurable impact. In recent cycles, hundreds of student teams have progressed from ideas to formal project plans, with an increasing percentage advancing to implementation. Past winners have secured additional funding, expanded beyond their schools, and built long-term community partnerships, including teams in Atlanta and Houston continuing work well beyond the Challenge timeline. Across cohorts, student-led projects have tackled composting and food waste, erosion control and reforestation, water quality, repair-and-reuse systems, and circularity efforts reducing fast fashion and single-use waste.

The Challenge is supported by Accenture, Amazon, Delta Air Lines, Georgia Natural Gas, Green Mountain Energy, and Susan J. Klein, among others. Accenture employees also serve as volunteer mentors and project managers, helping student teams refine ideas, develop budgets, and prepare for implementation through the Challenge’s Idea Incubator.

Entering its fourth year, the Green Heart STEM Challenge continues to show what’s possible when students are trusted with real responsibility, and supported to turn ideas into action.

The LAGRANT Foundation is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization whose mission is to increase the number of ethnic minorities in the fields of advertising, marketing, and public relations by providing scholarships, career & professional development workshops, mentors, and internships/jobs to African American, American Indian/Native American, Asian American/Pacific Islander and Hispanic/Latino undergraduate and graduate students. Our goal is to open the proverbial “door” for minorities by providing the necessary resources and tools not commonly available to many minorities entering the fields of advertising, marketing, and public relations.

Seeking to enhance the academic and professional development of undergraduate and graduate students pursuing careers in these fields, the activities The LAGRANT Foundation are as follows:

Scholarships

The LAGRANT Foundation annually provides scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students who are attending accredited institutions and are pursuing careers in the fields of advertising, marketing, or public relations.

Career Development

The LAGRANT Foundation annually coordinates a career & professional development workshop for its scholarship recipients. The workshop provides the recipients with an opportunity to speak with industry professionals about their field of interest and specialty. Additionally, workshops are held in major college markets nationwide for students outside of the scholarship recipients.

Internship Programs

The LAGRANT Foundation provides internships to undergraduate and graduate students at selected advertising, public relations, and marketing agencies, as well as publishing companies and communications-related businesses. Internships consist of on-going, hands-on communications experience and training for at least a three-month period.

Mentors

The scholarship recipients will have a chance to team-up with mentors who provide them with opportunities for experience, exposure, guidance, and career development. The mentors are advertising, marketing and public relations professionals who volunteer their time twice a month to meet in-person with students and provide academic and professional guidance.

Professional Development

Scholarship recipients receive on-going professional development from The LAGRANT Foundation, until students obtain a position in advertising, marketing, or public relations. Development includes, resume writing, interviewing skills, internship and job search skills, grammar review, writing skills, business etiquette, interpersonal skills, tips on company politics, professional appearance and providing necessary materials such as a briefcase, business card holder, resume folder, portfolio case and access to computer training.

NEW YORK, April 29, 2010Mara Manus, Executive Director of The Film Society of Lincoln Center, announced today a star-studded lineup of presenters confirmed for the 37th Chaplin Award Gala honoring two-time Academy Award winner and renowned actor and producer Michael Douglas and taking place at Alice Tully Hall, Monday, May 24, 2010. This esteemed event will include many of Douglass most celebrated friends and collaborators such as Danny Devito, Erika Christiansen, Milos Forman, Curtis Hanson, Tobey Maguire, Steven Soderbergh, Barbara Walters, as well as Douglass wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and his father, the legendary Kirk Douglas, with a special performance by Michael’s longtime-friend singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett plus film clips commemorating his lauded career. The evening will culminate in the presentation of the Chaplin Award. Also attending was Lois Robbins, Actress/Ocean council member for charity OCEANA.

The event will start with VIP cocktails with the honoree in the Hauser Patron Lounge at Alice Tully Hall followed by a seated dinner in the glass atrium. The presentation of the award will be in the Starr Theater with tributes by those mentioned above with more guests to soon be announced. Over the years, The Film Societys Annual Chaplin Award Gala has become one of the most prominent cultural affairs in the film industry and having the opportunity to bestow this honor on as passionate and successful an actor as Michael Douglas, highlighted by the caliber of Michaels peers and friends who are equally as excited to be apart of the evening, is truly thrilling for all of us here, said Mara Manus, Executive Director, The Film Society of Lincoln Center.

The Annual Gala began in 1972 and honored Charles Chaplin who returned to the US from exile to accept the commendation. Since then, the award has been renamed for Chaplin, and has honored many of the film industrys most notable talents, including Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, Laurence Olivier, Federico Fellini, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, James Stewart, Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep and last years recipient, Tom Hanks.

An actor with over thirty years of experience in theatre, film, and television, Douglas produced his first feature production in 1975 with the Academy Award-winning “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. Since then, as a producer and as an actor-producer, Michael has proven to have an intuition for choosing projects that reflect changing trends and public concerns such as, “The China Syndrome” and Traffic. Over that past three and a half decades Douglas has also starred in many box-office blockbusters and pop culture favorites, including; “Romancing the Stone”, “Fatal Attraction”, Wall Street, The War of the Roses, Disclosure, The American President, The Game, Wonder Boys, Dont Say A Word, The In-Laws, The Sentinel, You, Me & Dupree, King of California, and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. Michael has also been a behind the scenes force for well know hits with stellar casts, like Flatliners, John Woos Face Off, John Grishams The Rainmaker and One Night at McCools. In 1998 Douglas was appointed a United Nations Messenger of Peace. He is a strong advocate of nuclear disarmament and the control of small arms, and he sits on the Board of Ploughshares Fund. In 2009 Michael joined the project “Soldiers of Peace,” a movie against all wars and for global peace as well as “Nuclear Tipping Point,” about the journey that brought four prominent architects, Henry Kissinger, Sam Nunn, William Perry and George Schultz, of America’s nuclear deterrence policies, to a startling conclusion: it’s time to eliminate nuclear weapons altogether. Douglas has also hosted 10 years of the “Michael Douglas and Friends” Celebrity Golf event that raised over $5 million dollars for the Motion Picture and Television Fund.
