Porter Bibb, a Visionary and Devotee of Southampton, Dies at 87

Porter Bibb is a man who lived many lives.

He was a journalist, an investment banker, the first publisher of Rolling Stone magazine and an executive producer for the Maysles Brothers. He wrote books, covered the White House for Newsweek and studied economics. He was a trend predictor, a raconteur and a creative visionary, while also a gentleman, humble and kind.

And he deeply cared for Southampton.

“I just see Porter as this Renaissance man, because he really did a lot of different things — and I think he was interested in everything,” his wife, Sandra Bibb, said last week. “He was interested in the world around him.”

On January 4, Porter Bibb died from complications of fourth-stage prostate cancer while surrounded by his immediate family at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. He was 87.

“He was very unusual and I’m very lucky to have had him for a big brother,” his sister, Elizabeth Bibb Yamashita, said. “We’re going to miss him, but he had a great life, so that’s some consolation. His three beautiful daughters, they really are terrific. So that’s his real legacy.”

David Porter Bibb III was born on April 2, 1937, into a quintessential Kentucky family in Louisville — where its members included the first and second governors of Alabama, according to his sister. He was the eldest of six, she said, and often took on a father-like role with his younger siblings, who all looked up to him.

“He was always the big brother who was off to college and being very cool,” she said, “and he would come swooping in with all sorts of very sophisticated things going on.”

Bibb was attracted to characters, Yamashita said, which began at Louisville Male High School, where he was a member of the Athenaeum Literary Association. It was essentially a fraternity, she recalled with a laugh — and there, he became good friends with Hunter S. Thompson.

“I can remember Hunter sitting at our kitchen table, yacking with my mother. My mother actually loved him,” Yamashita said of the boy, who would go on to become a renowned author and journalist. “Porter was always drawn to interesting people and very much had a kind of a global perspective very young.”

Bibb went on to study history at Yale University, earned graduate degrees from Harvard Business School and London School of Economics, and even enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, his sister said.

He was athletic, excelled at skiing and tennis, and loved the ocean. He ran five New York City Marathons, his wife said, and religiously participated in Southampton’s Polar Bear Plunge.

“We used to always tease him about being Dorian Gray, because he never looked his age,” Yamashita said. “We always said, ‘Oh, there’s a picture up in the attic somewhere that’s getting very old,’ because he just, literally, until 87, he looked 20 years, 30 years younger. He was just very, very dashing.”

Sandra Bibb first crossed paths with her future husband more than three decades ago, when they both worked in investment banking. He had awkwardly announced that he had four girlfriends — and she made it clear that she wasn’t interested.

But one Christmas Eve, that changed for her. She had invited him to a party at her home and, after everyone left, he took her out to dinner around the corner and came back to her apartment to help her tidy up.

“I was like, who does that?” she said. “Nobody does that unless you’re really good friends. It just changed the dynamic.”

They wed on June 8, 1997 — his third marriage — and became a blended family, she said. He is survived by his three daughters — Hilary Porado, Addison Porter Walker and Zoe Bright — three grandchildren, and all five of his siblings — Richard, Susannah, Walter, Robert and Elizabeth.

“He’d always write me notes, and he was always thoughtful and generous and sweet and kind and lovely,” his wife said. “He was a very, very sweet, romantic guy. I’m going to miss everything about him.”

A summer resident of Amagansett for most of his childhood, Bibb devoted his free time to his community in Southampton, where he lived for nearly 40 years. Leveraging his media, entertainment and technology experience, he was instrumental in keeping the National Public Radio affiliate, WLIU-FM, afloat after it parted ways with Stony Brook Southampton.

And toward the end of his life, he poured his energy into saving the windmill on the campus — pushing for its move to the heart of Southampton Village where it once stood, according to his colleague in the endeavor, architect Siamak Samii.

“His kindness is something that I think we can all take a lesson from because you can never go wrong with that,” he said. “Life is not easy, and there’s a lot of ups and downs, and it’s these kinds of kindnesses that makes it more bearable and somehow sweet.

“It’s like the hello that you say on the sidewalk to somebody passing by and make their day,” he said. “That’s the kind of person Porter was.”

Every September, the Army Reserve joins the nation in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, reflecting on our shared history as Americans and recognizing the rich mosaic of people and cultures who build and strengthen this branch of service. The Army Reserve story cannot be told without reflecting on the remarkable contributions made by Hispanic American Soldiers. From the Spanish-American War to the Korean War and beyond, Soldiers of Hispanic and Latin Descent have not hesitated to defend this nation and contribute their talents and skills to local communities.

Whether their heritage can be traced to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean or Central and South America, these Soldiers have answered the call to service, defending America with great honor, dedication, and distinction. The Army Reserve draws its strength from the diversity that makes up America’s melting pot, and by recognizing our history, we are building a future of a stronger Army Reserve that allows all Soldiers the opportunity to be all they can be.

One of the many benefits of Army Reserve service, is having the flexibility to pursue a Civilian career while also being part of something bigger than yourself. Soldiers can advance their careers and skillsets through various trainings and educational offerings. For example, Sergeant First Class Rodney Roldan, a Noncommissioned Officer, joined the Army Reserve to enhance his media and acting skills through the Army’s public affairs program. And when he’s not reporting in the field, recording radio shows, or working with special operations, Sgt. 1^st Class Roldan is on the big screen, working in television and film.

On Wednesday, September 4, join Sergeant First Class Rodney Roldan in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with the Army Reserve. SFC Rodney Manuel Roldan

AGR Operations NCO, 300TH Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

SFC. Rodney M. Roldan is the AGR Operations NCO for the 300th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment located in Fort Gillem, G.A. Prior to this assignment, he served as the AGR Training and Operations NCO for the 209th Broadcast Operations Detachment.

SFC Roldan was born and raised in New York, NY. After high school, Roldan joined the U.S. Navy where he served as an Electricians Mate on several sea going commands, to include the U.S.S Kaufman (FFG-59), as well as shore duty for special detachments for ten years, rising to the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. His Navy service included two sea service deployments in the Mediterranean and Arabian Seas, several humanitarian operations in the Caribbean Sea, humanitarian operations in the Ukraine and Black Sea, and a member of the inspection teams that enforced the blockade of weapons into Iraq.

After serving ten years active duty in the U.S. Navy, Roldan joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Los Angeles, CA while pursuing a career in performing arts. He attended Defense Information School at Ft Meade, MD where he became a U.S. Army Broadcast Journalist. Shortly after graduating from Defense Information School, he deployed to Afghanistan, as a field reporter for American Forces Network (AFN) Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Rodney also deployed to Baghdad, Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve as well as several exercises in Poland and Germany.

In his civilian life, he is a television, film and stage actor with current membership in both professional acting unions; Screen Actors Guild-American Federation for Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and Actors Equity Association (AEA). Since he began his acting and filmmaking career, he has worked on several film, television, commercial, and stage productions that include, Imperium (2016), Fatal Attraction (2022-2023), Storm of Suspicion (2023), The Wire (2006), A Gifted Man (2011), and the stage productions’ M*A*S*H (2006), and Ghetto Babylon (2013).

Roldan’s education includes Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Communication and Web Media Design from the University of Maryland University College, and Certificate of Completion of Stella Adler Studio of Acting’s 2 Year Conservatory Program in Performing Arts, Master of Arts in Visual Communication from Liberty University and is currently working on his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Liberty University.

In 2015 he began working on a World War II documentary project, which sparked his interest in writing, narrating, and directing documentaries. Since then, he has worked on several projects to include most recently, ‘Country and Courage’, which is a feature-length documentary that looks at the history of Veteran’s Day, the experiences of U.S. Army veterans, veteran programs, and the works of William Shakespeare in relation to the mindset and trauma experienced by soldiers. Country and Courage have won several awards to include a Communicator award in 2022, three Telly awards in 2022, and a Davey award from the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA)

HS is estimated to affect as many as 1 in 100 people worldwide and black people are twice as likely to have HS.

• WHAT: Imagine living with chronic pain that feels like hot coals burning in your skin and experiencing boils in some of your most intimate areas? For the estimated 1 in 100 people living with the debilitating skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa (HS)*, it’s everyday life. “The Beacons: Illuminating HS Stories” will feature the stories of six people living with the condition, and how it impacts everything from their day to day life to relationships and beyond (you can watch the trailer here.) o About Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS): Hidradenitis suppurativa, or HS, is a condition that causes small, painful lumps to form under the skin, often where skin rubs together, such as the armpits, groin, buttocks, and breasts. The lumps heal slowly, recur, and can lead to tunnels under the skin and scarring. Once considered a rare condition, it is now thought that as many as 1 in 100 people are affected by HS.
o Those living with the condition struggle with more than their ability to feel confident, and it affects things like the ability to put clothes on, sit down, participate in their favorite hobbies, and pursue partnership and intimacy.

Willard Manus (born September 28, 1930) is a Los Angeles-based novelist, playwright, and journalist. His original play “Dietrich” just enjoyed a limited Off Broadway engagement at the famed Triad Theatre to packed houses and excellent reviews.

Accompanied by pianist Russell Daisey and starring Cindy Marinangel, “Dietrich” is a based on a true story. Set in May 1960, the play takes place when Marlene Dietrich returned to the Berlin stage for the first time since fleeing the Hitler regime in the 1930’s.

Inside her dressing room at the Tatiana Palast Theater, Dietrich weighs whether to go through with the live performance despite threats on her life by Nazi sympathizers who resent her for having spent much of World War II entertaining American soldiers on the front lines. To them, Dietrich is a turncoat; a traitor who deserves to be shot and killed on stage.

Willard Manus is a playwright, journalist and novelist. He is a member of the playwrights/director’s unit of The Actors Studio. His most recent plays are “Joe and Marilyn: A Love Story,” “Frank and Ava” (now a motion picture) and “Who Killed Comrade Rabbit?” His best known book is Mott the Hoople (1966), the novel from which the British 1970s hard rock band derived their name. Manus was born in New York. He is the author of This Way to Paradise: Dancing on the Tables, a memoir of life in Lindos, Rhodes, Greece, from the 1960s to the 1990s. Additionally he has had a dozen other books published, most recently a young adult novel, A Dog Called Leka, which deals with a young lad sailing the Aegean islands in the company of an exceptional dog. More than two dozen of his plays have been produced in Los Angeles, regionally and in Europe. He has been a member of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association since 1981.

Cindy Marinangel (Marlene Dietrich) is a Lifetime Member of The Actors Studio and a graduate of the Chicago Second City Conservatory. Marinangel was recently seen in “Beverly Hills Christmas,” a holiday film starring actor Dean Cain that airs seasonally on UPtv. She is a voice over talent, an avid ballroom dancer, animal advocate and producer of film, theatre and dance shows.

Russell Daisey is an internationally acclaimed pianist, singer and songwriter. He performed at The First Hiroshima International Peace Summit (on stage with the Dalai Lama); the Palais des Congres in Paris; before President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; as well as Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Ellie Wiesel, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Betty Williams.

Solo play honors legendary performer, patriot and feminist Marlene Dietrich

New York (Sept. 5, 2018) – “Dietrich,” a compelling solo play about iconic German actress
Marlene Dietrich, will be featured as part of the New York New Works Theatre Festival.

“Dietrich” will perform Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. The festival is being held at the
Acorn Theatre, 410 W. 42 St. in Manhattan. Ticket prices range between $29.25 and $62.25. To

Written by Willard Manus, directed by Michael V. Doane, accompanied by pianist Russell Daisey
and starring Cindy Marinangel, “Dietrich” is a based on a true story. Set in May 1960, the play
takes place when the actress returned to the Berlin stage for the first time since fleeing the
Hitler regime in the 1930’s. Inside her dressing room at the Tatiana Palast Theater, Dietrich
weighs whether to go through with the live performance despite threats on her life by Nazi
sympathizers who resented her for having spent much of World War II entertaining American
soldiers on the front lines. To them, Dietrich is a turncoat; a traitor who deserves to be shot and
killed on stage.

“Dietrich” (formerly known as “Marlene”) celebrated its world premiere at the Brickhouse
Theatre in Los Angeles, debuted in New York at the Hudson Guild Theatre as part of the New
York Theatre Festival’s annual Winterfest and had a successful showing at The Triad, an OffBroadway
theatre in Manhattan.
The play was chosen for the New York New Works Festival among hundreds of plays submitted
for consideration. Every submission was reviewed by a panel of Broadway producers, many
who have won Tony and Emmy awards for their work.
