Ken Sutcliffe says he “was born” to help others – a mentality that led him to join the army and become a firefighter after his time with the military ended. Unbeknownst to Ken, some studies have shown firefighters and Veterans are each twice as likely to develop ALS – also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease – than others who haven’t served in these professions.[1],[2] Now, as someone living with ALS, Ken pursues his passion for helping others in a different way by spreading awareness of this devastating disease.

ALS is a rapidly progressive, neurodegenerative disease, with no cure. People living with ALS eventually lose their ability to walk, write, speak, move, swallow, and breathe on their own.[3] In honor of First Responders Day on October 28, we’re shining a light on those who heroically risk their lives helping others, like Ken, to inform them of this disease, their risk, and its impact.

On October 19, Ken Sutcliffe, a retired firefighter, U.S. Veteran, and MTPA patient ambassador will be available to share his personal story of living with ALS, discuss how he’s helping to spread awareness of the disease, and share how others living with the disease can help support the ALS community. Ken will be joined by his wife and primary caregiver, Andi Sutcliffe.

·       ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that can progress rapidly without treatment.2
·       An estimated 5,000-6,000 Americans are diagnosed with ALS each year.[4],[5] ·       Initial symptoms like muscle weakness, loss of balance, and slurred speech can be subtle at first, and because of this, it can take up to 12 to 14 months to be diagnosed with ALS.[6],[7] ·       The majority of people with ALS succumb to the disease two to five years after diagnosis, but disease progression can vary significantly across the patient population.[8]

Celebrated every November, National Family Caregivers Month is a time to recognize and honor caregivers across the US. In a study by the National Alliance for Caregiving, about 50% of 111 cancer caregivers reported feeling “highly stressed” due to the intense and demanding nature of caregiving, and there is growing evidence this could potentially affect the mental health of the patients as well.1,2

In particular, the mental health of patients with blood cancer, including those living with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and their caregivers, can be impacted due to the physical, emotional and social effects of the disease.3,4

CLL is the most common leukemia in adults.5 It’s a type of cancer that starts in cells that become certain white blood cells (called lymphocytes) in the bone marrow. 5 The cancer (leukemia) cells start in the bone marrow but then go into the blood.5

As with other illnesses, COVID-19 has exacerbated the mental health impact of blood cancer on patients, as well as placing an added strain on caregivers. In a recent survey of 100 patients with blood cancer, 96% of patients reported their blood cancer has impacted their mental health since the start of the pandemic in 2020, and 72% of patients said they rely most on their family members to provide them with emotional support for their blood cancer.

Hematologist and oncologist Dr. Ken Miller of Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, who will discuss the impact of blood cancer, including CLL, on the mental and emotional health of both patients and caregivers, and share resources to help meet this important need.

Dr. Ken Miller is a hematologist and medical oncologist at the Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Miller has served as the Director of Outpatient Oncology and was a member of the Thoracic Oncology Group at the University of Maryland. He also previously served as the Director of the Yale Cancer Center’s survivorship clinic and the Director of the LiveStrong Survivorship Center of Excellence at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He has authored five books, including: Choices in Breast Cancer, Medical and Psychosocial Care of the Cancer Survivor, Excellent Care of Cancer Survivors, Global Cancer Care, and “The Breast Cancer Book”. Dr. Miller’s wife Joan is a two-time cancer survivor and together they have lectured nationally and internationally on the role of empathy in medicine. They have three children and four grandchildren.

Bridgefest 2017, now in its second year under the auspices of Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc. presented A Bridge Together, a special concert and Newport Jazz Festival® “extra” that connected Jazz, African Beats and Indian Carnatic music, on Thursday, August 3, at 6:30 pm on the Quad Stage at Fort Adams State Park. Admission was free.

This pre-Newport Jazz Festival event showcased the multicultural connections between music and movement. The two-part concert featured dance segments by 17-year old twins, Riya and Sara Kapoor, accompanied by a Carnatic music orchestra featuring musicians from India. Guru Swati Bhise was the Conductor and Choreographer for the music and orchestra arrangement for this dance segment. The jazz quartet was led by award-winning guitarist Rez Abbasi and West African compositions, directed by the noted West African choreographer and dancer, Maguette Camara, rounded out the evening.

Fusing Indian, African and American dance and music while demonstrating the shared cultural roots that these traditions have in common, A Bridge Together raised the question: “Are we so different after all?” The answer was up to the audience after seeing and hearing this upbeat, visually exciting melding of cultures.

Part I was an exploration of music from West Africa, India and the US. To start, there was “The First Beat,” blending Indian Classical and traditional West African genres with instruments such as the mridangam and tabla played interactively with the West African djembe. Western musical traditions eventually got a turn with familiar sounds from guitar and saxophone. The result was a harmonious, unexpected cohesion, which made the point that together we can choose to thrive.

Part II introduced the expressive, athletic Kapoor sisters, whose intense study of Bharatanatyam has continued for more than a decade in New York City. The Indian-American sisters first appeared on stage at age 15 at their debut event at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Newport Festivals Foundation CEO/founder George Wein was in the audience when Riya and Sara made their debut and was determined to bring some of the magic he saw on stage to Newport.

“These young women are tremendous,” said Wein. “The dances are very intricate and beautiful, but what I loved is how they brought jazz into these very traditional art forms. They’ve modernized the dances in a wonderful way while adding a delightfully different perspective to jazz music.”

The first element, “The Invocation,” amazed audiences with heavy percussion created by multiple drums, while dancers clad in traditional costumes in shades of saffron and eggplant danced in the Bharatanatyam style, a challenging series of steps performed in accordance with ancient rules. Here every muscle, every facial expression, every bell trilling from the dancers’ ankles, became part of the performance. “The First Foils” and “The Ten Apostles of Peace” revved up the sound and excitement with a full Eastern orchestra, vocal chanting and jazzy beats. The songs and dances celebrated Shiva, the Hindu god known as the “cosmic dancer.” The evening reached a crescendo with “Bridge Together,” which focused on the dancers with slow, easy movements to begin and progressively rose to leaps, pirouettes and bold percussive beats. The choreography was enhanced with improvisation by the jazz artists and African drummers.

A Bridge Together, like many of the Newport Festivals’ events, aimed to educate and entertain audiences by introducing them to cultures from distant places and celebrating what unites us all here in Newport: the love of music and movement, the inspiration it provides and sharing the experience.

A Bridge Together capped off Bridgefest, which ran from July 31 to August 3, between the iconic Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals. Bridgefest was founded in 2009 by the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Newport County to celebrate Newport’s musical community. Other Bridgefest events will be announced in the coming weeks.

The sold-out Newport Folk Festival (www.newportfolk.org) took place at Fort Adams State Park July 28-30 followed by Newport Jazz Festival presented by Natixis Global Asset Management (www.newportjazz.org) August 4-6 at Fort Adams and the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino.

Special guests include the young great saxist Grace Kelly on Nov. 7, 8, and 11 and top swinging clarinetist Ken Peploski on Nov. 9 and 10. For a change of pace, newcomer Chris Smith will be on drums on Nov. 12th.

The music harkens back to the 30’s and 40’s in France to the Hot Club Quintette of Django and Grappelli, romantic days in ‘ol Paris with swing music in the dance halls and streets while campfires lit up the sky on the outskirts of Paris with gypsy life. Music and family was and still is King ! Hot Jazz has more than survived, is vibrant and causing a sensation all over the country.

The musicians will again be on tour as well (see schedule below) and at their NY home, Birdland Nov. 7-12 before returning home to Paris and gypsy community Forbach, France, near Germany. It’s real, it’s romantic, it’s exciting…let your heart lead the way. The Festival was co-founded by Maestro Ettore Stratta.
