The T.S. Monk Sextet’s highly anticipated live album with seven songs is characterized by the steady pulse and groove that the world has come to know and love as the “T.S. Monk Sextet Sound”.

Monk, also known as “Toot”, leads his sextet with an innovative and dynamic approach. Since 1992, the drummer has worked exclusively with his co-players, making the sound of the sextet incredibly tight. When they roll out their arsenal, they soar and swing, and are indeed exciting to hear. In that regard, it might be quite surprising to learn that this is Monk’s very first live album!

The seven songs on the album are taken from two performances at two similar jazz rooms over a two-year period; three are from “Harlem’s Jazz Shrines Festival: Jazzmobile presents Minton’s Playhouse” at Ginny’s Supper Club on May 7, 2014, while others were recorded at Marians Jazzroom in Bern, Switzerland on April 24, 2016.

Drummer, percussionist, composer, producer and bandleader, T. S. Monk has taken his place in the pantheon of jazz royalty, to which he was born. The swing is DNA inherited and absorbed in this master drummer’s persona.

Monk’s sextet consists of some of the best jazz musicians in the business, each bringing something special to the table. Willie Williams on tenor saxophone is the original member of the sextet, who came up under the tutelage of Grover Washington, Jr. Additionally, we have the Chicago native, Kenny Davis on bass, who has worked with notables such as Cassandra Wilson and Kevin Eubanks, trumpeter Josh Evans, multi-reedist Patience Higgins, guitarist Dave Stryker and pianist and composer Helen Sung, a 2021 Guggenheim Fellow.

MSG, a leader in delivering state-of-the-art, cutting edge technology to viewers, announced today that it will telecast the March 24 Rangers-Islanders matchup from Madison Square Garden in 3D, the first network hockey telecast ever produced in 3D. MSG will also be the first network in America to offer home viewers a live 3D sports telecast. In 1998, MSG was the first regular provider of sports coverage in high-definition television, producing all Knicks and Rangers home games in that emerging format.

The Rangers will host a special viewing party of this historic telecast at the Theater at Madison Square Garden that will include appearances by popular Rangers alumni Mark Messier, Adam Graves, Ron Duguay, Nick Fotiu, Ron Greschner, Dan Blackburn and others, as well as fan contests and giveaways . Tickets to the 3D screening are $20 and available at newyorkrangers.com via Ticketmaster. MSG HD subscribers with 3D compatible televisions will be able to watch the telecast on a separate channel offered by Cablevision, and MSG is in discussions with other providers. Longtime Rangers voice Kenny Albert will call the play-by-play, former Ranger Dave Maloney will serve as analyst, and Al Trautwig will serve as television host for the evening.

The game will be shot using 3ality Digitals image-capturing technology, which integrates with existing broadcast equipment for pixel-perfect 3D imagery. 3ality Digital, which has more than a decade’s worth of development work behind its systems, has been the technology of choice behind a number of recent 3D sports productions, including BSkyB’s January Premiere League Soccer broadcast, the first live 3D broadcasts of NFL and college football games shown in theaters, and the 2010 Sony Open golf tournament.

Gamecreek Video will provide a separate high-definition mobile video production unit for the game, working with 3ality Digital camera rigs and image processing systems. In the Theater at Madison Square Garden, RealDs 3D stereoscopic Cinema Processing System will enable the audience to view the game in 3D via eyewear, screen and filtering technology.

A provider of advanced 3DTV-capable technology, Harris Corporation, an international communications and information technology company collaborating with MSG on the telecast, supplied NetVX encoders and signal processing equipment that will be used to ensure synchronous transport of the 3DTV signals from Madison Square Garden to the network operations center.

For a while, everything seems fine. Business at McLaughlin’s is booming, and it’s fun to own a piece of a hot destination. But, Roddy begins to notice that Kenny is acting paranoid and wired, and the restaurant is attracting an unsavory clientele—specifically, mobsters. Then, Danny begins to notice that the bustling restaurant is losing money, big time. When Roddy and Danny finally confront Kenny, what they learn is unthinkable. Their old friend has gotten them into debt, to the tune of a quarter million plus interest, through his deal with a monster: Grange, a grossly obese, menacing loan shark who brings intimidating protection with him.

In a flash, matters turn from unthinkable to terrifying. When the odious Grange tries to make friends with little Sandy Dolan, sealed with a kiss, Roddy loses his tight grip on his formidable anger. MARK RUBINSTEIN grew up in Brooklyn, New York, near Sheepshead Bay. After earning a degree in Business Administration at NYU, he served in the U.S. Army as a field medic tending to paratroopers of the Eighty-Second Airborne Division. After his discharge, he went to medical school, became a physician, and then a psychiatrist. As a forensic psychiatrist, he was an expert witness in many trials. As an attending psychiatrist at New York Presbyterian Hospital and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell, he taught psychiatric residents, psychologists, and social workers while practicing psychiatry. Before turning to fiction, he coauthored five books on psychological and medical topics. He lives in Connecticut with as many dogs as his wife will allow in the house. An Interview with Mark Rubinstein, author of MAD DOG HOUSE

1. Does being a psychiatrist affect your writing? Does it give you greater insight and a better ability to understand and write about people?

I can’t conceive living life constantly analyzing situations and people, looking for deeply hidden motives and strivings. So a clinical view of the world would be intolerable and, frankly, would drive me crazy. I take things as they come and react as a human being. Maybe later, upon reflection, I’ll have a better understanding of what went on in a particular situation.

But writing fiction is a process. When working on a manuscript, I don’t take a psychiatric view of what a character might say or do because he or she is a certain “type.” That being said, it’s likely that my training, education, and psychiatric experience exert some influence on my writing—but not in any purposeful or conscious way.

2. Mad Dog House is a thriller filled with violence and its effect on our psyche and our families. Why did you write a novel about our darker impulses?

Violent—even murderous—impulses reside within all of us. You see them whenever you watch news items about riots or wars or street violence. You certainly see bloodlust when people rubberneck while passing an accident or go to some sporting events (for example, mixed martial arts competitions, boxing matches, hockey games, football games, wrestling contests) or when you read some of the world’s greatest literature or view the foul arc of history. So to pretend that violence isn’t part of human nature is disingenuous. Sex and violence sell, and there’s a reason for that. Despite all my years of training in medicine and psychiatry, and no matter what kind of peaceful life I lead, I’m still intrigued by violence. And so are most people, whether they admit it or not.

3. Your novel involves people reverting to their past ways. Can people ever really change?

We’d like to think people can change, and in some superficial ways, we can. But deep, long-lasting personality templates are very difficult to leave behind. Once you’ve become whoever you are, it’s a permanent way of being.

As a psychiatrist working with patients trying desperately to change the way they interact with others, I know it’s a difficult task. There is among virtually all people a need to endlessly repeat the old ways, a perverse tendency to revert to the familiar patterns of childhood, no matter how ungratifying or even hurtful they’ve been. Some people can change to one degree or another, but deeply engrained ways of perceiving and dealing with the world (sometimes called “character armor”) are not easily renounced. As William Faulkner wrote in Requiem for a Nun, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”
