Jean Shafiroff, philanthropist, television host, and author of Successful Philanthropy: How to Make A Life By What You Give, hosted an outdoor luncheon at Swiftys at The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, FL in honor of American Humane.

The luncheon was attended by a group of guests and supporters of the work of the Organization.  Those in attendance included Jean Shafiroff (Board Member), Dr. Robin Ganzert (Executive Director), Ava Roosevelt, Kim Dryer, Kathleen Gannon, Sharon Jablin, Pamela O’Connor, Lauren Roberts, Janet Levy, Pamela Wright, Elizbeth Steinberg and Rashmee Sharma.

It’s always critical for people with heart failure (HF) to take steps to keep healthy and to try to reduce the risk of hospital visits – but now, as these patients face increased health risks and hospitals are overburdened, it’s more important than ever.

HF is a chronic, progressive condition that can change the structure of the heart so it is unable to pump enough blood to the body. Patients with HF are inherently at increased risk of hospitalization for symptoms like shortness of breath or swelling – often in the legs, ankles, feet and/or abdomen. Hospitalizations for HF are a hallmark of disease progression, or worsening of the condition.

Annually, HF accounts for about 1 million hospitalizations. That’s about 2 HF hospitalizations every minute in the U.S.

A visit to hospital for heart failure can average between five and ten days – further, around one in four patients are re-admitted within 30 days of discharge, and one in ten may not survive.

These recurrent experiences can profoundly disrupt the lives of patients and caregivers.

For people living with heart failure, hospitalizations can be a recurring part of life. But finding the right care plan with a health care provider can help people actively manage their condition to reduce their risk of HF hospitalizations.

Kim, for example, is a patient who used to experience frequent HF hospitalizations before changing her treatment regimen. Looking back, this hardworking single mom was referred to a lung specialist by her primary care physician because of a persistent cough that wouldn’t go away. At just 32 years of age, she was shocked to be diagnosed with chronic heart failure, a condition that would lead her to endure frequent heart failure hospitalizations over the next several years.

Fortunately, Kim was able to work with her health care team on a plan, including a healthy lifestyle and treatment regimen that would help manage this chronic condition. In fact, there are steps HF patients can take to help reduce the risk of a HF hospitalization. These can include following a low-salt diet, getting an appropriate amount of physical activity, and maintaining the treatment regimen advised by their health care provider.

Beth Davidson, a heart failure nurse practitioner in Nashville, TN, and President of the American Association of HF Nurses, will be available to discuss the prevalence of HF, a condition affecting over 6 million people in the U.S., and projected to affect approximately 8 million by 2030. She can discuss the seriousness of HF hospitalizations, HF symptoms, treatment and lifestyle tips that may help patients or a loved one manage the condition. Kim will also share her story and how she is successfully managing her HF today.

The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences (AAHS) is an establishment of reviewers specializing in the reviewing of hotels, resorts, spas, airlines, cruise lines, automobiles, products, restaurants and chefs. It is most notably known for its reviews on the hotels, resorts, and travel industries. The Academy started of as a restaurant rating bureau, founded in 1949. Organization

The Academy is based in New York City and is directed by Joseph Cinque. The members of the Board are experienced in both travel and the stated industries. The Academy also includes a large board of honorary trustees that serve as regional directors, general managers, restaurateurs, chefs, and other functions.

The International Star Diamond Award

The most known aspect of the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences is the International Star Diamond Award. The award is the most prestigious award of true excellence in hospitality, gastronomy, attitude, quality, cleanliness, and above all service. The Academy receives a large number of possible recipients for the award from respectable sources around the world. The selection is then refined by the Board of Trustees. The final evaluation is a visit by an anonymous inspector to review the destination and its services.

– For hotels and resorts, a set of gold-plated plaques including the logo and engraved signatures of the three board members;

– For restaurants, a set of plaques, both gold and silver-plated, with the logo and signatures;

– For chefs, a plaque with recognition engravings and a medal;

– A framed letter from the Academy recognizing the destination’s winning of the award;

– Lapel pins and cuff links in a jewelry box.

An additional format of a plate has been used for chefs.

Franz Schubert’s March Militaire played by Violinist Suliman Tekalli was beautiful. Mr. Tekalli’s career spans a wide range of activities from concerto soloist to chamber musician. He was top prize winner at the Seoul International Music Competition in Korea as well as first prize winner in the Blount National String Competitions. He began his studies in violin at the age of three in his native state of Florida and went on to attend the Julliard School, Cleveland Institute of Music, Yale School of Music and Schwob School of Music. Mr. Tekalli actively transcribes and arranges the violin, piano and mixed ensembles as well as composing original works for the standard violin concerto repertoire. He has arranged ensembles with the Sejong Soloists and is heading a recording project in the Spring 2016 for an orchestration of Ravel’s 2nd Violin Sonata for violin and orchestra, as well as an operatic fantasy on Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel.”

Suliman Tekalli and Violist Jung Yeon Kim held a Duo for Violin and Viola by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Ms. Kim began playing the violin when she was eight and was accepted to the Julliard School Pre-College Division at the age of fourteen. She received her bachelor’s degree in violinist and later switched to viola at Julliard where she received her master’s degree. As a chamber musician Ms. Kim performed at the Aspen Music Festival, Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall and the French Alliance in New York City. She received the Honors Ensemble Award at the New England Conservator as a member of the Hudson String Quartet and has also collaborated with artists in other fields, including performing with the well-known dancers of the Korean traditional ensemble and has collaborated with Alice Walker, author of “The Color Purple”.

K. Pendeecki’s Divertimento for Solo Cello (1994) and J.S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major were magnificently performed by James Jeonghwan Kim. Born in Korea, James Kim appeared as soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall, the Julliard Orchestra at Carnegie Stern Auditorium, the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra of New England and the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra. He has recently won Third Prize and the Park Seong Yeowng Special Prize of the 2015 International Isang Yun Cello competition held in Korea. Mr. Kim’s solo recital debut at Weill Hall sponsored by the Yale School of Music in 2013 received rave reviews for Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata, D 821.

So-Chun Shinn Lee, Chair of the Sejong Soloists U.S. Board of Directors, ended the concert with a discussion with the artists, followed by questions and answers from the audience. Ms. Lee is a young associate of the Metropolitan Opera’s Board of Directors and Chairman of the Metropolitan Opera’s Young Associates Program.
