Woman’s Day Magazine’s Seventh Annual Red Dress Awards commemorated American Heart Month at The Red Dress Awards.

The Red Dress Awards washeld at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at L incoln Center, on February 10, 2010, and was a spectacular evening of entertainment, fashion and inspiration. The View’s Sherri Shepherd emceed the Awards, whichfeatured performances by Mary J. Blige, Colbie Caillat, and Anthony Hamilton, as well as appearances by Larry King Jr.,Jennie Garth, Tim Gunn, Dancing with the Stars’ Anna Trebunskaya and Jonathan Roberts, among others.

Woman’s Day honored four women who have made significant contributions to the fight against heart disease, the number one killer of women today. One of the Award’s sponsors, Campbell Soup Company, teamed up with Project Runway’s Tim Gunn to help make heart health fashionable. Gunn encouraged people to design a Campbell red dress inspired by their heart-health hero to raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement. Starting in January, people began voting for their favorite finalist’s story and inspired red dress designto trigger a $1 donation from Campbell to the cause (up to $625,000). Gunn and the winner debut the original red dress design at this year’s awards ceremony.

The Red Dress Awards not only honored those making a difference in the fight against heart disease, but also gave others the chance to make a difference. For the second year in a row, all proceeds from the event were donated to The Larry King Cardiac Foundation. Established in 1988 by Larry King, the Foundation provides funding for life saving cardiac procedures for individuals who, due to limited means and no insurance, would be otherwise unable to receive lifesaving treatment.

“As heart disease continues to be the number one killer of women,” said Elizabeth Mayhew, vice president and editor-in-chief of Woman’s Day, “Woman’s Day remains committed to making women aware of their risk and educating them on how to be heart-healthy. This year’s Red Dress Awards’ honorees continue our annual tradition in recognizing women who have made a difference in battling the disease. All four women are true inspirations, exemplifying the spirit of the magazine and its readers.”

The 2010 Woman’s Day Red Dress Award honored four women who have made outstanding strides in the fight against heart disease. In addition, Woman’s Day was honored to present the Legendary Heart Award to their own, Jane Chesnutt who founded the Red Dress Awards in 2003, and the Red Heart Award to Jennie Garth for her longtime commitment to raising awareness of heart disease in women. This year’s Red Dress Award honorees were:

Suzanne Haynes, MD – For the past five years, Dr. Haynes has led the Office on Women’s Health Cardiovascular Team, which funds the Heart Truth Champions program as well as Heart Truth events across the nation. She initiated the Heart Truth Professional Education Program, which educates physicians about how to spot heart disease symptoms in women.

Kathy Kastan – Kastan is the past president of the board of directors of WomenHeart, a national organization aimed at preventing heart disease in women and reducing death and disability among women living with heart disease. Also a national spokeswoman for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s Heart Truth Campaign, she has a unique perspective: She herself survived bypass surgery at age 42.

Julia Kauffman – The Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation, which Ms. Kauffman heads, established the Muriel I. Kauffman Women’s Heart Center in Kansas City, the first of its kind in the U.S. to focus on heart disease in women. The foundation’s continual support of the Center has enabled it to help spread awareness of how heart disease affects women and fund groundbreaking research while providing top-notch cardiac care. To this end, Kauffman recently created the Julia Irene Kauffman Endowed Chair for Women’s Cardiovascular Health.

Karol Watson, MD – The many prestigious positions Dr. Watson holds keep her in the thick of heart disease awareness and prevention. She’s an assistant professor of medicine in UCLA’s Division of Cardiology, on the executive committee for the UCLA Fellowship Program in Cardiovascular Diseases, codirector of UCLA’s Program in Preventive Cardiology, director of its Center for Cholesterol and Hypertension Management, and a practicing cardiologist.

Taking inspiration from Woman’s Day’s graphics for the event’s invitation, event sponsor Steuben Glass created a multi-dimensional design for the Red Dress Award. Using a prismatic form that reflects and refracts light, Steuben etched soft folds of fabric drapery onto the back of the prism. The designs etched onto the right side reflect to the left, and those on the left reflect to the right causing a fully dimensionalized image to appear as though it is floating through the middle of the glass.

The 2010 Red Dress Award honorees will be featured in the March issue of Woman’s Day, on news stands February 9.This year’s event was sponsored by Campbell Soup Company, Halle by Halle Berry Pure Orchid, Metamucil (a Procter & Gamble brand), St. Jude Medical, Judith Leiber and Steuben Glass.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) — Slashing red tape or ignoring ordinarily required paperwork, officials in the United States and the Netherlands have cleared the way for scores of Haitian orphans to leave their earthquake-ravaged homeland, according to officials from the two countries.

All of the children had adoptions pending with prospective parents in the two countries before Tuesday’s 7.0-magnitude quake, and government officials said paperwork was expedited or put on hold to make transfers happen on an emergency basis.

300 children have pending adoption cases with American families. Six children arrived in Florida Sunday night, met by their adoptive parents with hugs and tears of happiness.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has chartered a plane to pick up about 100 children Monday, spokesman Aad Meijer told CNN.

Earthquakes

Dutch Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin over the weekend granted the children entry into the country, although their paperwork, including travel and adoption documents, was incomplete, Justice Ministry spokesman Patrick Mikkelsen told CNN.

About 44 of the orphans’ adoptions had yet to be approved by a Haitian judge, even though they were matched to Dutch parents, Mikkelsen said. Dutch officials may seek the remaining approvals from Haiti once the children have already settled in the Netherlands, he added.

Haiti is home to about 380,000 orphans, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund, and that number is expected to grow in the wake of Tuesday’s earthquake. And those who lived in orphanages before Tuesday may be homeless now, as reports of destroyed orphanages have come throughout the quake zone.
