PRIDE MONTH SPECIAL Drag Queens and Beauty Queens: Contesting Femininity in the World’s Playground.

by Laurie Greene

The Miss America pageant has been held in Atlantic City for the past hundred years, helping to promote the city as a tourist destination. But just a few streets away, the city hosts a smaller event that, in its own way, is equally vital to the local community: the Miss’d America drag pageant.

Drag Queens and Beauty Queens presents a vivid ethnography of the Miss’d America pageant and the gay neighborhood from which it emerged in the early 1990s as a moment of campy celebration in the midst of the AIDS crisis. It examines how the pageant strengthened community bonds and activism, and how it has changed now that Rupaul’s Drag Race has brought many of its practices into the cultural mainstream. Comparing the Miss’d America pageant with its glitzy cisgender big sister, anthropologist Laurie Greene discovers how the two pageants have influenced each other in unexpected ways.

Drag Queens and Beauty Queens deepens our understanding of how femininity is performed at pageants, exploring the various ways that both the Miss’d America and Miss America pageants have negotiated between embracing and critiquing traditional gender roles. Ultimately, it celebrates the rich tradition of drag performance and the community it engenders.
On your program, Laurie can answer questions like:

What are “camp sensibilities” in drag performance and gay culture?

The book explored the personalities of the pageants. Can you give us a flavor of them?

What is the importance of camp in missed America? Drag style, performance, and language.

Tell us about the queering of the miss America pageant? Did anybody work on both?

How do each of the four areas of competition differ on the page TA — swimsuit, evening gown, talent, and interview. There is an object and a subject section.

Who owns the pageants?

What is the Show Us Your Shoes Parade?

Do you see the talent on both sides sharing hard work, perseverance, and talent?

What are the different elements of pageantry and the meaning of individual expression when comparing beauty pageants and drag pageants? Does one try and fit in and one tries to be unique? One fits into boundaries and one tries to break boundaries.

You mentioned that drag is part of the gay community in AC but it has a male focus. Explain?

Talk about the conflicts you found between the gay community and the drag community.

“An unprecedented look at drag culture and its history in Atlantic City. A must-read for queens and their fans!”

— Sapphira Cristal ― Miss’d American 2020

“I have long wondered how the Miss America pageant maintains a conservative appeal while ignoring the known influence and involvement by the gay community. If you’ve ever known or loved Miss America, you need this history lesson.”

— Erin O’Flaherty ― Miss Missouri 2016, first openly lesbian Miss America contestant

“After 30 years in the drag business, I was surprised and elated to learn so much about drag/LGBTQ+ history in Atlantic City. The in-depth exploration of how Miss America and Miss’d America were connected and disconnected is fascinating.”

— Sherry Vine ― Drag Legend

“Through a highly entertaining, insightful, and informative combination of history, ethnography, and gender studies, Greene uncovers the long-standing influence that Atlantic City’s LGBTQ+ community has had on the Miss America Pageant.”

— Rusty Barrett ― author of From Drag Queens to Leathermen: Language, Gender, and Gay Male Subcultures

“The subject matter is fascinating.”

Living with ulcerative colitis (UC) can make working, maintaining relationships and juggling family responsibilities difficult. A global survey of 1,254 gastroenterologists and 2,100 adults with a self-reported history of UC revealed both men and women experienced the impact of UC on day-to day life, including emotional wellbeing.1

Now, with the added challenges of navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on emotional wellbeing is more important than ever.

Laurie Keefer, PhD, who is a psychologist with Mount Sinai Hospital’s IBD Center in New York City who specializes in the psychosocial care of patients with chronic digestive diseases, most notably Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis (UC). Allyson, who has a history of UC, to discuss the emotional impact of UC and share tips for those living with UC on how to have more effective conversations with their healthcare team. Both Dr. Keefer and Allyson have been compensated by Pfizer to appear in this interview today.

Before we start, it is important to note that results from the UC Narrative are not representative of all UC patients, and only reflect responses of those who took the survey. For more information about the survey limitations and methodology, visit talkinguc.com.

BIO: Dr Laurie Keefer is an academic health psychologist and the Director for Psychobehavioral Research within the Division of Gastroenterology. She specializes in the psychosocial care of patients with chronic digestive diseases, specifically inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis. Dr. Keefer came to Mount Sinai in January 2016 from Chicago, IL to lead a subspecialty medical home for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).

The Mount Sinai IBD medical home, known as GRITT-IBD(TM) focuses on gaining resilience through transitions as they occur across the lifespan of patients living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Dr Keefer’s clinical and research interests are in the area of IBD disease self-management, gut-directed hypnotherapy, resilience, the psychosocial care needs of emerging adults with chronic disease and cognitive-behavior therapy. She is a sought after speaker and mentor. She chairs the Division of Psychogastroenterology within the Rome Foundation and is on the Council of the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society.

BIO

My name is Allyson and I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) in 2007 at the age of 29. In hindsight I am certain I had symptoms that went undiagnosed for years, if not back to childhood. My diagnosis and progression of my UC was quite rapid and debilitating, resulting in being bed ridden and hospitalized within less than a month. After 3 years of hospitalizations and a very poor quality of life, I made an emergent decision to have a 3-stage total colectomy. This process had profound impacts of my physical and emotional wellbeing, as well as self-image due to body changes, and I feel strongly about advocating for patients with UC. I feel I often went without a voice until I was able to learn to speak up for myself as I learned more about my UC. As there is no cure, I continue to manage my daily life in often challenging, or what would appear impossible situations to those without UC. I am resilient and strong in a way that I only learned through my UC journey. I live a fulfilling life that may require adjustments, and I am grateful for the opportunities to advocate.

American Friends of Rabin Medical Center Reflects on 20 Years of Success and
Commemorates the 20th Anniversary of the Death of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin at
Upcoming Gala with Special Tribute from Master of Ceremonies Charlie Rose and Exclusive
Guest Interview with Henry Kissinger.
New York, NY- This month marks the 20th anniversary of the assassination of Israel’s Prime
Minister, Yitzhak Rabin. In difficult times Israel forges ahead, in this case invoking the strength
and memory of this great leader to establish the Rabin Medical Center, as a world class medical
facility truly dedicated to being a bridge to peace.

Established shortly after, as an effort to provide support from the U.S. to the Israeli hospital,
American Friends of Rabin Medical Center, is proud to celebrate 20 years of growth and
success on November 23rd as we host our 16th Annual Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street.
Charlie Rose returns as Master of Ceremonies for the 6
th year and will be joined by the
Honorable, Henry Kissinger in an exclusive on stage interview. Today’s headlines are an
appropriate reminder of the importance of Rabin’s efforts to bring peace to Israel. As we honor
the memory of Yitzhak Rabin, Kissinger, whom Rabin considered both a friend and role model,
will share his personal experience of their working together on this joint goal towards peace.
Prime Minister Rabin was respected by many, including honorary event chairs, Consul General
Ido Aharoni, Senator Richard Blumenthal, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Tovah
Feldshuh, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Charles Schumer, Professor Elie Wiesel, and
Mortimer Zuckerman. And he was truly admired by President William J. Clinton. With the
support of these and many others, what started as small gatherings and parlor meetings in DC,
AFRMC has emerged as an influencer of U.S. contributions to Israel, ensuring that Rabin
Medical Center remains at the top of the Medical Industry in the Middle East and worldwide.
In 20 years American Friends of Rabin Medical Center’s successes include:
 The expansion of the Davidoff Cancer Center, which is in plans to double its size by
2017
 The Annual Cheryl Diamond NYC 5K Schlep Run/Walk and Annual Quaker Ridge Golf
Outing that focuses to raise Breast, Ovarian and Prostate Cancer awareness and funds
for Rabin Medical Center, a leader in BRCA testing for both Men and Women.
 The 70 doctors that AFRMC has brought to study medicine throughout the U.S. as part
of the Rabin Medical exchange program.
 The medical advances in Israel, as Rabin Medical Center doctors participate in
developing new technologies
 Top Level Jusidman ER and Trauma Center that hosts one of only six level 1 Burn Units
in Israel thanks to the efforts from AFRMC.
This year we are pleased to honor New York Commercial Real Estate powerhouse, Jonathan
Mechanic of Fried, Frank. Mechanic is to be lauded by AFRMC Chairman, Peter Riguardi and
President Ron Cohen of JLL and gala co- chairs and titans of industry Stanley Chera, Crown
Acquisitions, Richard Chera, Crown Acquisitions, Richard Egosi, Teva Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Marc
Holliday, SL Green Realty Corp., Scott Rechler, RXR Realty, Stephen Siegel, CB Richard Ellis,
Robert Sorin, Fried, Frank and Rob Speyer, Tishman Speyer.
